English:

The first week of April is Writers Week. Ask your student(s) who they saw perform in the auditorium during English class, and if they enjoyed it. We have a wide variety of writers coming in, so we hope they found someone they could connect to as a writer, learner, communicator. Seniors in either AP Literature or English 4: Composition will be starting I-Search presentations later this month. Many sophomores signed up for the field trip to Navy Pier and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater's production of Macbeth on May 1. There are a few tickets still available if stu-dents bring permission slip and money to their English teacher. This is an outstanding opportunity. English 3 students are starting the independent novel project in April. Students had a list of books to choose from and were encouraged to discuss the options with parents/guardians as a couple choices have heavy themes or topics. English 1 students are working on the Art of Persuasion with writing and speaking on persuasive topics.

Mathematics:

On Monday, April 2nd, the math department celebrated by inducting 112 students in the

Mu Alpha Theta National Honors Society. We are very proud of their hard work and

commend them on their performances. Congratulations to all!

Science:

The ACHS Science Department is extremely proud of Ms. Terlep! She was selected as one of only seven teachers from the United States to attend the GIFT (Geoscience Infor-mation For Teachers) Conference in Vienna, Austria where her time will be spent collab-orating, learning, and presenting to teachers from 24 different countries around the world! The presentation she will be completing is the Earthquake at ACHS activity she completes yearly in her Earth Science courses. Up on returning, Ms. Terlep will share her experience with her students, fellow teachers, and incorporate what she learned into her courses at ACHS.

Career and Tech Ed:

As part of the cake decorating unit the Creative Foods classes at Antioch were chal-

lenged to create a cake that had a children’s book theme. Cakes were displayed outside

the ILC during the lunch periods for students to vote on a favorite. Winnie the Pooh was

a clear winner with Dr. Seuss The Lorax coming in second.

Important Dates

Naviance Senior Exit Survey: Seniors are expected to complete the Senior Exit Survey through their Navi-ance account, prior to initiating the checkout process. Failure to do so will result in delay of cap and gown pick-up, as students will be asked to complete, the survey prior to obtaining regalia. The survey is an important part of our data collection process. Results from the survey are compiled to assess our program effectiveness, in addition to obtaining critical information for proper mailing of final transcripts. This step is vital to com-pleting the college admission process. Counselors will be going into English classes to assist with completion. Honor & High Honor Graduate Status: Students who finish their high school career with a cumulative GPA of 3.6 or higher will earn Honor status for graduation. High Honor graduates are recognized for earning a cumu-lative GPA of 4.0 or higher. The gray tassel for Honor graduates and multi-colored cords for High Honor gradu-ates will be distributed at graduation rehearsal. Students designated as honor students are to wear their gray tassels to the ceremony. Students designated as High Honor graduates are to wear their honor tassels in addi-tion to their cords to the ceremony. Cum Laude Graduation Status: Students that have earned Cum Laude recognition have met the six criteria of the program, which include: Scholarship (26 credits), Character (No suspensions during their four years), Volunteerism (completed 40 volunteer hours), Responsibility (maintained a 95% attendance average across all four years), Excellence (took a minimum of 3 Capstone classes), Pride (involvement in four extracurricular ac-tivities during their tenure as a student). A senior hood that they will wear during the ceremony will distin-guish students who have met all six of the aforementioned criteria. Hoods are to be returned at the end of the event. Zippy Zucchini

Zip through your day with a serving of Zucchini. This dark green-skinned vegetable is an excellent source of Potassium. It actually has more potassium than a Banana ! Zucchini are also a good source of vitamin A, C, and K, copper, manganese and fiber. Zucchini is a staple in many gardens; it is easy to grow and is a bountiful producer. Zucchini is one of the most versatile veggies to use when preparing meals. This mild flavored, crisp and tender vegetable can be used in soups, salads and even baked into breads. Try this green vegetable as a snack stick and zest it up with some tasty toppings!
