FMU 2015 Volleyball Outlook

The Francis Marion University volleyball team will open its 2015 season by playing at the NewberryCollege Tournament, Sept. 4-5, and then the following weekend by hosting its annual FMU Invitational Tourna-ment on Sept. 11-12 in the Smith University Center.

FMU head coach Paul MacDonald welcomes back five letterwinners, including three starters, from lastyear’s 9-20 squad that finished eighth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season.

Returning starters include 5-9 senior hitter Alexzandra Reed, 6-2 junior middleblocker Caroline Boone, and 6-1 junior hitter Carlie Smith. Last season, Reed ranked second in the PBC for kills per set (3.92) andfourth in total kills (400). Boone led the Patriots in hitting percentage (.265) and blocks (67), while rankingseventh in the conference in service aces per set (0.36). Smith suffered through an injury-plaque season in2014, but still averaged 1.63 kills and 2.02 digs per set. Also returning are 6-1 senior middleblocker ShelbySchindler and 6-1 sophomore hitter Meagan Fajman.

In addition to the returnees, 5-11 senior outside hitter Emily Sears will also be back on the court. Asecond-team All-Conference selection in 2013, she missed all of last year with an injury. Sears led the team in2013 in kills per set with 3.17, a figure that ranked sixth in the conference. She also ranked sixth in the PBC intotal kills (355), seventh in points per set (3.57), 19th in hitting percentage (.219), 25th in block assists (46), and44th in aces per set (0.17). Her hitting percentage was 18 points higher in PBC matches and she notched 20matches with double-figure kills, including 12 in PBC play. Sears came to FMU in 2013 after transferring fromthe University of Southern Mississippi.

The team’s recruiting class includes transfers Kadeeja Griffin (middleblocker), Samantha Hinrichs(setter), and Shelbi Meek (libero/outside hitter) and freshmen Georgia Garrison (outside hitter), Emily Stanley(libero), Carrie McGinnis (setter), and Chloe Attram (middleblocker).

“The keys to our success in 2015 will be to work hard, work together, stayhealthy, and remain disciplined in both good times and bad,” said MacDonald. “Ourpre-season has gone well. The team defense has made very good progress and ourpassing has improved tremendously since our initial workout on Aug. 17. I have beenmost pleased with the connection between our hitters and our two new setters.Despite both (setters) Samantha and Carrie being new to the program, we are aheadof schedule in meshing the hitters and setters. I expect both to see playing time aswe start the season.

“Along the frontline, Alexzandra is coming off an impactful junior campaignthat saw opposing defenses focus their attention on her. I am looking for her to applyher experience to lead the squad.” Reed is only 145 kills shy of 1,000 for her career.

“Caroline will be our anchor for the blocking and middle attack. Coming off asolid sophomore season, she is still improving in all facets of the game. A healthyCarlie has had a good pre-season, possesses the knowledge and understanding ofour system, and has made great strides since the spring season.

“The addition of Emily back into the fold gives us many more offensive op-tions. It has been a long road back for her, but we are looking forward to a successfulsenior year.” With her in the line-up, the Patriots posted a 21-9 mark in 2013 andplaced third in the Peach Belt.

“Shelby Schindler is an excellent blocking threat and Meagan has improvedher play and should see time hitting on the right side.”

In addition to the two setters, MacDonald also had positive comments to makeon the rest of his recruiting class as they prepare for the 2015 season. “Georgia,Kadeeja, and Shelbi Meek have demonstrated that they can elevate our play andmake an impact on the court. Chloe’s athleticism has been impressive and as shedevelops she will also impact the scoresheet. Emily has shown nice improvements, especially her serve, as she adjusts to the collegiate game.”

The Patriots’ 2015 schedule includes 14 home matches among the squad’s29 matches. FMU open its 42nd year of intercollegiate volleyball with an all-timerecord of 788-638. In nine seasons at Francis Marion, MacDonald is the winningestcoach in program history with 148 victories, while his career mark stands at 197-182.
