REGION II TRACK AND FIELD MEET
1970
Welcome to this year's Region II meet, the qualifying competition
to determine the representatives to the Central Coast Section Track
and Field meet. For the first time, the Santa Clara Valley Athletic
League and the South Peninsula Athletic League combine to send repre
sentatives on; the SCVAL sends seven competitors, while the SPAL
sends 5. The top five competitors today will then advance and vie for
the 1970 CCS Championship.
Athletes and spectators alike will witness track and field at its finest
as both leagues send superlative competitors who are highly ranked
in Northern California as well as in the state and nation.
In the discus, Los Altos' Chris Adams has thrown 201'- the best in the
country this year. Scott Hovey's (Homestead) 184'1" and the many
170' throws of Waller (Homestead), Tarabonovic (Fremont), Bowen (Sunnyvale),
and Brown (Cupertino) make today the finest discus competition in the
entire country.
The 120 high hurdles promises to be a highly competitive race between
the two leagues. The SCVAL will be represented by two former leaders
in this event: Miller of Homestead (14.8) and Vic Brooks of Los Altos
(14.6). The SPAL will counter with the Gunn arsenal of Eshleman, the
current standard setter and league champion at 14.5 and Bagshaw at 14.6.
Additional talent will come from Davis of San Carlos (14.8)
The 880 will see the dynamic duo of Brown and Davis of Los Altos push them
selves to better and better times. At the league finals, Rick Brown won
in 1:51.7 for a new SCVAL record and Larry Davis finished second in
1:53.3. Verrette of Awalt with 1:54.1 and Gaesser of Homestead with a
155.5 will supply additional competition.
The mile shapes up to be one of the most competitive races with seven men
within striking distance. The edge goes to Awalt's junior Dave Chamness
with his 4:15.7 league victory. Lawson of San Carlos (4:25) and Schloss
of Menlo-Atherton (4:30) 100m as the biggest threats. Watch, also, the
Frosh-Soph mile as three talented youngsters battle to the line. Top
time is Chris Berka of Los Altos (4:27), but right on his heels will
be Miller of Carlmont (4:28.8) and Chamness of Awalt (4:31)
The two mile appears to be a two man race between Templeman of Carlmont
(9:33) and Randy Stahl of Homestead (9:25.6). Stahl's teammates
Marshall (9:39.9) and Remark (9:46.7), and Wells of Woodside (9:43) will
make things interesting.
Prepare for an exciting 440 while six men having been below 50 seconds vie
for the five qualifying spots. Odds on favorite will be Los Altos' Rick
Brown who ran 47.3 last week (best time in the state). Battling for
the other spots will be Jim Andrew (Los Altos), John Kessel (Awalt)
and Larry Davis (Los Altos) all of whom ran 48.6 last week. Other strong
competitors will be Vanderhurst of Lynbrook, Paul of Gunn, and Shirley
of Ravenswood.
In the 180 low hurdles, former state meet competitor Julian Lucas (Gunn)
looms as the man to beat. His 18.9 clocking in the SPAL Finals ranks him
as the best in Northern California. Most of his competition will come
from his own league.
Other competitors to watch should be Cupertino's premiere sprinter, Jeff
Fowler (9.8 in the 100 and 21.9 in the 220): Bosch and May, Sequoia's
two 6'6" high jumpers: Olson and Ciglia, the 14' pole vaulters from
Homestead: and Cupertino's Craig Conway in the long jump and the triple
jump.
Once again, welcome to the Region II meet. I know you will enjoy these
fine athletes and the tremendous competition. May you all root for a
winner •••
