IMPORTANCE OF FOOD LABELS
• The Nutritional Facts food label gives us information about which nutrients are in the food.
• Your body needs the right combination of nutrients, such as vitamins, in order to grow and develop properly.
• There are laws that make sure the consumer knows vital information about food. Follow this link to see items that MUST by law be shown on food. foods you should be eating let’s look
at an actual label on food!
PARTS OF THE LABEL
• The ingredients list gives us information about what is inside the food we are about to eat. If something is listed first that means there is more of it in the product. The smaller amounts of ingredients are listed last.
• The Serving size is the amount of food experts recommend you eat in one setting.
• The Servings per container tells us how many servings we could get of the serving size in one container. If there are 15 servings per one box of cookies and each serving size is 2 cookies , there are enough cookies for 30 kids in a class to have 1 cookie. Math comes in handy with food labels.
• Calories and Calories from fat tells you the amount of energy in the food. Calories in food can come from fat, protein, or carbohydrates.

• Total fat is the number of fat grams contained in one serving of the food. Fat is an important nutrient but you do not want too much!
• Cholesterol , Sodium (salt), and Potassium numbers tell you how much is in a single serving. These numbers are usually measured in milligrams (mg) rather than grams.
• Total Carbohydrate is measured per serving. This number is broken down into two parts Dietary Fiber and Sugars.
• Protein is measured per serving and usually in grams. Protein is essential to muscle growth, blood, and organs.
