Follies An exhibition by Ed Kluz

11 June—3 July 2010

At Potterton Books London

‘Follies and nonsense, whims and inconsistencies do divert me.’

Henry Fielding 1743

The term folly encompasses a vast range of building types. Grottos, tea houses, towers, pavilions,

gazebos, pagodas, triumphal arches, gatehouses, castles, mausoleums, chapels, temples, belve-

deres, pyramids, obelisks, ballrooms, townhouses, cottages, mansions…

These pavilions of delight occupy a place between reality and fantasy. Sitting on the margins of

the imagination they transport, delight and sometimes unnerve.

Their seemingly whimsical appearance often disguises a very practical purpose. Gothick fantasy

summerhouses, pigsties resembling Greek temples, glass domed ballrooms sunk beneath the wa-

ters of a great lake, all of these are expressions of unconscious eccentricity.

As relics of other ages they often fall out of use, awaiting salvation or becoming the genuine ob-

jects of ruin and antiquity they once mimicked – silently sitting among a landscape whose nature

teases at their fabric, pulling them back to the earth from where they seemed to spring.

How much richer our land is for these man made curiosities which feed our imaginations and

capture our eccentricities.

and design and is interested in the architectural heritage of Britain.

‘My influences are diverse. I take delight from the smallest scrap of block printed wallpaper to the grandest of stately edifices. I spend as much time hunting the sites of long vanished buildings as I do those that stand. Whether decay has crept over or salvation ensured their survival I draw

pleasure from them all. The peculiar and eccentric excite me and I am sure that a lifetime’s worth of work will not uncover all of the hidden and forgotten joys this island holds.’

He has recently completed commissions for the publishers Faber and Random House and is due

to launch his first fabric designs with St Jude's later this year.
