Dimension is the key Element in Furnishing a Food technology Facility Food technology is a largely unfamiliar concept to most consumers. Traditionally, many consumers were reluctant to accept the concept of utilizing technology in food production. However, now the case is different, with people relying more on technology, they are open to different types of food technology. Food Technology facilities need to allow individuals the flexibility to analyze, prepare and cook food as well as study theoretical topics such as diet, nutrition and the role of the food industry. Cooking spaces need to provide facilities for general research and design activities as well as practical purpose. These rooms are common in schools and learning institutes to provide accessible equipment to all students for development of daily living skills, design technology and even science related to food. Food Technology rooms or spaces must be designed and furnished enabling maximum flexibility both within and between the working place. These rooms must be well informed with the concerns related to comfort and safety of the staff using the space.

Dimensions are important considerations while designing the layout for a food technology room. Inappropriately sized furniture can affect the comfort and concentration of an individual leading to neck or back pains which affects the work productivity. Sufficient leg space, adjustable chairs for use with computers and design of tables are some of the ergonomic issues to consider while choosing furniture for food technology spaces. Tables should be provided useful for theory work, discussion, tasting, presenting and serving food produced in practical sessions- they can be either basic tables of varying heights or tables with trolleys to ensure smooth movement.

These tables - basic, specialized or benches, have plastic laminate work surface with strong core materials which are sturdy and well-bonded as these tables may be subjected to heavy use. With increasing use of laptops, some of which may be wireless, schools should consider applying this requirement to all tables. Finishes should be smooth to ensure they are easy to clean, water and heat resistant and, if fixed, fully sealed to avoid water penetration. Deeply scratched surfaces can harbor dirt and bacteria, so stainless steel, which is hard and therefore difficult to scratch deeply, is often used in commercial catering facilities. Seating also requires thorough research and different types of seats and chairs are desirable to suit the diverse nature of food technology. Stackable chairs, stools and adjustable chairs are some of the seating options for a Food Technology Room. Stackable chairs or laminated wooden chairs are useful and inexpensive, easy to clean and lightweight. Stools are mostly used with standing height tables and allow freedom of movement for individuals and can be stored under the table when not in use. Adjustable chairs are ideal when computers are being used enabling proper alignment of the body with relation to the tables and chairs. Keeping storage in

mind, these rooms can be furnished with storage units such as shelving systems, cabinets etc. Hence, food technology facilities require top quality furniture and equipment for a smooth learning and cooking experience.
