Teaching Through Storytelling

Storytelling has been identi-fied as a teach-ing tool for organiza-tional learning. This course will demonstrate how stories enhance learning experiences in oral pathology. Using a methodical approach in the diagnostic process, multiple real life stories will show reasons for the lesions, capture interest, and create a forum for discussion. Participants will reference courses they are teaching to identify one or more objectives for which storytelling may assist them in the learning environment. Use of the six components of the di-agnostic process will assist students in creating asso-

ciations between clinical observations and their newly acquired knowledge base. Olga Ibsen, RDH MS is a world-renowned authority on oral patholo-gy and the coauthor of Oral Pathology for the Dental Hygienist With General Pathology Intro-ductions, now in its 7th edition. A trusted opinion leader on this subject, she also is an adjunct profes-sor at the University of Bridgeport and New York University College of Dentistry in the Depart-ment of Oral & Maxillofa-cial Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, and a con-sultant member to the Commission on Dental Competency Assess-

ments. In 2016 she received the Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene from the Amer-ican Dental Hygienists’ Association and in 2017 was honored with the Esther Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Dimen-sions of Dental Hygiene.

Do you cringe when

you hear the words: assessment, out-comes, rubrics? This workshop will provide an oppor-tunity to revisit key elements of stu-dent assessment and explore the impact of rubrics on student learn-ing. Well-designed rubrics have the power to foster academic success and communicate expectations (transparency) to students, result-ing in more effective grading with measurable outcomes. Participants are asked to bring a sample rubric to the workshop to share their knowledge and experience with col-leagues. Lastly, initial results of a new assessment rubric implement-

There is a growing school of thought pro-moting the concept that our students are our customers. This in no way diminishes the emphasis on academ-ic rigor, but it does take into account the perspective of the student when designing and teaching college-level courses. The ultimate goal is to ex-plore ways this concept can translate into higher student retention.

This session is focused on student engagement and upping the ante regarding interactivity in the class-room. The session will include the sharing of thoughts and ideas of ex-amples of hands-on methodologies that have been successfully time-tested in a variety of main campus

and online classroom settings.

The core concepts at play here is a simple pedagogical paradigm, es-sentially:

Earn Respect. Build Trust. Teach.

Art Mollengarden, MBA believes one of the most valuable life skills that he can impart to his students is the ability to learn and adapt. “Learning does not stop by merely remembering new con-cepts—rather, success comes from understanding and synthesizing that understanding into practical knowledge”.

Mr. Mollengarden has the ability to make this experience ‘come alive’ by relating both current and established business princi-

ples/concepts into the classroom. His students benefit from his deep experience working with businesses at small, medium, and large organ-izations. His students learn beyond the pages of textbooks by blending case studies and real-life examples of business success (and failures).

Harold A. Henson, RDH, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene and is Direc-tor for Center of Teaching and Learning at The University of Tex-as School of Dentistry at Houston. He has taught all levels of dental education: post-graduate, gradu-ate and undergraduate.

Dr. Henson holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology with minor in Psychology from the University of Houston. He earned a certificate in dental hygiene from The Uni-versity of Texas School of Dentis-try at Houston. He continued his graduate studies by completing a Master of Education in Allied

How do we keep stu-

dents engaged in the classroom/clinic when teaching generation of digital learners? It is not an easy task! The theory of active learning, its elements, benefits and challenges will be reviewed. The presenter will share her teach-ing tips and exercises to effectively engage students in meaningful conversation in different areas of the dental hygiene curriculum that produce positive learning out-comes. This course will provide the opportunity for participants to

engage in hands-on activities to apply discussed techniques and strategies related to theory, case-based scenarios, ethics, medical emergencies management and pa-thology.

Focus will be spent on discussing and demonstrating various forms of active learning techniques and strategies relevant to student par-ticipation.

Tomira Rozar , RDH, DHSc is an Assistant Professor and Clini-cal Coordinator in the Department of Dental Hygiene at Bergen Com-munity College in Paramus, New Jersey. She has been in private

practice since 2001, and an educator since 2005. Dr. Rozar currently teaches Oral Hygiene I (Pre-clinical course), Oral Hygiene II, and Gen-eral and Oral Pathology. She has authored Continuing Education for Dimensions of Dental Hygiene.

Traditionally ultra-sonic instrumentation has been taught in the middle or later within the dental hygiene curriculum. However, recent educational research indicates that more dental hygiene programs are moving ultrasonic in-strumentation into the pre-clinical course simultaneously with hand in-strumentation. This presentation will discuss and describe curriculum se-quencing of powered instrumentation from pre-clinic to graduation. Small group discussion will also focus on current trends of the environmental landscape for powered scaling from experienced clinicians to graduates entering into clinical practice.
