We need energy to work and play. Food provides us with energy.

We also need food to grow and to remain healthy by fighting diseases.

Eating only one type of food will not give our body everything it needs to work, play, grow and fight diseases. This is because our body needs different substances for doing

different things. These substances are called nutrients.

Some nutrients provide us with energy, some help us grow and some help us tofight diseases. Different foods have different nutrients. Therefore, to remain fit

and healthy, we need to eat different foods.

ProteinsFood & Nutrients

Proteins are nutrients that our body needs to grow. They are also needed to repair damaged parts of our body. That is why they are called body-building nutrients.

Proteins are found in milk, cheese, eggs, fish, meat and pulses.

CarbohydratesFood & Nutrients

Sugars and starches are carbohydrates. They are needed by your body to get quick energy. That is why they are called energy-giving nutrients.

Cereals such as rice, wheat and maize are rich in carbohydrates. So are foods made from cereals such as bread, chapatis or dosa. Sugar, things containing sugar, as well as

potatoes and bananas are rich in carbohydrates.

FatsFood & Nutrients

Fats are nutrients that also provide us with energy. They are stored in the body for future use. The energy stored in them is used when the body does not get enough

food to eat. Fats also keep our body warm. Oil, butter, cheese and nuts are rich in fats.

Vitamins & Minerals

Food & Nutrients

Vitamins and minerals are nutrients that our body needs in very small amounts. They help our body to work properly and fight disease. They are therefore called protective

foods. There are several vitamins and minerals that our body needs.

Food & Nutrients

Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, liver, milk, eggs and bread are rich in vitamins. They contain several minerals also.

CalciumFood & Nutrients

Calcium is an important mineral needed by children to form healthy bones and teeth. It is found in milk and leafy green vegetables.

IronFood & Nutrients

Iron is needed for making blood. It is found in nuts, leafy greens, red meat, cereals. Legumes, citrus fruits, dry fruits and fish.

WaterFood & Nutrients

Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals are the five types of nutrients our body needs. Besides these, our body also needs sufficient amount of water to stay healthy. Water

helps the body to digest food, get rid of waste and use the nutrients properly.

Balanced DietFood & Nutrients

The food that we eat every day is our diet. Our diet must provide our body with all the nutrients in proper quantities for us to be fit and healthy. Such a diet is

called a balanced diet.

Balanced DietFood & Nutrients

No food contains all the nutrients in the necessary amounts. For a balanced diet, therefore, we need to eat a variety of food everyday. To make the selection of a balanced diet easier, food

items have been divided into the four groups. A balanced diet should contain food items from each of these groups.

Protein Group : Meat, eggs, fish, beans, nuts, peas, etc.

Milk Group : Milk, cheese, curd, ice-cream, etc.
