Football Football was first believed to have been created by the ancient Greeks. The Greeks called it Harpaston.

The game was very rough and brutal. The rules of this ancient sport were quite simple: Points were awarded when a player would cross a goal line by either kicking the ball, running with it across the goal line, or throwing it to another player. The other team would try to stop them or take away their possession of the ball.

American football was first played on November 6, 1869, when teams from Rutgers and Princeton Universities met for the first official football game. Within a decade, concern over the increasing brutality of the game led to its ban by some colleges. Nearly 180 players had suffered serious injuries, and 18 deaths had been reported from the brutal plays that had become common practice.

These are the rules that made American football popular. one side retained undisputed possession of the ball, until that side gives up the ball as a

result of its own violations the line of scrimmage 11 on a team instead of 15 created the quarter-back and center positions forward pass standardized the scoring system, numerical scoring created the safety, interference, penalties, and the neutral zone tackling as low as the knee was permitted - 1888 a touchdown increased in value to six points and field goals went down to three points - 1912


Ice Hockey Ice hockey was first believed to have been played about 4,000 years ago. Although it was

not called hockey, ancient pictures show people hitting a flat ball with a stick. Hockey is played with 6 players on the ice (3 offense men, 2 defense men, and 1 goalie),

unless there is a penalty, in which case the player who received the penalty is put in the penalty bow for a certain amount of time. The team that did not have a penalty has an advantage now, because the game is now 6 on 5 form a while. You score points by getting the puck (a small, flat disk of rubber) passed the goalie (who is standing in front of a small goal) and into the goal.

On March 3, 1875, the first organized game of hockey was played in Montreal by James George Alywin Creighton and several McGill University students. The first ice hockey club, McGill University Hockey Club, was founded in 1877. The game became so popular that the first "world championship" of ice hockey was featured in Montreal's annual Winter Carnival in 1883 and the McGill team captured the "Carnival Cup". Professional hockey has existed since before World War 1. From the first professional ice hockey league based out of Houghton, Michigan in the United States, it quickly grew into Canada and in many other countries. These are the rules of Ice hockey:

Off Side: when an attacking player crosses the defending team's blue line before the puck he is Off Sides. Play is halted and a face-off is held on the nearest spot in the neutral zone.Icing: If a defending player shoots the puck from his own half past the opposing team's goal line and the puck is next touched by an opposing player, icing is called. Play is halted and the puck is returned to the place where the pass originated.Duration The senior game consists of three periods of twenty minutes each. The clock stops with the action.Scoring A goal is legal if all of the puck crosses all of the goal-line.James Callaway and Christian Kennedy

Ice Hockey (continued) The Stanley Cup Award is named after Fredrick Stanley, and is awarded to one team in the NHL every

year. Wayne Gretzky, also known as the Great One, was number 99, and now no one in the NHL is allowed to

wear that number. A team gets a penalty for: Boarding: Checking (shoving) an opponent so that he is thrown violently against the boards. Charging: Taking more than three skating strides prior to checking an opponent. Checking from Behind: Checking or hitting an opponent whose back is facing you, often into the

boards. Cross-Checking: Hitting an opponent with both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the ice. Delayed Penalty: When a referee signals that he is about to penalize a player, but will not stop play until

the team to be penalized touches the puck. Elbowing: Using an elbow in any way to foul an opponent.

High Sticking: Striking your opponent while carrying the stick above shoulder level. Holding: Holding an opponent from moving with hands or stick or any other way.

Hooking: "Hooking" a stick around an opponent to try to block his progress. Icing: Intentionally shooting the puck from behind the center red line over your opponent's goal line. Not

technically a penalty, icing results in a faceoff in the offending team's zone. Interference: Illegal body contact with an opponent who is not in possession of the puck, or knocking an opponent's fallen stick out of his reach. Penalty Shot: When an attacking player has been clearly pulled down preventing a breakaway shot on the goalie. Slashing: Hitting an opposing player with the stick or swinging the stick at an opposing player.

Tripping: Using a stick, knee, foot, arm, hand, or elbow to cause an opponent to trip or fall. There is a few more that I won’t write, and I know there is a lot, so just try to remember a few.James Callaway and Christian Kennedy
