The BSCN Program and Me

1. Why are you enrolled in FN 10?I am currently enrolled in FN 10 because as a Community Nutrition major, it is intended to give me an overview of what I will be studying for the years to come and to show me what roles in the community I will be responsible to take over one day. Ideally this course will show me the essence of my program, and it will prepare me for the higher level subjects I will be taking for it.2. Was BSCN your first choice? If YES, what made you decide to take it? If NO, what course was your first course? Why?BSCN was not my first choice and it was honestly because during my fourth year in high school I particularly did not know what I wanted to become and what field I wanted to pursue. I chose courses that were totally different from one another. In each school I applied, I chose an engineering course, a science course and a management course. In my application for UP Diliman, I applied for BS Business Administration and BS Psychology. I chose these courses based on my other family members courses, and the fact that they have a broad scope of career paths that I may eventually take up after I finish the program. 3. What made you eventually take up BSCN?There are three main reasons I decided to take up BSCN. The first one is because I am an athlete, and nutrition is very closely knit with the lifestyle athletes must uphold. As someone really conscious about what I intake I saw it fit that I choose this course. Second, is how health and fitness is a thriving industry now, and taking up this course may help me to break through this industry given my interest and background in the field. Last, is the fact that nutrition is one of the biggest concerns of the people in the country, and with BSCN being a very community-oriented program, it enacts us to not only be concerned with our immediate problems in nutrition, but also connects us with our social responsibility to help with these problems in the society. In this light, it gives me a chance to aid not only the nutrition of a few people, but a bigger scope in the society. 4. What are your initial impressions of the BSCN program?My first impression is that BSCN is a very holistic course, and that is because it is very community oriented. Therefore it does not only focus on my growth as an individual in my possible profession, but also someone who, as mentioned above, can fulfill her social responsibilities. It is also a very dynamic course as it is a competitive science course that opens doors to numerous career paths.5. What do you think are the career opportunities of the BSCN graduate? Would you be pursuing one of these career options? If YES, what and why? If NO, why?Some career opportunities Ive learned I could gain through this program include: dietitian/ nutritionist, fitness consultant, it could also open some doors for medicine, public health, and teaching. I do plan on trying to pursue most if not all in the fields I mentioned above to broaden my work experience, to maximize what I can take away with me from this course, and to be able to uplift the quality of life of the people in the community and country.6. How do you feel about being a student of the College of Home Economics?As a student of the College of Home Economics, I feel very safe and secure with my college. CHE is a small college with a very homey ambiance. Making a Response Essay1. What is a reflection paper?A reflection paper based on my perception of it from past basic writing courses Ive taken, is looking at a particular text and identifying the subject in focus, its significance as well as the implications it has in your life. It usually requires more of the analysis of values embedded in the text you are studying and trying to look for morals that may be applied in your day-to-day living.2. What are the parts of a reflection paper?In my opinion, the parts of a reflection paper may vary depending on the subject matter at hand. Ideally a paper would have an introduction, body and conclusion. Those are the main parts of a paper, but the contents and lengths of these parts differ from person to person based on the discussion of their reflections.3. What is a critique paper?A critique paper is a paper that would analyze and interpret the text in a deeper sense to relate all the ideas and underlying ideas in the text to form a cohesive understanding of it. It usually aims to look at the different elements of the text (for example: the theme, setting, symbols) and how it relates to one thesis statement (the argument you are trying to prove).4. What are the parts of a critique paper?Like the reflection paper, a critique paper does not have a strict format when it comes to its formation. Personally, when I write critique papers I usually have an introduction, body and conclusion, but in addition to these main categories, I would also include subcategories based on the elements being tackled and the background of the text I am studying. I personally like to include the context in my analysis so as to fortify my claims. But as mentioned above these parts may vary according to how one would like to present his/her arguments.5. What is the difference between a reflection and a critique paper?I believe that the main difference of a reflection paper and a critique paper is its analysis and its content, because a reflection paper is more subjective and it relates with the emotions and values that the writer of the essay feels in response to the text being studied, while a critique paper, though with some subjectivism injected with the facts one may choose to highlight, it may seem to be more objective and scholarly in terms of its analysis. A reflection papers analysis and content focuses on the morals and the application of these lessons in ones life, while the critique papers analysis and content focuses on a deeper reading of the text at hand.
