Pyuthan municipality in collaboration with Narendra Gayetri Eye Hospital signed a
yearlong agreement to initiate free eye treatment and medicine service to the
elderly. Mayor, Mr. Arjun Kumar Kashyapati said that, “the municipality will
compensate treatment cost for a year.”

The award carrying a purse of Rs 20,000 is in recognition of contribution in
protecting the rights of the elderly citizens of the society. Parliament’s
Development Committee Chairperson, Mr. Rabindra Adhikari, conferred the award
on journalist Gautam.
The lawmaker also spoke of preparations underway for a constitutional provision
to protect the rights of the elderly citizens. The journalist stressed on need for
utilizing the capabilities of the senior citizens in country’s development.

OAA through Local Government

Government decided to distribute old age allowance (OAA) of 753 districts through
the local government from next fiscal year. Till now, district committee has been
responsible for distribution. Mr. Anil Kumar Thakur, Director of Department of Civil
Registration, informed that the government has appropriated Rs. 36 billion for
social security allowance. Government distributes social security allowance to
older people, single woman, people with different ability and children belonging to
so called lower caste.

Elderly of Saptari district queued for an hour and casted their votes in a local
election with the only expectation of getting old age allowance (OAA) easily. They
expressed inconveniency and irregularity in OAA distribution. One of many elderly
voters, Gangadevi Jha, 85, said, “I hope we will get OAA regularly at our doorstep
after this election.”

round of local level elections. “It is great opportunity to cast ballot and choose the

Elderly voters of Saptari district decided to cast vote for those candidates who are
committed for development of their community. One of many elderly voters,
Jabijan Khatun, 65, of Gadhimal Municipality said, “I casted my vote for six times,
but none of them worked for my community. So, I will vote for those who is
committed to work for develop my community”.

Phedikhola Rural Municipality of Syangja district started providing free health
check-up and medicine at the door step of local elderly. The programme was
inaugurated by providing health check-up to centenarian Mandhoj Thapa. “Most
of the elderly are compelled to live lonely after their children migrated to city
centre and abroad for better opportunities. So, we have planned to provide
bimonthly health check-up to the local elderly” said newly elected President of the
rural municipality, Mr. Ghana Shyam.

Annapurna transportation decided for free transportation service for elderly and
people with different ability. Newly elected Mayor of Kageswori Manohara
Municipality Mr. Krishna Hari Thapa inaugurated the programme. Now, 9 buses

Helpless Elderly

Yamkumari Bhusal, 62, of Nawalparasi district, whose son is imprisoned in Saudi
Arabia’s jail since 2014 is seeking justice. Sthaneswor Bhusal, the only son of
Yamkumari had gone Saudi for job and got imprisoned after failing to pay the
blood money. “I have reached every single ministry seeking help but could do
nothing," she said.
Meanwhile, Pravasi Nepali Coordination Committee (PNCC) is running a donation
campaign to collect the blood money for Sthaneshwar. PNCC opened an account
with 3901010000409 to raise funds.
Elderly Flood Victims Await Relief

Ram Kumari Devi Mandal, 70, a flood victim of Biratnagar, Morang district is
compelled to live in temporary shelter since three weeks. “The government
provided us with two kg rice and a tent a week after the floods. Thereafter neither
the government nor any other organization turned up here for our relief”,
lamented Ms. Mandal. She is just an example of many victims waiting for
substantial relief.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Lacking

The news published in the Himalayan Times revealed that Nepal did nothing to
raise awareness on Alzheimer’s and related dementia on the occasion of World
Alzheimer’s Day, 21st Sept. 2017. According to the 2011 census, about 4.4 percent
of population is above 65 years of age. Of them, as estimated 78,000 suffer from
Alzheimer’s according to Alzheimer’s Disease International. However few of them
reach the hospital for treatment. “Only one or two Alzheimer’s patients visited
the hospital in the past. However, the number has increased to about five per
week now”, said Dr. Ramesh Kandel, Alzheimer’s specialist at Patan government
hospital.
The government has been providingRs.100,000 to each Alzheimer’s patients
through four government hospitals i.e. Patan hospital, Bir hospital, Tribhuvan
University Teaching hospital and BP Koirala Memorial hospital.
