The leading independent name in the sale and hire of modular and relocatable buildings in the UK

To expand school facilities quickly and cost-effectively LEA’s are turning

increasingly to modular construction. The King’s School in Ottery St Mary is

just such a case. Its new two-storey building was delivered over four days, which

is fast for a 723 square metre, 15 room building.

The school’s decision to use modular construction was influenced by two factors.

1. Less disruption on site. The school did not want lorries passing through the front

gates of the school at any time, so delivery was by craning the modules into position

from the school’s coach park. 2. Cost. A modular building is highly competitive in

price when compared to conventional construction.

Internal and external finishing work took just 20 weeks. The new building houses the

expanding geography department, the 6th Form Centre and IT room.

under way and Carillion has again hired AVflex site offices from Wernick

Hire. Senior staff at the site have stated that the AVflex is, “the finest

temporary site accommodation we have ever worked in.”

The two-storey 14-bay secure modular building is finished in Carillion’s

corporate colour scheme, but it is the spacious open-plan interior that has

really impressed senior staff.

The ground floor is laid out as a

9.6m x 3.6m meeting room, an

This significant acquisition is the latest Wernick

Hire key purchase. To Wernick Hire’s fleet of more

than 20,000 units, distributed nationwide across 28

Depots, has been added Rollalong’s 4000 units and

1800 clients. The two companies’ combined expertise

and experienced staff remain dedicated to supplying a

one-stop shop for a wide variety of accommodation

requirements. Rollalong’s event hire operations have

also been acquired giving Wernick Event Hire a depot in each of three

key locations – London, Birmingham and Winchester.

Chief Executive David Wernick stated, “This major

investment has further strengthened the trading

position of our core business throughout Britain.

We are looking forward to continuing a close

working relationship with both our new and

Seven police forces have bought or hired Wernick

Buildings’ PCflex™ modular custody cells since they

became available in 2009, generating great interest

amongst senior police officers in other forces. Inspector

Colin Christie, the Inspector of Custody Strategy Group,

Grampian Police said of his PCflex™ building, “I firmly

believe this is the way forward for all custody needs.

This facility is the best in our force and I strongly believe

may be the best in Scotland”

The PCflex™ system meets all Home Office ‘Safer Detention’

standards and can be supplied on hire, as a permanent

extension, or as a complete new custody suite. The Cumbria

Constabulary hired an eight cell PCflex™ system as a disaster

relief solution after the Workington Police station was

engulfed by flood water. The new custody suite was

delivered and up and running in five days.

Blackpool’s flood defence scheme is being

promoted as one of the best ways to prepare

against the threat of natural disasters in the UK.

Birse civils were tasked with improvements to 400

metres of existing promenade sea defence.

The site offices for this project were two Wernick

Hire AVflex™ secure modular buildings positioned

in front of the resort’s Grand Metropole Hotel.

Special requirements for the contract were seven

three tonne concrete blocks to be attached to the

buildings. These would protect against exceptionally

high winds and the danger of the site offices floating

away in a flood before the new scheme is completed!

A two-storey 44 bed isolation ward completed in the

miracle time of 26 weeks is up and running at Warwick

Hospital. The tender was won by Wernick Buildings on

price and a guarantee to deliver the building to an

exceptionally tight deadline.

With the Swine Flu pandemic in mind, the 72-bay, £3.4m

modular building is equipped throughout as an infection

controlled isolation wing with passive infra-red (PIR)

controlled lighting, taps, toilets and door operation.

All ward areas are also equipped with medical gases and

a filtered ventilation system. The building’s mechanical

systems are controlled by a state-of-the art computerised

management system. John Stevens the estates manager at

Warwick Hospital commented, “My colleagues and I were

very impressed at the speed and build quality achieved on

this complex project within the confines of a working hospital.

Modular building ticks all the boxes as far as we are concerned”.

Just like people, every company

or organization has its own

identity and personality.

The Wernick Group of Companies

is no exception, possessing five

corporate logos and six brand logos.

It is vitally important that where these

are used they are applied consistently.

To this end, the Wernick Executive

Board commissioned the production

of a Corporate Identity publication.

Our clients will see the new logo styles

gradually being applied throughout

our companies and products.

Wernick employees can refer to

the publication on the Company

Information Intranet.

With the expansion of pre-school provision Ermington Primary

School in Devon required extra space rapidly.

NPS South West, the property design and construction company was

commissioned to provide the new building. Cost-effectiveness was top

priority as was a tight delivery schedule.

Keith Stone, NPS’s surveyor approached Wernick Buildings, who

converted his specific design requirements into a factory built reality.

Keith commented that, “Ermington village is in a conservation area, so

my design had to be sensitive to the surroundings. I chose modular

construction because I have used it very successfully before. It’s

fast, cost-effective and can be adapted to just about any educational

design concept – it’s limited only by the designer’s imagination.”

The modular building was delivered and craned-in in one day; finishing

work took eight weeks. The building’s natural stone and Siberian Larch

exterior is complimented by a natural slate roof.

Ten weeks from start to finish, that’s how

long Wernick Buildings were on site at Gosford

Park Sure Start Centre in Coventry.

The building was delivered in just one day with internal

and external finishing work occupying the remaining time.

A brick skin and pitched tiled roof completed the

external finish of the building and under-floor central

heating and paint-finished tape and fill plasterboard

walls were used in the high specification interior.

Facilities at the centre include a play room, a community

room and offices for staff based at the centre. A similar

traditionally built structure would have taken around 21

weeks to complete.

The new performing arts

facilities for the The Sir Henry

Floyd Grammar School in Aylesbury

includes two full size dance studios and a practice

room. All have four metre high ceilings, sprung flooring and

ceiling mounted, flush fitted radiant heat panels.

The school has specialist status in performing arts. The recent building

programme at the school also delivered new 6th form accommodation. Both

developments were design and build projects supplied by Wernick Buildings.

A stipulation of their local authority meant that Portico Kindergarten’s

latest building had to be modular in construction. So the client decided

to explore the possibility of obtaining a refurbished building.

Refurbishment specialists PK Accommodation was able to meet Portico’s

precise requirements and director Nicole Politis was very complimentary

about their new-look premises and the service she received - “The staff

at PK were very efficient from start to finish and our good-as-new

accommodation meets my exact specifications.”

The totally refurbished modular building has separate day rooms for

the three age groups the kindergarten accommodates, plus a kitchen,

staff room, office, stock room and toilets.

Refurbished building gets thumbs-up

When fire destroyed four classrooms at Cowbridge Comprehensive School Wernick Hire

moved rapidly to provide replacement accommodation. The ruined classrooms housed

the food technology, design technology, textiles and IT departments. The rooms were all

fitted with expensive equipment and much of this had also been lost in the fire.

Replacement modular classrooms from Wernick were completed in just 31 days from the

outbreak of the fire.

“This rapid turn-round was a big achievement”, said school systems project officer

John Werrett. “We went from a pile of charred remains to four

fully equipped classrooms in five weeks. This all required

a high level of co-operation and flexibility between

our school staff and Wernick Hire.”
