2014 has started with a bang in our area. With Davis-Besse outage workers and ice fisherman populating the area, businesses that normally struggle during the winter months in our county are getting a pre-season boost. Davis-Besse outage workers are in the area because they have been assigned, but ice fisherman are coming to the area because of choice which is more indicative of the tourism yet to come to our attraction rich area.

“The bicentennial brought in an audience of first time visitors to our area in 2013,” said Larry Fletcher, Executive Director of Lake Erie Shores and Islands West. “People came because of the ships and a lot of work went into promoting the region as a whole. We are hopeful for the 2014 season and I think we have had a great start. The ice fishing in our area is getting great media attention right now.”

If people come to the lake to fish in the brutally cold winter because of the great fishing, just think of the people that are going to populate the area in the summer months.

Just because the tall ships have sailed out in 2013, doesn’t mean that the War of 1812 activities have halted. Perry’s Monument on Put-In-Bay has ongoing programming about the war that will stretch until 2015 which will celebrate the peace between Canada and the United States and the end of the war.

Another attraction to the area that is gaining momentum is the Biggest Week in Birding. The event, which stretches with activities down the shore of Lake Erie and through the parks of the area, takes place May 6-15 and brings people from

throughout the country to view the natural wonders and our feathery visitors we have in our region.

The Black Swamp Bird Observatory which is located at the entrance of Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and Magee Marsh Wildlife Area Bird Center all located on State Route 2 in Oak Harbor are prime coordinates for the Biggest Week in American Birding. The headquarters for the event is Maumee Bay Lodge and Conference Center located in nearby Maumee Bay State Park in Oregon.

Another staple in the community is the Walleye Festival. This year the Walleye Festival falls May 23-26. Rides, vendors, food and fun take over Waterworks Park over Memorial Day weekend for this annual event.

Speaking of rides and vendors, the Ottawa County Fair is July 14-20 and will be home to all kinds of fun; corn hole tournament, livestock sales, a demolition derby, live entertainment and tractor pulls.

The Liberty Aviation Museum in conjunction with Erie-Ottawa International Airport has blossomed into a great resource and attraction to the area as well. With a jam packed schedule events, this spot is sure to take off in 2014.

With Camp Perry matches, farmers markets, boating, fishing, car shows, BBQs and Lakeside Chautauqua events, we are in for a fun filled, busy season!

For more information about events throughout Ottawa County or the area visit www.shoresandislands.com for an ongoing calendar of events and information about any attraction in the area for natives or visitors.

National Junior Reserve Officer Corps championships and the CMP’s own National Air Rifle Championships.

The Anderson Center features electronic targets - which means no one needs to go

Thanks to area residents and thousands of Americans who support the efforts of the Cvilian Marksmanship Program through its sales and marksmanship programs, the organization is proud to announce a major expansion to its airgun marksmanship center is now complete.

The Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center, as it is now known, has been greatly expanded, providing users greater space to meet, compete and relax during events and public functions.

Anderson, the Director Emeritus of the CMP and resident of Oak Harbor, retired in 2010. He is the holder of two Olympic gold medals, multiple national and world championship rifle marksmanship titles and six world records. His accomplishments and CMP legacy will remain intact indefinitely.

The competition center is home to public marksmanship activities, 4-H Club practice and matches, Junior Olympics Shooting,

CMP Continues to GrowMarksmanship Program significantly expands its airgun center at Camp Perry

forward of the firing line to score or replace targets. During events, all scoring appears on monitors at each firing point and also on 80” television monitors located throughout the range for spectator view.

The new expansion includes a new entrance

leading to a reception and check-in desk, a retail shop, a large common area for eating and relaxation and a pair of large classrooms. Competitor changing rooms and significantly larger restrooms were added to the facility.

The center’s classrooms and common area will be made available to the

public for use by civic groups and special events. The CMP will be offering the space for team-building events for businesses and community groups using both the airgun range and common areas if they wish.

Promoting Firearm Safety and Marksmanship Since 1903Camp Perry Training Site, Port Clinton (419)-635-2141 www.TheCMP.org

On public marksmanship nights, the CMP provides entry-level sporter air rifles, shooting mats, safety glasses and instruction for a fee of $2 for juniors and $5 for adults. Boxes of 500 pellets are available to purchase for $7.50.

Across the nation last year more than 15,000 people received firearm safety instruction and participated in CMP-sanctioned competitions through our 5,000-plus affiliated clubs and onsite programs.

Thanks to qualified range safety officers and fellow shooters who serve as a second set of eyes, participants can enjoy their shooting experience at CMP events in a constructive, stress-free environment.

“You can only handle firearms or participate in matches after a safety briefing, and airguns must be handled in a safe manner, with no exceptions,” says CMP Programs General Manager, Christie Sewell.

Getting StartedBecause the fundamentals of all marks-

manship are similar, new shooters can learn the basics of target shooting with an airgun supported on a rest. When ready, the shooter can advance to three-position shooting in prone, sitting or kneeling and standing positions.

Our competitions are safety-driven and shooter-friendly. We award achievement medals, plaques and trophies at every event. Our shooters range from 10 years on up!

Bring the family out and join us fora safe and rewarding experience!

The Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center has been greatly expanded to serve the needs of CMP event participants and the Ottawa County community. The center will eventually be open for use by civic groups and area businesses for meetings.

The center’s versatile open common area has been designed for relaxation, presentations and award ceremonies to name a few.
