Measurement for Process Control The PowderVision System is an in-line sampling device used to present productsin powder, granule or flake form, being transported in a duct or pneumatic conveying system, to a Series 710e backscatter NIR gauge, to enable practical real-time measurement of moisture and other parameters.

Powders, granules and flakes are often transported in enclosed systems which prevents the conventional approach of measuring the product on a band or vibro conveying system.

The PowderVision System overcomes presentation and access issues, by automatically capturing, measuring and releasing samples within the process.

PowderVision BenefitsUsing an NDC 710e Series Gauge with a PowderVision system offers users the following benefits:

■ Measure variations to enable control of the manufacturing process

■ Increase product yield, by operating closer to specification limits

■ Reduce startup/grade change times ■ Reduce scrap product ■ Reduce time spent by operators

collecting samples for labo testing ■ Reduce fossil fuel consumption

by operating drying processes efficiently, according to product moisture content

Designed for the ProcessThe PowderVision System meets the needs of food and industrial processes. It is:

■ Easy to install ■ Robust ■ Fully user programmable to set the

sampling period to suit the flow rate ■ Easily fitted to most pipes or ducts

conveying product in negative or atmospheric pressure

■ Adjustable so it can be inserted into the conveying system to optimize product collection

■ Designed to work with any NDC Series 710e NIR Backscatter Gauge and HMI

Pneumatic PowderVision System “PV-PS”:Selecting PowderVision for Your Process:The PowderVision’s unique design means it can be used with a wide range of

powders from less dense products such as starch powder to denser products such

as mineral powders. The pneumatic system empties the collection cup using a

powerful jet of compressed air. Wet or sticky product may not be suited for use

with PowderVision, although the optional Air Heater may overcome window

sticking issues. Please consult NDC’s Applications Department for advice and

recommendations.

Installation:The PowderVision device is fitted in a mounting ring inserted in a cut-out in the duct

and held in place by tightening the locking ring. The Series 710e Gauge fixes to

the PowderVision tube via its window flange. There is also an optional fast release

clamp ring. In ither case, the gauge must be independently supported (see manual

for details). The insertion depth and timing sequence for the cup are adjusted on

site to optimize sampling rates depending on the flow rate and characteristics of

the product to be measured. PowderVision is made from 316L stainless steel. The

sapphire viewing window is retained mechanically and sealed with a silicone o-ring.

Control:The Series 710e HMI is used to adjust the timing sequence of the PowderVision

system, and to synchronize the Series 710e Gauge’s measurements with the filling

and emptying of the cup. The timing sequence is adjusted according to product flow

rate. The operational sequence is as follows:

Stage 1. Discharge

- the airjet discharges product from the cup (or cup opens mechanically)

Stage 2. Refill

- the cup refills over a pre-configured time period

Stage 3. Measurement

- the Series 710e gauge measures over the pre-configured time period

Stage 4. Hold Reading

- the gauge reading is held at last reading while Stages 1. and 2. are repeated

Specifications and Requirements:Cut-out size for Mounting Ring: 125mm (Pneumatic Version)

Maximum insertion depth: 130mm (to the centre of the cup)

Power and Air Supply Specifications:Electrical supply: 80-264V, 50-60Hz

Clean regulated air: 70 psi, 5 Bar

Air consumption: dependent on cycle time

Series 710e Gauges:Any Series 710e Backscatter NIR Gauge (IP65 or IP67 versions) can be used with a

PowderVision, including MM710e (Food), CM710e (Industrial), PH710e (Pharma).
