Focus Group Analysis:

The participants were first asked questions based on their favourite artist and what was admirable about their style. This was then followed by them being shown a music video to Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea’s music video to ‘One Less Problem’. Following on from this they were asked about what attracted them towards buying a magazine.

Oliwia: Her favourite artist from the collage was Taylor Swift, and she likes how Swift is unique and slightly different to other artists. After watching the music video she liked that it was slightly ‘retro’ and ‘60’s themed’ which involves a lot of bright colours, also the clothes and style which are very feminine and fun. She admires that it was different to how a regular pop video is compose. Her favourite pop artist is Ed Sheeran. What most attracted her to buy magazines is the artist on the cover and prefers the colours to be bright and eye catching. Blue, pink and white would be her preferable choice of colour on the front cover of a magazine.

Emma: Her favourite artist from the collage shown was Demi Lovato, because she is not a typical pop singer, since she has her own unique style. Lovato is a slightly more daring and rebellious pop artist which she admires which is slightly unconventional in the pop genre which she admires. Emma liked the fashion used in the music video and the colours. Her favourite pop artists are Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift. What most attracts her to buy magazines are the articles inside.

Colette: Her favourite artist shown in the collage was Jessie J because she writes her own music, and her songs have a meaning behind them and are relatable which she felt was unique for pop artists. In the music video she liked the effect of monochrome as it was different and retro. She didn’t like Iggy Azalea’s hair in the video as it was ‘too extreme’. She liked the colours used in video whch were mainly pink, black and white. Her favourite pop artist is Ed Sheeran, and what most attracts her to buy the magazine is the artist on the front cover and the stories inside. If the story is interesting she said that the colour scheme wouldn’t affect her.

Overall from this focus group I learnt that these 14 year old girls were interested in pop artists with a unique style to others, and were not completely typical pop artists. They liked musicians that had some deeper meaning to their lyrics, and wrote from personal experience as a way of advising girls. In general they were not too bothered about colour scheme but more about content and cover artists, but if asked to make a choice on a preferable colour scheme it would be something bright and colourful. They all liked the pop artist Ed Sheeran who sings songs which are catchy yet have a meaning behind them from personal experience, and they like how his style is unique in that it is quite casual and down to earth. This is shown through the way he wears trainers, jeans and jackets to his concerts. From these results I will make sure that the pop artist I decide to interview has a down to earth personality, and has her own unique style within the genre. The colour scheme which I use will be bold and attention grabbing as it appears to be preferable among the group. Below is an image of my participants taking part in my focus group:
