Best Practices Shared by Parishes
Invite parishioners to donate their clipped coupons: coffee, food, diapers, children’s vitamins,
shampoo/soap, dish/laundry detergent, and household cleaning products.
Host a themed collection, e.g., Super Bowl (canned soups), Baby Shower (infant formula,
baby food, diapers)
Conduct a “reverse” collection during the 5th Sunday (small slips of paper indicating a
preferred item to bring to Mass for the food pantry next weekend)
$5 or $10 gift cards from local grocery or pharmacy to purchase fresh produce or medication
Host a local fire department spokesperson to connect with residential home owners that are
eligible for free smoke detectors. Or host an employment agency to help find employment
MyPlate Food Model
The “MyPlate” Food Model of the Hunger Task Force
showcases the five main food groups.
Grains (Whole Grains) Protein (Lean)
Vegetables (Low Sodium) Fruits (Natural Juices)
Dairy (Low Fat)
Donations to food pantries are encouraged based on this
food model, as well as donations of culturally appropriate
items.
