A reminder our School Board meets next Thursday 23 May at 5.30pm in the staff room. You are always more than welcome to come and observe our meetings and see the wonderful work the Board undertake as they oversee the governance of the school. The P&C also meets after the Board at 7.30pm and this is a great way to meet families and hear about the ways in which the school is being supported through the excellent fundraising efforts. As the weather starts to cool down, it is the season for coughs, colds and flus. We urge you to keep sick children at home, even if they really want to come to school! We love their enthusiasm but we don’t love their germs. Our teachers are certainly susceptible to this and then need to take time away from their class when they get sick which ultimately impacts on all the children. We also have some students here with lower immune systems than others and as we know the adverse impact colds and flus can have, it is better for our whole school community to keep your sick child at home. I hope you are all feeling the positivity around our school community. I have spoken with lots of parents who have great news to share with us about how their child is going at school and our staff who continue to work hard and engage students with their learning. As always, if you are finding that your school experience isn’t so positive or you ever have any queries, concerns or ideas – please feel free to come and see me. I am always keen to improve our school every day and your genuine feedback helps me to do this. I appreciate the openness that our community has in sharing different points of view and encourage you to be a part of these ongoing conversations. See you in the playground.

Honour Board

Protective Behaviours

As part of our Health and Physical Education program this term we will be teaching “Protective Behaviours: Establishing skills for life” from Kindy to Year 6. This program promotes living skills and personal safety. The aim is to strengthen the resilience of children as they grow and develop. This program will be taught in classrooms with the classroom teacher who knows the students best. The program follows two main themes:

1. We all have the right to feel safe at all times

2. We can talk with someone about anything no matter what

The program works sequentially from K-6 and each year builds on the developmental skills of students. The program is part of the curriculum that is based on a skills-based philosophy where these skills can be taught as stand-alone topics or integrated throughout other curriculum areas. Students will work on the following concepts:

Honour Board

Personal Space

Assertiveness Students will explore: Helpful and positive thinking – understanding links between thoughts/feelings/behaviour. Understanding emotions – being aware of a range of feelings, regulating their own emotions and reading others’ emotions. Resourcefulness – problem predicting and problem solving, decision making, goal setting and persistence. Self-understanding – knowing their own values and how to stand up for them and self-reflection. Teaching protective Behaviours promotes the development of the necessary life skills to predict, assess and act in both safe and unsafe situations. Enhancing safety and minimising harm is the focus of teaching Protective Behaviours. We encourage you to talk with your child about what they are learning in class and speak with your classroom teacher if you have any questions.

Student Services

The student services team work together to look at individual students and decide on the best pathway to assist that student to have the best outcomes academically, socially or emotionally. Sandra Martin, Learning Support Coordinator, oversees the referral of students from teachers and parents. For a child to be seen formally by student services, parent consent must be given. Students are discussed by the team and ‘triaged’ to determine what service will suit them best. Sheldyn Garnaut, Educational Psychologist, attends to students who are at educational risk and works with teachers, parents and the students to put in place plans that will assist the student in the classroom. She also works with teachers to implement strategies that may benefit the student. Dom Casci, School Chaplain, meets with students who may want to talk about issues that are concerning them. She is a listening ear for students facing trauma in their family and for parents who want to talk through any concerns. Dom is trained to facilitate whole class and group programs in friendship and grief. Although she comes under the umbrella of YouthCARE, there is no religious content when Dom deals with students. The student services team therefore, offer a holistic approach in the way we address the needs of all our students which allows teachers to ensure students are feeling safe and secure at school. Ultimately this means students have a better chance of achieving in the classroom. Students require a new referral each year to access the student service team.

Night of Eminence

On Wednesday May 22 (Week 4), the Extension students will be sharing a Night of Eminence with the school community from 5.30pm-7pm in the undercover area. The community is invited to come and take a look at over 50 stalls sharing information about a range of eminent people who have made interesting and incredible contributions to the world. The students have spent ten weeks researching and learning about an eminent person of their choice and they are very keen to share what they have learned with you. It would be lovely to see the whole community come and support the learning of the students and we look forward to seeing you there!

Dogs

A reminder that dogs are not allowed on the school site, whether they are on a leash or not and regardless of size. This week some of our junior primary students walked through dog poo in the playground, which was distressing for them and impacted on their school day. Under the Education Act dogs are not allowed on site unless they are a therapy or assistance dog.

Traffic Management Committee News

The Traffic Management Committee (TMC) would like to thank everyone who participated in the traffic survey last year and attended the TMC workshop in Term 1 this year. The survey indicated that 74% of the school community respondents had experienced unsafe or negative road behaviours and this was reiterated in the workshop. One of the prominent themes that derived from both forums was “education” to the school community, on such topics as; how to use “Kiss N Drive,” parking, and child and community safety.

Please refer to the adjacent photo for how to use Kiss N Drive. Please read and pass on to all family members/care givers utilising this service and please remember to follow the road rules and parking signs. No one is to park in the no standing zone in front of the Centenary Gates on Third Avenue. The TMC will continue to provide information to the school community through the MLPS fortnightly newsletter. If there are any traffic issues/ community promotion you would like us to pass onto the committee, then please contact Neil, Sharnie, John and Dan via the P&C email address, [email protected] .

In the words of King Julian, “I like to move it, move it” in Kiss n Drive 👍😎

Term 2 Fundraiser Appeal – Student Leadership

Socks in The City Appeal Winter Socks for The Homeless in Perth

Millions of homeless people suffer from trench foot, a disease that is caused from cold, wet and dirty conditions. Trench foot could be prevented if the homeless got socks as socks would keep the feet warm and dry. Mount Lawley Primary school is going to host their first Socks In The City Fundraiser! During Weeks 3 to 7, baskets will be placed in the front office for donations. Socks must be clean and preferably dark coloured (e.g. black, brown etc.). There are 3 simple steps to help change someone’s life:

Step 1: Look through your sock drawer to see if there are any new or unworn socks. Take them to school and put them in the basket. Step 2: Buy a warm pair of socks and place them in the basket marked “We Want Socks!” – Term 2 Appeal Step 3: Encourage your friends, family and neighbours to do the same!

Thank you for your assistance, Ashley, Prezley, Mili and David Student Leaders

L’Angolo d’Italia (The Italian Corner)

Buongiorno a tutti and welcome back to the Italian Corner. Already this term there have had some amazing things happening within our school, local community and Australia wide that different students have been involved with at various levels. Firstly, thank you to all those students from years 3 – 6 who put entries forward to be part of the 2019 Italian Festival Schools Competition being run by ITALO (Italo-Australian Welfare & Cultural Centre). This was a voluntary competition as students needed to complete their entry over the school holiday break. Each year level had a different entry requirement based around the theme of Leonardo Da Vinci. Year 3s were writing about themselves as

Mona Lisa, Year 4s created a comic strip “A Day in the Life of Da Vinci”, Year 5s were writing using Da Vinci’s mirror technique and Year 6s made a replica of a Da Vinci invention. Secondly, Mount Lawley was lucky enough to be accepted as part of a national trial being run by Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA). 300 schools were chosen Australia wide and we are 1 of only 69 schools chosen from Western Australia. The trial is being rolled out progressively and this year it involves our Pre-Primary students. The program integrates IT with the WA Languages Curriculum. The students had their first try of the program and it was met with great enthusiasm and excitement. A presto! Signora Ashkenazy
