Tresurer’s Report The financial state at Fairmount continues to be strong, but I would like to share a bit of news with the congregation. As of July 31, 2015, the income collected for Fairmount's operations are $509,202, which includes $328,432 in Tithes & Offerings. The Tithes & Offerings collections have performed a bit more slowly than we anticipated. This number is down $64,829 from the same period in 2014, which is over a 16% drop. The financial health of the church depends on the tithes & offerings received by the congregation. We anticipate greater receipts in the coming winter months, but please remember how critical your pledge fulfillment is to Fairmount. Expenses to date are $716,694. This is $63,313 (or approximately 8%) lower than budgeted. However, the net operations are more than $200,000 in the red for the calendar year to date. This is somewhat expected due to the mismatch of receipts and expenses, but the YTD lag in receipts compounds the deficit in operations and causes us to remain conservative in our year-to-year growth projections. As we begin the process of planning and budgeting for fiscal year 2016, I want you to know what your tithes and offerings mean to the work of FPC. We strive to live boldly into the mission and objectives defined by Session, but your promises ultimately determine how far we can go. I appreciate your continued devotion, and I wish I was there in person to see all of the exciting things that are happening!

Sincerely,

Luke Crawford Treasurer

Session Report The Spirit of God is busy at Fairmount, as the normally quiet August Session meeting was full of important work. After learning more about the candidate from Amy Kim Kyremes-Parks, our Director of Spiritual Formation, the Session approved the hiring of Sarah Kok, a recent graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, as the full-time Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. Sarah will begin her work with us in early September.

In response to the Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage, the Session voted unanimously to permit the marriage of same-sex couples at Fairmount Presbyterian Church and to apply the current wedding practices and policies to same-sex couples who submit a wedding request. As a congregation that has long supported the full inclusion of GLBTQ members and friends into the life of the church, the Session was excited to provide our sanctuary to same-sex couples who wish to enter into the covenant of marriage. During the pastor's report the Elders were also given the outline for the 2016 budget creation process, learned about this year's stewardship theme (Celebrating our Foundation), and received a report regarding my development conversations with members that are a part of Session's plan to increase membership giving to support our growing ministries and mission. After conducting all the necessary business, using Jeremiah 29:11 as a frame, "For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope,” the elders formally began the process of discerning how the former manse would best support the mission and ministry of the church. As always, the Session asks for your prayers as they seek to discern God's will for our congregation. All Session-related documents are available for your review online. Blessings, Pastor Derek

Office Re-locations As the staff planned for the upcoming program year, they decided to re-arrange their offices to enhance their ministries and to encourage collaboration with colleagues. Bob Moncrief, our Minister of Music, now is located in Room 206, a wonderfully bright and cheery corner office at the top of the southeast stairwell. Amy Kim Kyremes-Parks, our Director of Spiritual Formation, is now located on the first level in Room 117, a double office located in the Chapel wing hallway facing the Garth. Adjacent Room 115 will be the office of the new Director of Youth and Young Adults, Sarah Kok. Our new Parish Associate, Susan Holderness, is located on the second level in Room 201, next to Pastor Eric Dillenbeck’s office, Room 202. Our custodial staff has moved upstairs to the second level to Room 205. There is a new Mother’s Nursing area in Room 101 in Andersen Hall. The Infant Toddler Room (Nursery) has now moved to the lower level in Room 1 next to the elevator. Room 114 (the former “Social Room”) is being readied to become an air-conditioned meeting room and a Godly Play classroom. If you would like to see a diagram of the room assignments, the link is located on the contact page of our website, www.fairmountchurch.org.

Leadership: Celebrating Matthew Bailey We have been so blessed to have Matthew Bailey serve as our Interim Director for Youth and Young Adult Ministries. September 13th, Celebrate Sunday, will mark Matt’s last Sunday in the position, as well as the first Sunday for our new Director Sarah Kok. Matt stepped in and provided great leadership and helped us build energy and deeper relationships in the areas of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. The continued blessing and beauty is that Matt will remain a part of our Fairmount Family and a faithful volunteer and partner in ministry. When you see Matt, please thank him for his energy, his time and his contribution to ministry here at Fairmount.

The Fairmount Family is invited to the Ordination Service for Terra Winston - September 19th at 11:00am Terra Winston, a candidate for ministry under the care of our congregation, is the Delegations Coordinator and Interim Care Coordinator for Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT). Her work with CPT gives her the privilege of working with partners from local grassroots organizations who strive towards non-violent peacemaking to transform violence and oppression in areas of conflict. CPT currently has teams in Canada working alongside Indigenous Communities, Colombia, Iraqi Kurdistan, and Palestine. In recent years CPT has also resumed work on the US/ Mexico Border and in Detroit.

Her favorite part of this work is processing the experience of delegates returning to their home countries having engaged in intense work with partners, helping them to think how this relates to their faith and how to advocate in their own home communities. Terra relies heavily on her faith and her Reformed understanding of theology as she engages her call. Therefore she feels blessed that the Presbytery of Chicago has chosen to recognize her work as a specialized ministry and looks forward to celebrating her ordination at Fairmount, her home church. She also asks for prayers as she will be leading a delegation to Iraqi Kurdistan at the end of August.

Cultural Competency Workshop Focusing on The Culture of Dominance Saturday, September 26th, 9:00am-3:00pm

Friends, it is time our church had a conversation about dominance. We are bound to a broken world and it is clear that there is work to be done in this country, our state, our city, our neighborhood and yes, our church, and that work needs to start now. As Christ's disciples, called to make this world look more like God's realm of justice, mercy, and peace, we need to learn how to talk and listen, together, about issues of race, gender, inequality, and dominance. The Pastors and Staff have already begun this important conversation under the direction of Rev. Jessica Vasquez Torres, who comes to us from Crossroads Anti-Racism Training (http://crossroadsantiracism.org/). At the end of September, Rev. Vasquez Torres will return to Fairmount with another colleague to engage our Elders and Deacons during a special training, and the wider Fairmount Community in similar teaching and conversations. Conversations around dominance in the church will also be the topic of the first four weeks of Adult Education along with readings from "Privilege, Power, and Difference, 2nd Edition" by Allan G. Johnson All are invited to attend the big group session on Saturday, September 26th, 9:00am-3:00pm. This big group session will be a series of talks and breakout sessions that will facilitate where we, as a community, are sensing the Spirit’s call to action both personally and as a body of Christ. We strongly encourage youth to attend. They will be a part of the wider conversation as well as break into their own group for some discussion. Childcare will be available for Saturday’s session. As we prepare for this time, we invite you to pray for our world that is on the cusp of so many events, emotions and decisions to be made. May God use our Fairmount community as a conduit for understanding, personal growth, and action. Please RSVP for this event by calling the church office, 216.321.5800, or by emailing Christine at [email protected].

Growing in Faith: Studying the Sunday Text Beginning Wednesday, September 9th at 9:00am, and continuing throughout the year, Pastor Derek invites you to join others in discussing with him the Bible passages that he will be preaching on in the coming weeks. Come when you can, as often as you can. Weekly attendance is not required. This gathering is a unique opportunity to dive deeper into the texts that will frame worship and add to your insight on the biblical texts that will be preached.

November - WOMEN’S STUDY on Wearing God: An Exercise in Enriching Our Spiritual Imagination - Lauren F. Winner. Harper Collins. We will explore the notion of how we are “clothed with Christ” or how “God fits us like a garment. ” Then analyze how clothing functions culturally to shape our ideals and identify our community, and ruminate on how this metaphor can function to create new possibilities for our lives.

October - Soul Journaling: Using online prompts, http://www.souljournaling.com/prompts.php, we will explore our creative spirit and talk about how the Spirit moves in the midst of art and how it can be a meditative process.

Education Hour for 2015-16: Sundays from 9:50am-10:50am In response to Christ’s claim on our life as his disciples, we commit to setting aside the space and the time each week to grow in faith. Every Sunday at 9:50am at church there are opportunities for all ages to do just that!

Here are some opportunities to grow in faith.

During the Second Worship Service 11:00 Worship in the Sanctuary- Each Sunday we ask that all children join their families for the beginning of worship until The Time for Young Disciples.

11:15ish WE Time - After the Time for Young Disciples, children preschool-3rd grade will be invited to join Mrs. Lang, Amy Kim, and other shepherds for WE TIME (Worship Enrichment). We will sing songs, experience the scriptures, pray together, and have a time of worship. We will collect our offering and then re-join the congregation during the offering to sing the closing hymn and receive the benediction. On the first Sunday of the month, Communion Sunday, we ask that elementary-aged children, K - 6th grade, stay for the entire worship service. Participation by children in these services is not only encouraged; it is vital to the energy and life of our worship. Pastors and staff will help create worship that specifically embraces all ages on these Sundays. (As always toddlers and children under 4 are welcome to be in the nursery anytime on Sunday morning.)

Montreat Two energizing and inspiring adult leaders and five nervous and excited teenage girls went to Montreat Youth Conference Center in North Carolina for a week in July. For me, it was an amazing experience. Not only did I get to praise God in new fun ways but I got to hear amazing sermons directed to kids like me, from intelligent men and women; I got to make friends with people from all over the country, deepen my relationship with the girls who went and hear ideas that strengthened my core beliefs.

I have praised and talked to God in many different ways, but none of them compare to how we did it at Montreat. Thousands of young people my age, in the celestial mountains, were led by preachers saying beautiful, scary things about our faith, what it is, what it does, how we don’t know all the answers and how this faith affects or should affect the life of a Presbyterian teenager. Everything that our two preachers said I fully believed in; and it all led me to thank or question God in the ways all of us should. Not everyone else attending Montreat believed as strongly as I did in what

was said. In our small groups, where we were separated from those we knew from back home, I heard a lot of things that were hard for me. But those things made me realize how lucky I am to have grown up and currently be living in a place that is so accepting and loving. I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy the trip so much if it hadn’t been for our group who went together. We came back every night, all seven of us and we talked: we talked about what we heard that day, what we learned and what made us uncomfortable. We were all okay with hearing these new, challenging, sometimes a little angering ideas from others in attendance because it opened our eyes and because we

could come back home after a long day and talk to people who shared our ideas about how we should live out our faith. I couldn’t have made it a week or gotten as much out of the trip without the foundation I have been given and the support of our amazing church. Montreat was absolutely life changing and amazing. I got to spend a week in the mountains with loud beautiful music, hearing new ideas, some I agreed with, some I didn’t, meeting new people and really worrying only about me and my relationship with God, and for that I am so thankful.

Stewardship by Peggy Roberts Gratitude Sunday, October 25th Thanks to many of you, through the gifts of your time, talents and treasure, the spirit of generosity at Fairmount Presbyterian is multiplying! As we approach Fairmount’s 100th anniversary in the Fall of 2016, the theme for this year’s stewardship campaign is “Celebrating our Foundation: Through Christ, Through Giving, Through Gratitude.” During the campaign we will reflect on how much there is to celebrate: our relationship with Christ, our vibrant congregation, a growing children’s and youth ministry, a music program second to none, a beautiful (and improving!) church building, and more opportunities through FPC than ever before to serve our community, together. Many of you are well on your way to fulfilling (and exceeding) your pledges for the 2015 pledge year. Thank you. Meeting those promises is essential as we invest in our capabilities to meet the needs of our congregation and our community. When we give to the church, we are truly living our values to be a congregation that is authentic, generous, inclusive, innovative and relevant. With all of the wonderful things happening at the church, we are asking each member of Fairmount to consider increasing their giving in support of current and future growth. Over the next two years we would like to increase our pledge base by $65,000 each year, so that by the end of 2017 Fairmount has a recurring pledge base of $130,000 more than it is today. We feel this is an achievable goal for our congregation. Strengthening our foundation of giving would allow us to meet Session’s mission commitment of 10% of our annual budget being directed towards outreach, while enabling us to maintain momentum and to continue to staff for growth. Please consider increasing your pledge to meet this goal.

Gratitude Sunday will be October 25. There will be an opportunity to pledge during church that day, or you can always pledge or give online (http://www.fairmountchurch.org/#/giving). You will be receiving a mailing about the pledge campaign in the coming weeks. Please contact Church Administrator Nancy Cochrane with questions about how to pledge or give ([email protected]).

Also, if you have not already, please prayerfully consider celebrating Fairmount Presbyterian Church's coming 100-Year Anniversary by making a provision for Fairmount in your estate plans. Through Legacy Giving we are able to designate a portion of what we have acquired while giving to our church. Just as our families have witnessed our faith and dedication to Fairmount while we are living, in death our relationship with the church does not stop. And most importantly, legacy gifts ensure that future generations at Fairmount will always be defined, be nurtured, and find a relationship with Christ as we have. Please contact Gordon Landefeld ([email protected]) if you are interested in learning more about Legacy Giving.

2015 Cleveland Pride Parade I am so thankful for our church's participation in the Cleveland Pride Parade and for Fairmount's affirmation that we are all beloved children of God.
