A ramp makes moving things easier.

Ramps Help!Expository Text

Read the story and talk about it.

Essential QuestionHow do the Earth’s forces affect us?

Where have you seen a ramp? We use ramps to move things. People walk or use wheelchairs on ramps. Ramps help us get into buildings. Ramps are all around us.

It’s hard to get a box on a truck. The box’s weight, or heaviness, makes it difficult to move. It takes a lot of force to move heavy things.

Push the box up a ramp. Now it takes less force to move it. The ramp holds some of the box’s weight for you.

People use ramps to get to higher places. You may wish to go up a hill. A path may have ramps. The path does not go straight up. But it is an easy way to get to the top.

We use ramps every day. Ramps make moving things and getting places easy.

So Many Stars!Fiction

Read the story and talk about it with someone in your home.

Essential QuestionWhat can we see in the sky?

Dad took Luis and Lola to visit Uncle Jorge in the country. They arrived at Uncle Jorge’s house after dark.

Luis looked up at the dark nighttime sky and said, “Look at all the stars!”

Lola asked, “Why are there more stars in the country?”

“They are the same stars that you have at home,” Uncle Jorge said. “You have streetlights and house lights where you live. Those lights make it hard to see the stars. It is easier to see the stars here because it’s dark.”

“Stars can form interesting shapes,” Luis said.

Uncle Jorge looked up. He spotted a group of stars. “That

is Orion the hunter. The three stars in the middle are his belt. The two stars at the top are Orion’s shoulders.”

Dad said, “I have an idea. Let’s eat outdoors! We can look at the stars while we eat.”

“This is going to be anadventure!” Luis said.
