As mobile network expansion moves ostensibly to emerging markets where solar
energy levels are more favorable, solar power appears ready to play an important role
in reducing the costs of cellular service delivery and ensuring a more reliable power
supply. The OEMs drive toward reducing base station power consumption, along withimprovements in photovoltaic cells, have meant that solar energy is now a very viable
solution for powering cellular base stations.
335,000 Cellular Base Stations to Include Solar Power by 2013

Solar power will first be used in conjunction with other primary energy sources such as
diesel or grid-based electricity, but will increasingly be seen as a primary source for
autonomous cell sites. The market for autonomous solar powered cell sites looks set to
grow from extremely modest levels today to over 40,000 renewable energy sites by theend of 2013. A further 295,000 base stations are expected to supplement on-grid
power usage with solar.

A short review about Power Supplies forTelecom Applications
Basically there are the following possibilities to supply energy to BTS (Basic
Telecommunication Stations) in remote areas:
The most economic possibility is to use renewable energy systems or
combined systems. Here we would like to introduce solar energy systems as
a reliable and cost efficient solution.

The most disadvantages of Diesel Aggregates are:
Dependence of fuel (world-wide increase of oil prices; limited resources
in future)
Transport to the sites (long distances and cost intensive transports) Storage of the fuel at site (safety problems - explosions, vandalism, etc.)
No unintended operation is possible (high personal cost)
High maintenance cost (oil, filters, etc.)
Limited life-time of Diesel motors (change of motors every two years) Pollution (noise, heat and dirt)
The most advantages of Solar Systems are:
Independence of oil, gas and utility gridMost economic operation (very low running costs)
Unintended operation (normally no operation personal is required)
Long lifetime (only the batteries must be changed every 5 8 years)
No pollution, no noise, no dirt

SUW 200 can be used in solarapplications to convert DC powerfrom solar modules or AC power fromgen-set into 48VDC. The basic task ofthe SUW 200 power supply system isto supply main telecom equipment(telecom exchanges, GSM base etc.)
with Uninterruptible DC power.

5 alarm digital inputs (high voltage, low voltage, fire alarm status, water level
status, intruder alarm), 4 analog inputs (battery voltage, load current, array current, solar insolation),
2 inputs for temperature measurement.

Assumptions: Interest rate = 6 % ; Lifetime of systems = 20 years ; operation in areas with high solar
irradiations (sunbelt ofearth) ; price increase of DIESEL fuel = 5% per anno;
Even below 20 USD cents for fuel a SOLAR powered system operates more economic
than DIESEL powered stations!
