Food balance sheet• Food balance sheet refers to the

total amount of food available for human consumption in the country.

• Food balance sheet is based on frequently updated food and agricultural statistics.

• Both household surveys and food balance sheets provide data on food supply/consumption.

• Differences in the concepts, definitions in the methodology are the main reasons for the discrepancies.

Household consumption survey• The household survey is confined

to the part flowing to the household sector.

• Food consumption obtained through household surveys can be classified into two types:

1.-from income/expenditure/budget surveys, are the quantities of food available to or acquired by the household; 2.- the second type are estimates of the quantities of food intakes, which is ideal from the nutritional point of view.

Food balance sheet• Food balance sheets measure the total

quantity of food flowing into both:– the household and non-household

sectors.

• Food data derived from food balance sheets should > from household surveys.

• Reliability of the data from food balance sheets depends on the available range and accuracy of basic statistics.

Household consumption survey• The household surveys normally do

not cover food consumption in the non-household sector.

• Reliability of data from the household surveys depends on the magnitude of sampling and non-sampling errors

.

Food balance sheet• Reference period for food balance

sheet is the calendar year

• Food balance sheets provide data on the national average of food supplies.

• In the absence of data from household surveys, food balance sheet data provide a good proxy for food consumption levels of the population as a whole.

• Provide no indication of the food consumption levels:

– of people living in different geographic areas of the country,

– or in different occupations, – or at different income levels.

Household consumption survey• Reference period for the survey is

the averages during the course of a year.

• Food consumption data obtained through household surveys provide a better estimation of the actual level of food consumption, provided that food eaten away from home is included.

• Household surveys provide details on the distribution of food consumption among different population groups.

Food balance sheet• Food balance sheets measure the

total quantity of food flowing into both:

– the household and non-household sectors, without taking into account losses of edible food and nutrients in these sectors.

Household consumption survey

• Among such surveys only the specialized food consumption surveys take into account losses and wastage at the household level.

MAIN CONCLUSIONS

• The overall per caput estimate obtained from the household survey is not expected to be the same as that from the food balance sheet.

• The difference will therefore depend on the share of consumption in the non-household sector (restaurants, street food, public houses, hospitals, army barracks, etc.).

• The difference may be smaller in cases where the household survey has attempted to take account of food eaten away from home.

• The two sets of data are complementary: FBS and HS.

• The difference between the two figures should be minimal and their trends should be similar.
