This short easy-going walk will take you to the historical Bolton Castle.
You can see the castle much as Turner did when he visited in July 1816
during his extensive tour of Yorkshire to sketch views for Whitaker’s A
General History of the County of York series. He enjoyed an afternoon
sketching different views of the castle and village. This was his last stop
in Wensleydale before he made his long journey on horseback over to
Swaledale.

Bolton Castle & Redmire Village
Continued...
To start this Turner Trail...
From Redmire village hall, walk over the green and up the hill with
the Bolton Arms on your left. Go under the railway bridge and turn
left onto the footpath and cross the bridge over Apedale Beck.
Walk up the meadows passing a tree growing through the middle
of an old barn to reach Castle Bolton Village.
Can you see how the cottages on both sides of the village green face south?
They make the most of the sun and give great views across
Wensleydale too.
Continue through the village to Bolton Castle. You can fi nd the
Turner Trails bench on the village green in front of the castle.
Bolton Castle is a spectacular medieval fortress that is over 600 years old.
Amazingly it is still occupied by a direct descendent of Sir Richard
le Scrope who had it built. Bolton Castle’s most famous visitor was
Mary Queen of Scots who was imprisoned here in 1568. Turner
was so inspired by the castle’s impressive location that he drew 12
sketches during his visit on the 29th July 1816.
If you wander around to the rear of the castle you will see a view
that remains the same now as when Turner drew it two centuries
ago.
The castle is open most days between March and October and
some days over the winter. Call 01969 623981 for current opening
hours and prices.
After visiting the castle, turn around and walk back through the
village and continue onto East Lane, passing Jackson’s Cottage on
your left.

When you reach the T-junction, turn right to head back
to Redmire. Go past the village hall and continue forward.
Turn right at the road junction and walk down the road until
reaching a sharp right hand bend. Cross over the road here
to a large tree with a bench underneath. Beyond the tree, go
down Mill Lane which is the right fork.
At the bottom of Mill Lane, turn right onto a footpath and
go down the hill to the river. Cross over an iron girder bridge
where Apedale Beck feeds into the River Ure and continue for
a short distance. You will see Redmire Force.
Redmire Force is a series of small waterfalls on the River Ure.
Return to the gate at the bottom of Mill Lane and cross the
lane. Turn right then go over the stile on your left and take
the footpath high above the river. Turn left at the end of
the footpath and continue through a large farm gate onto a
rutted track. Follow this all the way back to Redmire village.
04 INFO
INFOThe name Redmire means Reedy Marsh.
This is testament to how marshy this part of the dale was in
medieval times. St Mary’s Church has a fi ne carved Norman door
that is almost 1,000 years old.
In Victorian times most of the villagers were coal miners. Each
miner kept a cow and subscribed to a cow club. This paid for a
herdsman to look after the cattle while the miners worked at the
coal seams.
