Folding Hope: Create a Paper Crane

Get a piece of a4 Paper; Preferably, one with a goat.


Fold one corner of your paper over to the opposite side


Fold the remaining rectangle over to create a crease.


separate the rectangle from the rest of your paper.


Unfold your paper. Admire your goat.


Fold your paper along the crease you already created like this:


bring bottom right corner to top left corner. Crease.


Tilt your smaller triangle to be perpendicular to your table. Place your thumb inside the small triangle. Begin opening it up.


Open your small triangle and press it down to the table to create a square. (Bring the top tip of the triangle to the bottom right corner of the paper). Crease the edges.


Your pretty little folds should look like this:


Flip your paper over. (turn it over to the other side).


Take the bottom left corner of your triangle to open it up. Bring that corner to the bottom right corner on the table.


(You create a matching square front and back).


If you pick up your paper and tilt it one end should look like this:


Place your square sandwich on the table. Keep the open end to the right.


Take the top corner and lift it up. Hold that top corner.


Bring the top corner so that the top right edge meets the middle crease on your paper. Note where the tip of the square is (under my index finger).


Your fold-tastic fun should look like this:


Repeat the process on the bottom corner: Bring bottom tip of square to middle crease to line up bottom right edge at the crease.


Flip the paper over. Repeat! Bring top tip of square to line up with the middle crease.


Repeat! Bring the bottom tip of the square to line up with the crease. it will look like this:


Open up your folds to see your square again.


lift up the right corner and begin to open it up. Invert the creases you made. (See next slide).


Take the bottom tip and push it INSIDE until creases match up.


When you finish inverting the bottom it will look like this:


Take the top tip and repeat the inversion. push it in until all the creases line up.


Your finished fold inversions will look like this:


When you open up your funny looking quadrilateral it should create this diamond shape:


Fold it back and orient your pretty paper like this:


Flip your pretty paper over. We get to do this AGAIN!


Open up your folds


Open up your square


Take the top tip and invert your fold until the creases match up.


When you invert the fold your paper looks like this:


Take the bottom tip of your once upon a square and push that tip in until the paper inverts and creases match up.


Your paper should now look like this:


lift up the right tip of the quadrilateral.


When you lift the right tip open it all the way to the left to create a crease in the middle.


Your almost paper crane will look like this:


Flip it over and do it to the other side.


When you pick up your folds you should be able to see the wings of your crane.


Open up the space between your wings. Take the bottom most tip and start bringing it up above the wings.


Begin to push the inner crease in to create the neck of your crane. Push everything down to emphasize creases.


Make your crane’s head: bring your thumb about an inch down from the top of your fold. Push down the tip into the folded area.


Now you have a standing goat! I mean, crane. Do you want your crane to fly?


Flying Crane Bonus: Turn your crane so the head faces away from you. Open up the back side like so (the wings are on either side):


Lift up the bottom tip and bring it up to reach and almost touch the head of the crane.


Fold the opened area inwards. Wings are still on either side. Flip Your crane sideways. to see your flying crane with wings down.
