IT IS PÉCS !

ABOUT THE REGION AND THE UNIVERSITY

Pécs is the fi fth largest town in Hungary, with a population of around 180,000. Lying in the south of Transdanubia, close to the border with Croatia, it has a mild, almost Mediterranean climate. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, and the name of the old Roman town, “Sopianae” is still found in the names of institutions and products.

Pictures about the atmosphere and spirit of the city can be found at architecture.www.pte.hu/about_us/

The University of Pécs is the biggest higher education institute in our region, and one of the oldest in Europe: it was established 650 years ago in 1367. With its ten faculties, the University of Pécs plays a signifi cant role in Hungarian higher education. The University off ers a broad range of training and degree programmes, ensuring high-level knowledge-transfer and research. We have internationally recognised programs, and over 25,000 currently enrolled students including about 2,000 foreign students.

ARCHITECTURE INSTITUTE MISSION AND UNIQUE QUALITIES6 |

ARCHITECTURE INSTITUTE MISSION AND UNIQUE QUALITIES

The Architecture programs are off ered by the Architecture Institute of the Faculty of Engineering. The Institute comprises the Department of Energy Design, the Department of Building Constructions, the Department of Architectural Design, the Department of Urbanism, the Department of Interior and Environmental Design and the Department of Architecture and Visual Studies. All courses of the Architecture programs are conducted in English. Our mission is not only to impart knowledge to students on structures, materials or planning, but also to open their eyes to key issues like interdisciplinarity, solidarity, sustainability, high-design, theoretical thinking and loyalty to the built environment.

Our strength lies in our teaching methods; fi rst-rate teaching in small classes combined with individual student counselling – like an architectural manufactory in natural scale. Most of the courses are taught in small groups and the best students are invited by lecturers to take part in their projects so that they can gain practical experience. The school uses teaching methods similar to those of the worldwide known Bauhaus School: looking for connections with practical life, crafts and liberal arts. Bauhaus masters born in Pécs include Marcell Breuer, Farkas Molnár and Alfréd Forbát.

This programme trains students to apply their complex knowledge in the areas of architecture and urban planning, as well as in the multi-faceted fi eld of environment formation in general (architectural design, town and country planning, preservation of built heritage, structural design, construction work, management and administration tasks, consulting with authorities, teaching, etc.)We understand contemporary architecture. We know the architecture of the past. We work with the architects of the future. We believe in recycling! We appreciate the natural environment!

WE TEACH ARCHITECTURE!

tutors (the latter also being in charge of supervising their work). Within the professional fi eld of architecture, students acquire individual expertise in a specifi c fi eld and can apply for admission to the DLA&PhD degree programme based on their specialization.

The DLA&PhD programme operates within the framework of an accredited doctoral school at the institute. During the fi rst fi ve-six semesters students are provided with the groundwork in both human artistic and real engineering fi elds, and during the remaining semesters they can acquire special knowledge closely related to their qualifi cation - in this phase creative work and its fi nal result, the completed work is dominant. The fi nal complex design project and the diploma design project are a summary, a concentration of their studies and the fi nal assessment of their acquired knowledge.

BREUER MARCELL DOCTORAL SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

The courses refl ect the primary objective of the doctoral programmes, namely the facilitation of the most important tasks of doctoral candidates: individual creative or research work through the requirement for DLA students to complete a Doctoral Project and for PhD students to present a Scientifi c Dissertation.

In addition to the ‚ex catedra’ lecture component, the curriculum also covers practical training in the fi elds of research, design studio and offi ce work, primarily conducted in workshops of highly qualifi ed and generally acclaimed masters. As part of their workshop experience, doctoral candidates have the opportunity to be involved in the social analyses and planning in various projects. In the implementation phase of such projects they can also obtain experience in participating in professional discussions and site supervision.

Our doctoral candidates are also off ered the opportunity to do their planning practice at researchworkshops and ateliers of other institutions, both in Hun-gary and abroad. Approvals for candidates to perform their planning practice outside the framework of our institution are issued by the Council of the Doctoral School.

16 |

The DLA in Architecture programme of the Doctoral School covers architecture and urban architecture programmes dealing with various aspects of planning (architecture of social spaces, architectural planning and design, production environment planning, residential environment planning, settlement planning). However, these fi elds are not strictly tied to specifi c topics or building types, but are more closely related to the professional and educational expertise and experience of the specifi c teachers and supervisors of the Doctoral School.

Our intention is to provide our students with a historical perspective of our heritage, our responsibility towards the environment, and a coherent system of environmental and modern architectural aspects. It is in view of this that special emphasis is laid in the curriculum of our school on the individual programme of activity of our doctoral candidates, which is built on the combination of creative artistic-technical activities and scientifi c research in a chosen fi eld, in accordance with the specifi c feature of architecture being a combination of arts

When the PhD in Architectural Engineering programme of the Doctoral School was developed we drew on experience of other Hungarian Doctoral Schools and that of the existing DLA Doctoral School. The programme covers aspects of past and modern building materials science, engineering structures and building frames.

Furthermore, it also focuses on areas closely related to the programme’s priorities, such as environmental planning, settlement planning and energy design. In view of the specifi c features of the discipline and the wide range of subjects – that is, the interdisciplinary nature - of the various fi elds of research, the course curriculum lays special emphasis on ensuring that doctoral candidates gain the necessary knowledge and competence while also catering to their individual research topics. The prime objective of the Training Programme is to assist doctoral candidates of the school in preparing a dissertation of high standard and in complying with the requirements of a doctoral degree.

Multi-disciplinary Projects

Pollack ExpoThis annual event has been organised since 2007 and is held at the Pécs Expo Centre in February or March. It hosts 150-200 exhibitors, 5-6000 visitors, specialist lectures, a job fair, the Baranya Open and the robot programming competition.

PhD – DLA symposiumThere is a tradition that doctoral students present their research topics and results at an international conference. For this purpose, the International PhD and DLA Symposium has been held annually for 11 years and over the two days of the symposium an esti-mated 160 presentations are delivered in four diff erent sections. The chairmen of each section are internationally renowned professors from Hungary and abroad.

Pollack PeriodicaThe Faculty’s own scientifi c journal is called the ‘Pollack Periodica, an International Journal for Engineering and Information Sciences’ published by the Akadémiai Kiadó. Since 2006, nine volumes have been published containing more than 200 scientifi c articles. 60% of these articles were written on the subject of information technology, in fact, this is the only English language journal in Hungary that has information science in its title.
