    What Matters When Considering Relocating?

    1

    2

    3

    Something Familiar and Comfortable

    Sameness

People have become accustomed to the amenities, activities and surroundings they experience every day. Whimoving implies experiencing new things, when relocating, we still want to be able to enjoy a life or wthat were used to . We want to be able to have surroundings that match what make us comfortable and whneed to survivewhether thats a Starbucks or a similar city size, similar weather or a similar commute.

Upward Potential and MobilityPeople want to move to have the chance at upward mobility and to reap the benets that come with moving toplacewhether thats economic benets of a higher salary, more take home pay, a nicer house or even just quof life factors like being closer to family and friends, having better schools for my kids, etc. We move tupward growthboth rationally and emotionallyso locations that can provide this are more appealing.

Can I Imagine a Life Here?Once a location meets the sameness and upward mobility needs, people want to know if they can imagine litherenot just existing there. This speaks to job seekers ultimate desire for quality of life, which includes enactivities, having experiences, meeting people, etc., as well as the foundational things from sameness andupward mobility. Can I live a life thats worth living here and a life that seems full?

When considering places to relocate, job seekers are looking for clues that a location can meet their three overarchingneeds, which stretches across three main criteria:

To determine if SD perceptions would change after participants knew more about South Dakota, they were shown aseries of statements about the state. They were not directed to whether these statements were true or false but wereasked to describe what their impression was after hearing the trait and then to order it 1-5 on how appealing it was to

them. Traits were randomized for each group to prevent order bias.
