lf you suspect a leak: ■ Leave the area immediately. ■ From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 1-877-860-6020, day or night, whether you’re a customer or not. A Southwest Gas representative will be there as soon as possible.

■ Don’t smoke or use matches or lighters. ■ Don’t turn on or off electrical switches, thermostats, or appliance controls; or do anything that could cause a spark.

■ Don’t start or stop an engine, or use automated doors.

Natural gas lines can be buried anywhere, even in areas that don’t use natural gas, like all-electric or propane neighborhoods. So it’s important that EVERYONE knows how to recognize and respond to a natural gas leak, wherever they are.

For more information about natural gas safety, visit swgas.com/safety or call 1-877-860-6020.

Wherever you live...Natural gas is your neighbor.

A leak may be present if you:

SMELL: An odor similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or momentary.HEAR: A hissing or roaring coming from the ground or above-ground piping. SEE: Dirt or water blowing into the air, unexplained dead or dying grass or vegetation, or standing water continuously bubbling.

Food, beer, and wine will be available for purchase. No outside food or drinks are allowed in the food court area.

The arts and crafts fair will include items from local vendors, like handmade goods, culinary creations, art, jewelry, photography, candles, furniture, and more. The kids’ zone will feature hayrides and inflatables. Daisy Mountain Railroad will be offering train rides, too. At the pumpkin patch, families can pick out a pumpkin and decorate and paint it. The Autumnfest photo booth is a new attraction this year. Families can have free photos taken at the photo booth, and the photos will be available for download later.

Join in the tasting of the apple pie contest and help pick the People’s Choice award winner. The contest is set for Saturday, Oct. 24, at 10:30 a.m. Ribbons and prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in the single and double crust divisions. To enter the contest, see OnlineAtAnthem.com/Autumnfest.

The Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Office Mounted Patrol division will be on-site on Saturday, Oct. 24. Stop by for a meet-and-greet. Also on Saturday, Smokey the Bear will be at Autumnfest to help kids learn how to keep their community safe from fires. Attendees can also take a tour through a fire truck and on-site medical trailer.

Local musician on the riseKENDAL O’CONNOR

STAFF CAVE CREEK – Stephanie Chacon,

a local musician that has lived in Cave Creek for over 20 years, is making a name for herself playing shows every week in coffee shops and bars all over the valley.

At 29, Chacon has been playing for over 15 years and has been influenced by many other artists, but has developed a distinct singer-songwriter style almost reminiscent of British sensation Adele. Producer George James described Chacon as “an artist of considerable depth.”

Chacon grew up in a household of musicians, listening to everything from bluegrass to bossa nova jazz; suffice it to say that music is just in her blood.

She picked up her first guitar at 13 years old and, “it stuck.”

Chacon sings, plays guitar, and writes her own songs, drawing inspiration from other artists such as Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, and John Mayer, but manages to preserve a genuine sound that’s all her own.

“[Songwriting] can come from anything honestly, I don’t feel like it could be put into a box,” Chacon said. “There isn’t a specific method, I think that songs come to you in different ways. No song is really written the same way; it’s just based on the moment.”

Chacon said that she has been “blessed to meet a lot of different artists,” and that one of the best things about being a musician is connecting with other people.

“I feel like the main person that’s really pushing me right now is George James,” Chacon said. “He’s really the person that took me to the next step.”

Chacon and James met two years ago in a local coffee shop. Since then, James has acted as her producer, vocal coach, and friend, aiding in her growth as an artist.

James said it was “the depth and universality of the music” that initially caught his attention, as well as her “exceptional musicianship.”

“She has grown tremendously as an artist, she’s just blossomed,” James said.

Together they are recording her first EP, scheduled to release early this spring. Chacon said that James helps her look at her music from a different perspective, and “has an ear for something” she doesn’t have.

Another musician she often collaborates with is her younger brother, Alex Chacon.

Although they grew up in the same household, Alex comes from a different style of music: he plays electric guitar and

is influenced by metal and progressive

rock. But you would never know the

difference listening to them play in perfect

harmony, Stephanie crooning into the

microphone and Alex skillfully plucking

away at an acoustic guitar.

“We get together and it’s fun, we do

songs that I wouldn’t do on my own,”

Stephanie Chacon said.

The duo plays weekly at a number of

local hang outs in Cave Creek, including

the Hideaway, Janey’s, and Local

Jonny’s, but is branching out to more

venues across the valley, recently booking

at show at the prestigious Wright Bar in

the Arizona Biltmore resort.

“Every [venue] is different, but we have

a big family here in Cave Creek. When

we play here all the locals come out,”

Chacon said.

“Her voice is like candy,” Cassie

O’Grady, a Cave Creek resident, said. “I

love watching new people experience her

for the first time.”

Although she feels at home performing

locally, Chacon said she’s just going to

keep playing in new places in order to

grow and evolve as a musician.

“[Music] is everything; it’s the universal

language,” she said. “You spend a lifetime

building these connections.”

Even though one day Chacon hopes

to venture out of the little town of Cave

Creek, it will always be her home. Until

then, she’s taking a leap of faith and

following her passion for music.

“I don’t know where it’s going to take

me, but living my life to the fullest and

living my passion is the most important

thing,” she said.

BLM unveils new mountain bike maps

NORTH VALLEY – Interactive maps for 20 of the nation’s most popular mountain biking trails on public lands are now available through a mobile-friendly online tool.

The maps are being provided through a partnership among the Bureau of Land Management, the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA), and the MTB Project. The maps can be accessed at www.blm.gov/mountainbike.

The new suite of online maps will improve a visitor’s experience by providing helpful information and eye-catching visual images of mountain biking recreation sites and trails. By making this information accessible to the public, the BLM aims to encourage more Americans to get outside and explore their public lands. Through the BLM Web site, riders can also access more detailed trail data from IMBA and the MTB Project.

More than one million visitors used mountain bike trails located on BLM public lands last year. Now, for the first time, the mountain biking community will be able to pull information about specific BLM mountain biking areas through a centralized online tool while they’re on the go.

The BLM is working hand-in-hand with local partners and volunteers in hundreds of communities around the country to build and maintain trails and to develop other recreational opportunities through its Connecting with Communities strategy. Additional online tools are in development; these tools will help ensure that the public has informed and open access to the recreational opportunities

on public lands. The new mountain bike maps

can be found at www.blm.gov/mountainbike.

NORTH VALLEY – Thunderbird Artists is searching for more talented artists to add to the upcoming season’s lineup.

Now in its 34th year of producing sophisticated, world-class fine art and wine festivals throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area, Thunderbird Artists is issuing a Call for Artists for its upcoming season. The ongoing juried open enrollment enables painters, sculptors, gourd artists, jewelers, and artists working in mixed media to apply for a booth in one or more of Thunderbird Artists award-winning festivals.

community newsdisabilities. These funds will help up to four veterans on limited household incomes to live independently in a safe and suitably adapted home that is affordable.

The Maricopa County Human Services Department will manage the program and will blend these new and much-needed resources with its Maricopa County Home Improvement Program. The modifications include, but are not limited to, accessibility fixture retrofits in bathrooms and kitchens, doorway widening, ramp connection, and ramp modifications that will increase structure mobility, stability, and safety of homes. All improvements are made by licensed contractors.

MCHSD will provide a maximum grant amount up to $50,000 per home for veterans with service-connected disabilities. To qualify for the grants, applicants must own their home in Maricopa County, be active, honorably discharged, or retired members of the armed services, have a service-connected disability, and not be able to afford the modifications needed to their home.

MCHSD utilizes an innovative online inquiry system, www.hsd.maricopa.gov/MCHIP.aspx, which allows interested clients to complete and submit a form to inquire about home improvement services available to them.

D-backs, APS help fund Kayla Mueller memorial playground

PRESCOTT – The Arizona Diamondbacks and APS jointly announced they have made significant contributions to complete funding for the “Kayla’s Hands” playground in Prescott, which will be built in memory of Kayla Mueller, the human rights activist who passed away earlier this year while being held captive by the Islamic State in Syria.

The Kiwanis Club of Prescott had raised more than half of the funds needed for the playground project and was seeking to raise additional funding when the D-backs and APS stepped up to contribute the remaining funds. The playground, which will be owned and maintained by the City of Prescott, is located adjacent to Brad Ziegler Field, one of 35 fields built across the state as a partnership between the D-backs and APS.

Mueller, 26, attended Tri-City College Prep High School and then Northern Arizona University, where she studied political science and focused on international issues in and out of the classroom. After graduation, she traveled around the world, volunteering with several humanitarian groups and teaching young children abroad. Praised for her humility and selflessness, she was held captive for 18 months in Syria

before perishing on Feb. 6, 2015.

In Kayla’s memory, her parents

started a non-profit organization

called Kayla’s Hands (www.

further Kayla’s humanitarian

efforts both locally and

internationally.

Local dentist holding candy buyback

ANTHEM – This Halloween,

give kids the chance to share

their candy with a great cause!

On Nov. 2, Sheppard Pediatric

Dentistry will hold a candy

buyback event at their office.

Through the annual candy

buyback, kids get $1/lb. for

their candy. Then Sheppard

Pediatric Dentistry ships it off

to the troops in care packages

through Operation Gratitude.

Participants create cards to

send along, offering a feel-good,

community-caring opportunity

for the kids. The candy buyback

also helps save the kids’ teeth

from all that sugar.

Last year, Sheppard Pediatric

Dentistry collected over 700

pounds of candy, and they’re

aiming to break that record

this year. Everyone can

participate; kids do not need to

be patients of the office.

To learn more about the candy buyback, call Sheppard Pediatric Dentistry at (623) 551-2992.

one-tenth of the water capacity of an average swimming pool by capturing, sanitizing, and recirculating the water used at the park. The underground reservoirs that capture and recirculate the water reduce evaporation, and the motion-activated sensors minimize electricity usage combined with an automatic shut-off feature, the Carefree Mayor explained in a phone interview.

“There is less evaporation than a swimming pool,” said Mayor Les Peterson. “It uses very little water.”

The community had been

requesting a park with activities more suitable for the intense summer heat endured by full-time residents, plus the town

council had already considered building a unique water feature as part of a larger revitalization

plan for downtown Carefree, he said.

“We thought for some time now it made sense for us to have one as well,” said Mayor Peterson.

According to a slide show presented at a town council meeting this June, the goal of the new water park is to create a unique and memorable experience that encourage visitors of all ages to come to the Desert Gardens outside of special events in the downtown area, encouraging more local spending.

Have you ever driven your car with only one hand on the steering wheel? Yes, I thought so. But what about driving one-handed while the other hand is holding a desert tortoise? No, probably not. It seems driving one-handed is a pretty common practice (one report claims more men than women drive with one hand on the steering wheel) but holding a turtle whose legs are moving fast and furiously with his head bobbing… not so common.

I was driving along my country lane when I noticed a big rock in the middle of the road. I swerved slightly to avoid it, but then saw in my rear view mirror that the rock was moving! I stopped the car and got out to see a tortoise the size of a small salad plate, walking slowly up the road as if he had a purpose. It was dusk and I worried for his safety. Surely someone would come along and hit him!

Fearing for his demise, I decided I better move our friend to one side of the road, or the other. But then neither place looked “turtle friendly.” Dirt and no vegetation with no other hardbacks in sight, it seemed wrong to place him in the ditches or leave him in harm’s way. So I did the only sensible thing. I grabbed the tortoise with my right hand and held him while I drove with my left up the lane to my house.

When I arrived home, Doug was there to greet me and looked

at my little friend I had rescued. He said, “You shouldn’t interfere with wildlife – they know where they are going.” Well, I pointed out I see lots of wildlife smashed in the middle of roadways, so they do not always know where they are going! Then he looked at me and asked, “So what are you planning to do with this turtle?”

Did you know a tortoise can live for 100 years? The little guy I had in my hand was not full grown but could have been middle aged. And then I had to wonder if he had a plan. You know, gazing out from his turtle home or burrow and longing to cross the road and move out on his own. Finally mustering enough courage to “make his move,” he starts the journey to his new life. Maybe it took him

years to get the courage to do this. Only to be foiled by a well-meaning human!

Do I take the tortoise back to where I think he should be or where he wanted to go? I asked Doug for an opinion but all he could do was laugh at my predicament. He pointed out that putting him down in our yard so he can walk out to the barn and get stomped on by our horses didn’t seem like a good idea.

Losing light, I kept a hold of the turtle who glared at me indignantly with his legs moving and head still bobbing. I got back in the car and drove down to the spot where I found him

and pulled over and parked.

Since putting him back in the

center of the road where I saw

him walking seemed cruel, I

had to decide whether he might

like the east or west side of the

road. A neighbor came by and

we chatted about which side of

the street looked best.

Crossroads. Never have liked

them much. Do we go where

we belong or where we think

we ought to be? With about five

minutes of dusk left, I had to

figure it out! My neighbor got on

Google on her cell phone and

read that turtles like to burrow,

so she thought the east side of

the road was best. More dirt

there. Then another neighbor

on an ATV came along and

said he thought the west side

had more vegetation and looked

more turtle-friendly. Now Doug

walked up and said we should

take him down by the State Trust

Land because there are trees,

vegetation, and dirt mounds

there. A tortoise heaven!

In other words, we had no idea

what we were doing. Which is,

of course, what happens when

well-meaning people try to

help. So I placed my little guy

very close to where I found him

(but not in the middle of the

road) along the side of a ditch

and he paused, then quickly

scurried off into a thicket. Free

of the terrifying interference of

a bunch of humans.

Dear Readers, if you see

a dinner plate moving in

the road, slow down. No,

you are not hallucinating.

You are just experiencing

another Arizona wonder.

Banner flags, horse statue locations under discussion at Council meeting

TARA ALATORRESTAFF

CAVE CREEK – The Oct. 5 Cave Creek Town Council meeting was procedural, with second readings of general housekeeping items and discussion about updating the banner advertisement program and the relocation of a horse statue.

The second reading of a land exchange between Horny Toad Restaurant and the Desert Awareness Park to implement a non-motorized trail easement passed unanimously 6-0, with Mark Lipsky absent for the meeting.

“Thanks to our planning department and Bambi [Mueller] for this; it’s a win-win,” said Councilman Thomas McGuire about the land exchange.

The town council then passed the second readings of two general housekeeping items with little discussion. Increased expenditure limitations for the town administration passed in a 5 to 1 vote, with Clancy voting no. The Council unanimously

voted in favor of fixing oversights in who was the head authority of personnel at the town water company, putting the town manager, Peter Jankowski, as the top authority in the chain of command.

Then Vice Mayor Steve LaMar addressed the council about the banner program, which provides several locations for local businesses to display banner flags in downtown Cave Creek for a fee that is collected by the town and Cave Creek Merchants and Events Association.

A total of nine poles are in the program, and it costs approximately $4,500 to rent a pole to display a banner, with 80 percent of the profit going to CCMEA and 20 percent of the profit going to the town.

“I am here making this statement, inviting discussion,” said Vice Mayor LaMar. “Personally I think it is a distraction and fundamentally I am concerned about the whole program,” he said.

According to town manager Peter Jankowski, the CCMEA owes the town $6,600 from the banner program, but it was stated at the meeting that he believes the town will be reimbursed soon.

Jankowski agreed to meet with some town council members and CCMEA representatives to rewrite the agreement and bring an updated version to the town council in the near future. No motion or vote was taken.

The Cave Creek Town Council then discussed moving the horse statue on the southern sector of Cave Creek Road without a motion or vote being taken, but giving Jankowski direction to involve the sculptor of the statue, Mark Carroll, in finding a potential new location.

Vice Mayor LaMar stated at the meeting that the statue was currently not in a good location, and the town could honor the artist with a bigger plaque and put it near the entrance of town, the preferred location of the artist.

New entry/exit gates being installed at Anthem Community Park

ANTHEM – Entry and exit gates at all Anthem Community Park entrances are set to be installed by the end of November.

All three Community Park vehicle lots will have gates installed. The initial concrete groundwork has been completed. The gates will be used when the park is closed, as part of the park’s security system. The gates, which will be manual, are meant to deter after-hours vehicle traffic and parking.

In a release from the Anthem Community Council, the gates are described as “part of the Council’s long-term security plan for ACC facilities and amenities.”

The gate installation is an ACC operating fund expense that was planned, budgeted,

and approved for the 2015 budget. The long-term security plan was on ACC meeting agendas in 2014, and potential and current security measures were outlined and discussed, including park patrol, security cameras, contracted off-duty law enforcement, MCSO Posse assistance, Community Park vehicle access gates, building alarm systems, and emergency

plans. The security plan is

noted as evaluation to “develop

a comprehensive and cost

effective approach to safeguard

ACC facilities and the people

who use them.”

Animal Hospital at Anthem offering new ‘Free Vaccines For Life’ programBusiness News

To ring in the month of October, also known as “National Pet Wellness month”, Animal Hospital at Anthem would love to reward our clients and any new clients who are already taking great care of their pets with our new adult program.

The most important reason why we decided to add this program to our hospital is

because we want to focus on what is truly important to us and to our clients, and that is preventive medicine. Yearly wellness exams and vaccines are a very important part of that. We know it can be a challenge to find time to get your pet in for an annual check-up and we would like to make that challenge easier.

It is extremely important for EVERY pet to have a physical examination by their veterinarian once a year. Without it, we see diseases that have progressed to the point where it becomes costly to treat, and in some cases, treatment is no longer an option. Owners are often caught off guard by any illness occurring, because the initial signs can be so small. If we can detect early signs of a disease we can provide your pet with a better (and longer) quality of life.

During a routine exam, doctors auscult the heart (listening for murmurs or arrhythmias) and palpate the abdomen (feeling for unusual lumps and bumps any changes in the size of abdominal organs). A complete exam also includes an oral exam,

looking for signs of infection in the gums or fractured teeth, as well as examining your pet’s eyes and ears. It is important for the owner to realize that any abnormal conditions can be treated and early detection is key. During the exam, a veterinarian will determine if any of the pet’s vaccinations need to be updated and can perform routine heartworm testing and fecal testing.

Here are some details:• This adult wellness program

works by enrolling each pet and then bringing them in yearly for a wellness exam. Any core vaccines the doctors determine your pet should have are free

• of charge.• In order to continue your

enrollment in Free Vaccines For Life, your pet must be seen for an annual wellness exam.

• Enrolled pets receive free vaccines for the pet’s lifetime as long as they receive their yearly wellness examination each year.

• Each enrollment fee is paid at the start of the program and covers one

pet. If you have 4 pets, that’s 4 enrollment fees and QUADRUPLE the savings!

• At the time of the yearly exam you only have to pay for the exam, the vaccines are free!

• All Core vaccines recommended by American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association and American Association of Feline Practitioners for dogs and cats are included.

Any non-core or special-order vaccines are not included. Please call the office for the current enrollment fee. The enrollment fee will cover the core vaccine costs for the life of your pet. You will be responsible for a yearly wellness exam fee when vaccines are given.

SHEA STANFIELDARTS COLUMNIST

French writer Edmund de Goncourt once wrote, “A poet is a man that puts up a ladder to a star and climbs it while playing a violin.” The artistic journey of local jewelry artist, Stan Cothern follows much the same creative spirit. Born on a farm in west-central Missouri and growing up in Kansas City instilled in Stan solid mid-west values, and a talent for creative problem solving.

Following the path of many over the years, Stan worked as a welder for a couple of years before deciding that if he was ever going to get ahead he needed a college education. So he entered Central Missouri University, and after several moves and working full time all the way, Stan graduated from Saginaw Valley State University in 1976. This

success enabled him to work as a Manager of Manufacturing for a plant producing pressure vessels and industrial mixing and baking machines. He then moved to the position of Vice President in a similar company. All of this would come into creative play later in Stan’s life.

Stan’s first introduction to Arizona was in the late 60s visiting his uncle, Loyd Cothern, a silversmith, who was “snow birding” in the area of Black Canyon City.” The area became a favorite of Stan’s family inspiring Stan’s dad to buy a lot next to his brother. Finally, after falling in love with this slice of Arizona, in 1972 Stan bought his dad’s lot with a promise he would move to Arizona, upon retirement. That promise was realized eleven years ago; Stan and his wife Beth never looked back. At this point, Stan made the

decision to focus on his creative side. He had long admired his Uncle’s silver work, so taking advantage of a ride with Beth to her management position in Prescott, Stan enrolled in Yavapai College to learn jewelry design and fabrication. He credits his mentors, Bill Ford, Carolyn Ensley, Alex Horst, and R.D. “Bubba” Shackelford for opening a vast array of possibilities in design and unique use of materials. While

taking a silver casting class, Stan decided to bring in clippings from a citrus tree his father had planted 50 years before on his land. The jewelry fabricated from these clippings were an instant hit with Stan’s family.

Stan figured if this worked, he would try casting vines, cactus skeletons and other organic objects. The nature cast jewelry became Stan’s signature “look” of his designs today. His small shop today is full of dried specimens waiting to be immortalized in silver. Stan feels his background in engineering has been a great help in taking a design concept to a finished object. He says, “If I can envision it, then I can make it.” The precision he learned from his early training comes in handy when setting gemstones in a piece, as well. His favorites are faceted stones of Sapphire, Tourmaline Tanzanite, and Demantoid Garnet. Recently, Stan has had quite a bit of success including meteorite fragments and Damascus steel, which make stunning and eye-catching pieces.

Stan is a member artist of Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery on Whiskey Row in Prescott (134 E. Montezuma) where his work is presently on display, a great stopping point for Prescott’s Fourth Friday’s Art Walk. Follow the Cooperative’s gallery displays and events at www.artsprescott.com. Stan is also a participating artist in Rock a Rama held at Black Canyon City’s High Desert Park from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1; admission is free. He enjoys this event,

year after year, because it gives him a chance to reconnect with former clients, and meet new ones as well.

Stan does custom work on commission, on occasion, such as wedding rings or jewelry pieces from objects that have special meaning to the person or family. The options are endless. To view Stan Cothern’s work, keep up with his exhibit schedule, or commission a piece of your own, visit the Arts Prescott Web site at www.

Artsprescott.com, his ETSY store StancothernjewelryII, or his Facebook page. Stan can also be contacted at his email at [email protected] or call (623) 374-5069.

Starlight presents behind-the-scenes look at community theater in comedy ‘Play On!’

ELIZABETH MEDORASTAFF

PHOENIX – “What’s the difference between a play and a parachute? When a parachute opens, you got nothing to worry about.” So says one of the characters in Starlight Community Theater’s ‘Play On!,’ which starts Friday, Oct. 16, at Starlight’s north Phoenix theater, 1611 W. Whispering Wind Dr.

This “show within a show” details the trials and tribulations of a community theater cast trying to put on a production of a play when everything that can go wrong does. Each member of the all-teen Starlight cast is playing two parts: the part of an actor in the ill-fated play ‘Murder Most Foul’ and the part of a cast member in ‘Murder Most Foul.’ Lots of twists, turns, and hilarity await the cast, as they valiantly attempt through it all to “play on.”

Julia Burks, who is playing the parts of Smitty Smith and Doris, called ‘Play On!’ an all-around “fun show.”

“It’s a lot more funny when it goes wrong!” Burks said.

At 14 years old, Burks is an award-winning actress and has already been in 14 shows; ‘Play On!’ will be her second show with Starlight. She and the other cast members are working hard on practicing their parts, including learning the areas in which their on-stage personas make mistakes and stumble over their lines.

Burks said in the first rehearsals, the cast would have to correct themselves after delivering the right line – because the character they’re portraying delivers the line wrong.

“The first few times, it was, ‘Oh, wait, I forgot to mess up!’” she said, laughing.

Chelsea Carll, who’s playing Polly Benish and Lady Margaret, agreed that the “mistake” lines were a challenge to learn.

“That is the hardest thing – to mess up on purpose,” Carll said.

Carll, a 15-year-old award-winning veteran actress, has been in 45 shows, 20 with Starlight. She called ‘Play On!’ “my favorite show I’ve ever been in,” describing ‘Play On!’ as “focusing on the wit.”

“Come for a laugh!” Carll said, encouraging the community to come enjoy the show.

‘Play On!’ director Ric Alpers said the Starlight cast is doing an “outstandingly good job.”

“They’ve been a fun group to work with,” Alpers said.

‘Play On!’ is a straight show, meaning there’s no singing or dancing. That means a lot of dialogue for the ensemble cast to learn. The cast will also have quick costume changes; in the 10-minute intermission between Acts I and II, the cast will have to completely change costumes. Between Acts II and III, the cast will have to get in full makeup, again in just 10 minutes. Their dedication to making the show work is evident in their preparation and practice.

“I love this show – it’s very fun,” said Will Rippenkroeger, who is portraying Billy Carewe and Stephen Sellers.

Rippenkroeger is a Starlight veteran; he’s been a part of every Starlight show in the last few years. While this keeps the 18-year-old award-winning actor extremely busy, his love of acting and music makes it worth the effort.

The well-trained Starlight crew has had to rework their on-stage mindset for the unique setup of ‘Play On.’ Rippenkroeger called ‘Play On!’ a “hard part,” saying that he had to “unlearn all my natural things on-stage.”

That’s part of what makes ‘Play On!’ so much fun – it’s a wholly different look at theater. The behind-the-scenes look at what happens when everything goes wrong but ‘the show must go on’ promises an extremely entertaining show.

Pets of the Week

Willow is a gorgeous four-month-old female kitty that is looking for a forever home. This little girl is a total love bug and super playful. If you want a kitty that will be your companion, sit on your lap and cuddle, and listen to your every word, Willow is your girl. She soaks in attention and arches her back and purrs when she realizes she’s being noticed. She is an active youngster that loves to play with anything on a string.

Willow will do great with kids – she is gentle and sweet. She has been around cats and dogs

at Daisy Mountain Veterinary Hospital, but we always recommend a slow introduction into any household.

Willow is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. If you’d like to give Willow a forever home, please fill out the adoption matchmaker form found at www.anthempets.org, or contact us directly at [email protected]. We can’t wait for you to meet her – you’re going to love this little darling!

Anthem Pets is a nonprofit volunteer organization serving the North Valley since 2005. Operating on donations only, it aims to find forever homes for abandoned animals and return wayward pets to owners. For more information, visit www.anthempets.org.

WillowFrankie is a neutered, male,

7-month-old Dachshund/Chihuahua Mix (Chiweenie) and, BOY, is he cute! This sweet, little boy adores kids and other dogs. He loves to carry around a stuffed monkey as big as he is. We even think he’d be great around cats, but a slow introduction would be required since he’s really not met any yet.

Frankie is both playful and an expert snuggler. He is shy on first meeting, then warms right up and wants to be your very best friend. This young boy is housetrained and learning more basic commands by the day. He’s

also up-to-date on vaccinations and microchipped.

Frankie loves to play with his foster doggie siblings. He also carries his stuffed monkey in his mouth everywhere he goes! He is leash trained and loves going on walks.

If you’d like to meet Frankie, please complete an Anthem Pets Matchmaker Application found at www.anthempets.org/adoptionprocess.

If you’re not in a position to adopt but would still like to help Anthem Pets, please consider becoming a Foster. Fosters make it possible for Anthem Pets to save and care for homeless and abandoned pets just like Frankie!

Frankie
