2 REMOVING YOUR OLD DISPOSER,FIRST, TURN OFF ELECTRICAL POWER at the service panel (fuse box or circuit breaker box). If the mountingis the same as your new disposer's mounting, you can use the existing mounting. Follow instructions A through E,Step 2, then go on to Step 10.

Screw

Use a pipe wrench to disconnectthe drain line where it attaches tothe disposer discharge tube.

Wire Nuts

Now, use a screwdriver toremove ground wire. Remove thewire nuts from the power wires.Separate the disposer powerwires from the cable wires.

Loosen the screw(s) on the cableclamp and remove the cable fromthe disposer.

Ifyour old disposer has a differentmounting than your new one, follow steps F and G. Otherwisego on to Step 3.

tF YOUR OLD DISPOSER HAS ADIFFERENT MOUNTING THANYOUR NEW ONE, GO ON TO IN-STRUCTION C.

If your old disposer has the samemounting as your new one, insertthe end of your "wrenchette" orscrewdriver into the right side ofone of the disposer mounting ringlugs at the top of the disposer. Then, turn the "wrenchette" orscrewdriver to the left (counter-clockwise) until the lug lines upwith one of the sink mountingassembly screws.

CAUTION: Be sure to hold thedisposer with one hand while per-forming this step or it may fallwhen the mounting ring is dis-connected from the sink mount-ing assembly. GO TO INSTRUC-TION D.

If your old disposer has a differentmounting than your new one, usea pliers or adjustable wrench toremove the nuts on the mountingring. Then remove old disposer.(Some disposers have to beremoved by taking off a clamp orby twisting the disposer toremove it from its mounting. Easyto figure out.)

i

Loosen screws and remove oldmounting ring and back-up ring. You may need a hammer to loosenassembly parts.

Once the disposer is off, turn itupside down and remove theelectrical plate.

Finally, remove the old sinksleeve by pushing it up throughthe sink hole.

CLEANING YOUR SINK'SDRAIN LINE.NOTE: In case of new construction, you may skip this step.

The cutting elements on your old disposer were probablyworn and not grinding the waste completely. Your drain linemay be partially blocked, We recommend cleaning the linebefore connecting your new Kenmore disposer.

You can do the job yourself with a drain auger. Remove thedrain trap and, using the auger, clean out the horizontal drainpipe that runs from the trap to the main waste pipe.

ENSION TUBE

A.

Use a pipe wrench to loosen thenut at the top of the drain trap.

Next, remove the nut at the top ofthe sink strainer and remove theextension tube.

Now, remove the large nut at the base of the sink strainer by placing thetip of your screwdriver on the edge of the nut. (There are usually ridgesto hold your screwddver.) Then strike the head of the screwdriver witha hammer in a counterclockwise direction.

Di

Loosen the nut until you can spin itoff by hand.

E.

Now, push the strainer up throughthe sink hole and remove it.

ELECTRICALSUPPLY.

Before you begin this job, you should be thoroughly

familiar with electrical power and proper procedures. Local

electrical codes must be followed. If you are not sure, callin a professional who is knowledgeable.

This appliance is equipped with copper wires. Use 3 con-

ductor copper cable in accordance with your local code tomake your connections to the unit.

First, remove the fuse or turn off thecircuit breaker on the circuit you plan

to use for your disposer. Use aseparate 15 or 20 amp., 115 volt cir-cuit for the disposer.

If you are replacing an old disposer, skip to Step 6.

Except for batch feed models, thisdisposer requires that a wall switchwith a marked off position and wired todisconnect all ungrounded supplyconductors be installed within sight ofthe disposer sink opening.

It will be necessary to install a 20 amp.wall switch above the countertop and ajunction box under the sink asillustrated.

Position the switch in any convenientlocation, and connect to junction box.All wiring must comply with localelectrical codes.

14 gauge size wire is the smallest per-missible for use with a 15 amp. circuit, and 12 gauge size wire is the smallestpermissible for use with a 20 amp.circuit.

CLEAN THE OLDSEALANT FROMTHE RIM OF THESINK HOLE"

Use your screwdriver or a putty knife to scrape away alltraces of the old putty or caulking from the edge of the sinkdrain hole. Make sure you get this as clean as possible sothat you'll have a good, water-tight seal for your newdisposer sink sleeve.

15 NOW, ATTACH THE DISPOSER DISCHARGE TUBETO YOUR SINK'S DRAIN TRAP.

First, check inside thedisposer grinding cham-ber to remove any objectsor dirt that might havedropped in,

Turn the disposer around to attach the discharge tube. Some models use a rubber washer that must be assem-bled to the discharge tube before putting the metalflange over the discharge tube, see 'D'. Secure metalflange using the edge tab on the flange and screw. Onother models, put the rubber washer in the dischargetube opening. Slip the metal flange over the dischargetube. Using the screw(s) provided, attach the flange todisposer, see 'E'.

Em

In D. install the discharge tube gasket ontothe discharge tube. Gasket must be installed asshown to assure a leak-proof installation. In E.install discharge tube gasket into disposerdischarge outlet. Gasket will be held in place bythe discharge tube flange.

Discharge

Turn the disposer so thatthe discharge tube linesup with your drain trap.Slip the drain trap over thedischarge tube.

TUBE TOO LONG? Sim-ply cut off as much as youneed to with a hack saw.Make sure you have aclean, straight cut.

TUBE TOO SHORT? If thedischarge tube doesn'treach your drain trap outlet, measure the difference. Then buy a drain extensiontube.

If it fits - simply tighten the slipnut on the trap with a pipewrench to make your connec-tion to the discharge tubecomplete.

NOTE: Be sure you comply withall applicable plumbing codes.

16 DISHWASHER DRAIN CONNECTION.NOTE: (If necessary) An approved dishwasher drain connection kit is available from Sears.

7 NOW, LOCK THEDISPOSER INPLACE.

Place the end of your "wren-chette" or a screwdriver into theleft side of one of the mountingring lugs at the top of thedisposer. Then, turn the "wren-chette" or screwdriver to theright until the disposer locks inplace.

8 CHECK FORLEAKS

Run water through thedisposer. Then, place thestopper in the sink sleeve inthe seal position. Fill thesink with water.

Finally, remove the stopperand let the water drain.Check for leaks at all plumb-ing connections and at thetop of the disposer and cor-rect, ifyou need to.

19 CHECK DISPOSER OPERATIONTurn electrical power back onat your service panel (fuse box or circuit breaker box). Turn on thecold water and leave running, turn on the disposer. You may wish to check again for leaksbefore turning the disposer off.

"ER USAGE - ALL MODELSrecommended water flow for efficient grinding

is 1 1/2 gallons per minute (medium to full faucetflow.) Remember to turn the water on first, andthen the disposer to avoid a possible drain block-age. After grinding is complete, the disposer andwater may be turned off.

Depending upon your particular installation, it maybe necessary to allow a water flush after grindingto completely clear the horizontal drain line. Thewater flow time after grinding will depend on thequantity of food waste that was ground, and thelength of the horizontal drain line. Ground foodwaste and water flow at an approximate rate of 2seconds per foot in a properly pitched horizontaldrain pipe.

DO'S AND DON'TS

IIREMEMBER THESE OPERATING INSTRUC-TIONS WHEN USING YOUR DISPOSER.- DO NOT INSERT HAND INTO THE DISPOSER.- IF THE DISPOSER JAMS, OR THE MOTOR

PROTECTOR TRIPS, DISCONNECT THEPOWER TO THE DISPOSER BEFORE FREE-ING THE JAM, OR RESETTING THE MOTOR

_ PROTECTOR.WARNING

- USE THE STOPPERS IN THE DRAIN/GRINDPOSITION WHILE GRINDING TO MINIMIZEPOSSIBLE EJECTION OF MATERIAL.

Stoppers are in drain/grind position.

flush disposer for cleaning. Allow disposer

and cold water to run after grinding or after drain-ing sink of dish water. Some detergents arecaustic; flushing will pass such material into thedrain line without disposer damage.DON'T use hot water when grinding food waste. However, hot water can be drained into thedisposer between grinding periods.DON'T turn off motor or water until grinding iscompleted and only a motor and water sound isheard.DON'T become alarmed if a brown discolorationappears on the face of the grinding disc. This isnormal. It is a surface discoloration only and willnot affect the life or performance of the disposer.

DON'T grind extremely fibrous material like cornhusks, artichokes, etc. to avoid possible drainblockage.

If you should encounter an objectionable odorcoming from your disposer, it may be the wateritself, which in some areas develops a slight odorat times. Or it may be coming from bits of foodwaste left inside the disposer, because the unitwas turned off before the grind cycle was com-pleted or not enough water was used. Try thisremedy, after all remaining food waste is dis-posed of inside the unit:Heat a large pan of water (approximately 3 to 4quarts). To this add one-half cup of baking soda.Mix in thoroughly so it is completely dissolved. When water reaches approximate boiling point, turn disposer on and pour heated mixture intosink. This hot, swirling, treated water will thenflush the inside of the disposer housing.

INSTRUCTIONS PERTAINING TO A RISK OF FIRE, ELECTRICAL SHOCK, OR INJURY TO PERSONS.IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

WARNING: When using electric appliances, basicprecautions should always be followed, including thefollowing:

1.Read all the instructions before using theappliance.

t_.To reduce the risk of injury, close supervision isnecessary when an appliance is used nearchildren.

3. Do not put fingers or hands into a garbagedisposer.

4. Turn the power switch to the off position before

attempting to clear a jam or remove an objectfrom the disposer.

5,When attempting to loosen a jam in a garbagedisposer, use a self-service wrenchette asdescribed below.

6,When attempting to remove objects froma garbage disposer use long-handled tongs orpliers.

7, To reduce the risk of injury by materials that maybe expelled by a food waste disposer place thestopper in the drain grind position. Use carewhen feedine the food waste so that foreian

obiects do not enter the arind chamber that maybe exuelled. Reolace the anti-splash baffle whenit becomes worn to reduce sDlashina and election.

Do not put the following into a disposer:a. Clam and oyster shells.b. Drain cleaner.

c. Glass, china, plastic, plastic wrap or bags.d. Large whole bones.e. Metal, such as bottle caps, tin cans, aluminum

foil or eating utensils.8.When not operating a disposer, leave the drain

cover in place to reduce the risk of objects falling

into the disposer.9. Before pressing red reset button, (see Fig. 4),

be sure the wall switch is in the off positionand on batch feed models remove the stopperfrom the run position.

10,a.GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS FOR CORD

CONNECTED UNITS. This appliance must begrounded. In the event of a malfunction orbreakdown, grounding provides a path of leastresistance for electric current to reduce the risk

of electric shock. If this appliance is equippedwith a cord having an equipment+grounding

conductor and a grounding plug, the plug mustbe plugged into an appropriate outlet that isproperly installed and grounded in accordancewith all local codes and ordinances.

DANGER - Improper connection of the equip-ment-grounding conductor can result in a risk ofelectric shock. Check with a qualified electri-cian or serviceman if you are in doubt as towhether the appliance is properly grounded.

NENTLY CONNECTED UNITS: This appli-ance must be connected to a grounded, metal, permanent wiring system; or an equipment-grounding conductor must be run with thecircuit conductors and connected to the

equipment-grounding terminal or lead on theappliance.

SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

USER MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Trouble Shooting

Loud noises while your disposer is operatingare usually caused by dropping metal ob-jects into the disposer. To correct this, turnoff the disposer switch and water. Aftergrinding disc has stopped turning, investi-gate. Remove object by reaching into unitwith tongs.

Motor stops while your disposer is opera-ting. This can be caused by overloading theunit. First, check the cause of the over-load - often some foreign material is in thedisposer. To avoid personal injury turn

off the disposer switch and water. Removethe object as previously explained. TORESTART THE MOTOR: wait 3 to 5 min-utes, then push in on the small red resetbutton located on the bottom of your disposer(Fig. 1). If motor remains inoperative, checkyour Service Panel and replace any blownfuses, or look for a tripped circuit breaker.

NOTE: If water does not drain as readily asyou think it should, and food waste tends tofloat or take too long to grind, don't reduce

water flow to solve this problem. It is verylikely that the drain line is partially cloggedand should be cleaned with a drain auger. Ablocked drain may also cause food waste todrain into the dishwasher. Like any precisionmachine, your disposer was built to performa particular job. If unusual demands are plac-ed on it, service interruptions are possible. These service interruptions, mentionedbelow,, are usually not serious and in mostcases, can be remedied without calling aservice technician.

To Save The Cost of a Service Call to Free a Jam.

To save the cost of a service call to free a jam.The accidental entry of foreign material will cause anydisposer to jam occasionally. To free jammed material, follow these steps to avoid persona! injury:1. Turn off disposer and shut off coldwater.

2. Insert one end of yo0r Self-Service Wrenchette pro-vided with your disposer, into the center hole of the bot-tom of the disposer as shown. (Fig. 2).

3. Work the Wrenchette back and forth until it movesfreely for at least one complete revolution. Removeforeign object with tongs. Remove Wrenchette beforerestarting disposer.

4, Wait 3 to 5 minutes to allow disposer motor to cool andthen push red reset button, (Fig. 1).Before pressing redreset button be sure the wall switch is In the offposition and on batch feed models remove thestopper from the run position.Your Self-Service Wrenchette will free virtually every jamthat may occur due to foreign objects entering thedisposer. Very rarely, however, a piece of metal (bobbypin, thumb tack, paper clip, silverware, etc.) causes ajammed condition too tight for your Self-Service

Wrenchette to handle. To free this type of jam, apry bar ortool must be used.

Be sure wall switch is turned off. Remove as much food A pry bar or tool should be inserted through the sinkwaste from the disposer as is possible with tongs. Use a opening into the disposer. The end then must be placedflashlight to determine the direction the unit was running alongside the grinding protrusion near the outside edgeat the time of the jam+ of the grinding disc. Be sure to place the pry tool on the

proper side of the protrusion so when pressure is applied

the grinding disc will move in the proper direction to un-L__ 1 _ jam the disposer. (see Fig+3). Do not drop or hammerOnprybar.
