FOCUS AREA OBJECTIVE

o Primary objective:“To maintain and restore both environmental and economic value to grasslands, while preserving their social and cultural functions globally”.

Page 3: Focus Area 2 Restoring value to Grasslands

Restoring value of grasslands, how?

o Grow our global understanding and identify shared views

o Design transition pathways to the future

o Create a global learning and innovation environment built from on the ground experiences that will inform both local and global action, especially through comparative analysis

o Integrate production, environment, economic, social and cultural well being, and collective action in grassland system assessment

Jean
In my understanding, this point is very important due to the weight of this level of decisions and actions in all the livestock farming societies, from Sahel to Tibetan Plateau, from Alps to Southern Patagonia and from Kiwi land to Western Canada, including the Great Lakes area where you will present.n In the same way, the current transition from Public Policies (more top-down) to collective action (more bottom-up) may ben is one of the more shared drivers of livestock farming systems in the global world.

FA2 Conceptual Framework : Restoring value to grassland Multiscale and participative approach

What are the valuesof Grasslands for

stakeholders?- Economics- Ecological- Social / Cultural

How to assess the valuesof Grasslands?

- Methods?- Who?

Role of Grasslands in

local development?- Diagnosis- Indicators

Improving value of Grasslands through innovation

- Policy practice and strategy- Technical practice- Local stakeholder practice

Tangible outputs

o Global lessons related to monitoring and managing progress towards sustainable grassland systems

o Identification of practices that will enable desired change

o Evidence based messages about the value

of grasslands for use in dialogue

Page 6: Focus Area 2 Restoring value to Grasslands

Progress to date Consult and Network

Collection, collation and sharing of existing data, info & experienceso Set up a WEB portal that is currently being used

as an inventory of information on grassland values. We plan to expand it’s functionality and build a workspace within the portal.

o Initiated a stock take of government/sector policies related to grassland management

Page 7: Focus Area 2 Restoring value to Grasslands

Progress to date Consult and Network

o Building networks while participating in a series of Grassland related meetings and conferences:

• 4th Conference SAADC in China (July 2013)

• European Association for Animal Production meeting held in Nantes (August 2013) "LFS innovations for local/rural development“

• 22nd International Grasslands Congress in Sydney (Sept 2013)

• APESS workshop in Cameroon (Nov 2013)

Progress to date Analyze and Inform

o Proposal for NAMA-based initiative has been drafted & with workshop planned for early 2014

o Global soil C sequestration assessment for grasslands completed (ID global hot spots)

o Develop, evaluate and compare affordable MRV (measurement, reporting and verification) methods• Sustainable grazing management C accounting

methodology

o Comparative analysis of mental models 15 grassland sites throughout the world

o Develop/adopt accounting mechanisms/indictors to value grasslands

Diversity, context

Page 10: Focus Area 2 Restoring value to Grasslands

Progress to date Pilot sites

Development of an inventory of global pilot sites to:o Undertake a global comparative description  o Describe the different values and measures for

grassland held by stakeholders.

o Describe the contribution of livestock farming to sustainable development

o Develop tools and processes for multi

stakeholders to assess and explore impacts of multiple drivers on future grassland systems

Page 11: Focus Area 2 Restoring value to Grasslands

Progress to date Pilot Sites

Identify new pilot projects:o Fill in the gaps of the current configuration of

pilot sites to provide diversity of approaches  o Provide evidence and example of how grassland

values can be restored and enhanced in practice

o Test innovation and practice change

Page 12: Focus Area 2 Restoring value to Grasslands

This Meeting

o Building on progress:• What priorities from pilot sites to inform

Global lessons e.g. testing innovation; topics for synthesis

• How to build on collaborative initiatives

• Additionality from participation in GAA, what is it and how do we capture it?

• Where are the quick wins?

• Preparation of next FA2 meeting
