Arthur Rimbaud was born in October 20, 1854 in Charleville, Ardennes, in the Champaigne region of France. His father was Captain Frederic Rimbaud, a career soldier, and his mother was Marie Catherine Vitalie Cuif, a devout Catholic. When Arthur was six, Captain Rimbaud left his family, leaving Rimbaud and his siblings to be raised by their mother. His mother was very strict and pushed Rimbaud to excel in his studies, which he did. In 1869, he won several first prizes and in 1870, he published his first poem, “The Orphan’s New Year’s Gift.”

Shortly thereafter, Rimbaud obtained a literary mentor, Georges Izambard. Their relationship quickly became strained, however, as Rimbaud

ran away several times and eventually took on a provocative nonconforming lifestyle. Rimbaud believed this lifestyle would steel his creativity and for the next five years he wrote a majority of his profound works (although several were published later). After 1875, Rimbaud began to work more regularly and began his travels as a gunrunner in Africa, returning to France frequently. On November 10, 1891, Rimbaud died

at the age of 37. He was interred in his home of Charleville.

Although his time as a poet was brief, Rimbaud’s work greatly shaped the Symbolist movement and pre-empted what would be known as the Surrealist movement. In addition, he influenced several 20th century artists including• Jim Morrison• Allen Gingsburg• Pablo Picasso

The Blanquette de Limoux is a dry sparkling wine (brut) made up of mostly Mauzac, the traditional variety of grape in the Limoux vineyard. After the first fermentation, grape juice is added to induce the second fermentation process and give the wine its sparkling effect. The wine is then stored for another nine months before bottled.

The Riesling is an aromatic white grape originating from the Rhine region in Germany, but is also grown in other regions such as Alsace. The Alsace Riesling tends to be richer than the Rieslings made in Germany and owes its distinct style due to the sunny and dry shelter from the Vosges Mountains.

Meaning “little sweet one,” the Dolcetto grape is widely grown in the Piedmont region

of northwest Italy. The grape is said to have originated in the village of Dogliani with documentation dating back to the 16th century, although legend purports that the Dolcetto dates back even further. Despite its name, Dolcetto wines are almost always dry.

The Cabernet Franc is a black-skinned grape commonly grown in the Loire Valley whose sandy

clay soil provides the ideal growing conditions. The origins of the grape date to the 17th century and the wine it produced grew more popular during the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the taste is compared with Cabernet Sauvignon, this is because the Cabernet Sauvignon is a result of crossing Cabernet Franc with Sauvignon Blanc.

Malbec and Merlot are part of the six permitted varieties used in Bordeaux wine style. In this particular blend, the Malbec must make up at least 70% of the wine itself. Although the blend of Malbec and Merlot is thought to represent New World winemaking stylistically, it’s nothing new in the Cahors region in southwest France.

Porto, or port, is a fortified wine with roots in the Douro Valley in Portugal. This region is the third oldest wine region in the world, preceded by the Tokaj-Hegyalja region in Hungary (1730), and the Chianti region in Tuscany, Italy (1716). Although this particular brand does not require it, many ports should be decanted before serving as they are aged in their bottles and therefore unfiltered.

Rimbaud’s works can be characterized as exceptionally fresh, employing permanent universal themes. Rimbaud saw his poetry as a way to change life by transcending from poet to seer. The following highlights are just some of his more profound works.

Lettres du Voyant (1871)Letters of the Seer

Lettres du Voyant (commonly referred to as the Seer Letters) are a set of letters detailing Rimbaud’s philosophy on poetry. The first was written to his former literary mentor Georges Izambard on May 13, 1871. The second was sent just two days later, to contemporary poet Paul Demeny. These letters, although crass and pretentious, are heralded critically and considered to be part of the canonical texts of modern literary criticism.

Le Bateau Ivre (1871)The Drunken Boat

“And from then on I bathed in the Poem of the Sea, infused with the stars and lactescent,”-The Drunken Boat, st.6, line 21

The Drunken Boat is a 100-line poem written around September of 1871. The poem narrates the story of a boat whose crew was massacred and its adventures and visions thereafter. Many critics regard this poem as an extension of Rimbaud’s philosophy from the Seer Letters and praise its ability to illustrate his views without pretension.

Une Saison en Enfer (1873)A Season in Hell

A Season in Hell is a prose-poem written in several different parts. Unlike his other works, this is the only poem Rimbaud published himself. Many of the copies

still exist, but the original manuscript is lost. A Season in Hell paints an array of images and many critics describe the work as Surrealist.

Illuminations (1874)Illuminations

Illuminations is a collection of prose and poetry first published in 1886 in La Vogue, a Paris literary review. However, the poems were first written

by Rimbaud between 1873-1875. Illuminations stands out from Rimbaud’s other works with its influence from the English language (as Rimbaud was staying in England when he wrote most of the poems). English words can be found in several of the poems, and it is argued that the title itself is meant to be pronounced as it is in English but with a French accent.
