City Council Unanimously Supports Jordan School District Bond Proposal

On Tuesday, September 6, 2016 the South Jordan City Council unanimously approved resolution R2016-66 supporting the 2016 Jordan School District $245 million bond proposal. The bond will finance the construction of six (6) schools, including a middle school planned to be built in South Jordan. The resolution references that the District has some of the largest school enrollments in Utah including the two largest three-year high schools in the state. The Council reaffirmed its positive relationship with the District since entering into an interlocal agreement in July 2014. They further cited the extensive efforts made by the District to effectively utilize its resources, reduce building costs by 17% and include cities in their future planning. The City Council encourages each resident to examine the bond proposal carefully and visit www.jordanbond.org to learn more before voting.

Home Occupation Business LicensingMany residents of South Jordan find the venture of running a home based business very profitable and satisfying. A home occupation can satisfy the needs of a stay at home parent, a retired person, or someone who likes the convenience of making some extra income while working from home. However, there is a certain process which must be followed to make sure your home occupation is legal, safe and non-disruptive to your neighbors. South Jordan City defines a Home Occupation as “any business or income-producing activity conducted from a residential property. The home occupation provisions are intended to provide opportunities for minor in-home businesses which do not require the facilities or have the impacts of larger concerns.” Many types of businesses are allowed; however, please note, not all businesses types/activities are allowed as a home occupation. For additional information regarding the rules, restrictions or exemptions of business licensing, please read Chapter 5 and Chapter 17, Title 98 in our Municipal Code available on the City website or contact the Business Licensing Department at 801-446-HELP.

Fee Schedule UpdatesLast year, South Jordan City hired Zions Bank Public Finance to study South Jordan’s business license fee schedule. Prior to the study, each type of business had to pay the base fee plus an additional fee based on the number of full time and part time employees. Zions recommended that the City divide the business license fee into 2 parts, a base fee and a disproportionate fee. The base fee was determined by the cost incurred to administer the business license during the application and renewal process. In addition to the base fee, Zions proposed a disproportionate fee be charged based on the indirect costs incurred by the City for specific types of businesses. Zions determined certain categories of businesses required additional city services and follow-through, therefore a disproportionate fee was allocated to businesses based on those specific categories. If your business is categorized with a disproportionate fee, additional information will be provided during the renewal process.

For more information about a home occupation business license please visit: http://www.sjc.utah.gov/business-licenses/

Business License Facts-On average 40 new business license applications are received each month.

-In 1993 the South Jordan received 49 new business license applications compared to 468 in 2015.-On September 1, 2016 South Jordan reported 2280 active business licenses.

-Currently South Jordan has more home occupation business licenses than commercial/retail business licenses.
