IMPORTANT

October 13th—Rusty Pilot Program instead of Normal Meeting

Please note that our regularly scheduled October 13th General Meet-

ing has been replaced by the "Rusty Pilots Seminar". Do not let the

title fool you for this seminar is a great learning experience for any

pilot. Pre-registration is required. Those that attend will receive a

certificate that counts as the ground portion of the Annual Flight Re-

view. As of this writing we have approximately 20 seats left. We are

limited by RSW as to the number of people we can seat in the RSW

Training and Conference Center because of fire regulations. This

seminar will be taught by 3 of our CFI's: Al Ledet, Skip Bentley and

Tyler Baston. If you have not registered and want to attend you will

find a link for registration in the message from Al Ledet CFI Coordi-

nator in this newsletter.

November 7th— Aviation Day, iPad Raffle

The Annual Page Field Day will take place on November 7, from 10:00

AM to 3:00 PM. As you are aware we have for several years used a

raffle as a fund raiser for our club. At the September Board of Direc-

tors meeting 2 important decisions were made. The first, we are in

the process of equipping all 3 of our aircraft with Stratus 2S units that

will be mounted and wired to the avionics buss. The Stratus units

will be programmed to turn on and off with the aircraft eliminating

the need of removal for charging. The second decision was to use the

proceeds of our raffle to assist in offsetting the cost of acquisition and

installation of the Stratus units. The raffle prize is an iPad Mini

which when equipped with ForeFlight will provide a great guidance

tool for aviation that includes free weather, NEXRAD Radar, ME-

TARS, TAF's, TFR's, AIRMETS, SIGMETS, NOTAMS, Back-Up Atti-

tude and more. Terry Voorhees will be organizing the raffle as I have

asked Marc Scott to work on a "special project". As you recently read

in an announcement from Terry we welcome any member that would

like to assist in selling raffle tickets. Please contact Terry Voorhees

([email protected]) 239-292-9231. Tickets are $5.00 each and if we

can sell in the range of 800 we can pay the raffle expenses and install

at virtually no cost to the club Stratus 2S in each aircraft. As noted in

President’s Message contd from page 1

Terry's previous message there are rewards for the top ticket seller and the "winning" ticket

seller.

Annual Flight Review — President’s notes

Those of you that have completed an Aircraft Checkout or Annual Flight Review as outlined in

the Fort Myers Flying Club Procedure know that a "go around" was required. On Friday Sept.

25 I was flying on US Airways/American Airlines from Chicago to Charlotte on an Airbus

A321. The weather was IFR and during the approach I had seen the ground through some

breaks in the overcast. When under 1000 feet above the ground the pilot applied full power

and we went around. As always there were a few screams from infrequent fliers. In an an-

nouncement the Captain later explained the aircraft that had landed ahead of us had not

cleared the runway and the controller had called for the go around. The procedure was profes-

sionally done as I'm sure that our members that have completed a checkout can now do if re-

quired.

November 10th— General Meeting, Guest Speaker:

Our November 10th meeting will feature as our guest speaker Mr. Jamie Beckett of A.O.P.A.

Prior to the meeting, beginning at 6:00 PM we will have a "hot dog roast" for all in attendance.

Plan to arrive a little early, enjoy a hot dog and "parking lot flying aka hanger aviation" with

other members. Your spouse or significant other are always welcome at our meetings. If you

know a person that might be a potential member do not hesitate to bring them.

December 8th Meeting — Annual Business Meeting, Voting of Board of Directors

Our December meeting is the annual election for members of the Board of Directors. Three di-

rectors will be elected for 3 year terms. Our guest speaker, Mr. David A. Bear, is from the FAA

Office in Tampa and will review accident statistics as related to southwest Florida. I'm sure

you will find Mr. Bear both informative and interesting.

Recently my "non-owned" renters insurance came up for renewal. After a Board of Directors

meeting several months ago Steve Hall suggested members place their "non-owned" coverage

with STARR Insurance, our primary carrier, which is a great idea. If you are looking to place

this type of coverage there is an application on the Fort Myers Flying Club website.

NEWS FROM ITALY:

Paolo has completed his first

solo cross country.

The September meeting of the FMFC Board was held on the 16th at Base Ops FBO at Page Field.

<> 7ME flew 30 hours last month, and for the first time 4CC flew more hours than 21Q.

<> Membership levels remain steady.

<> The board approved the purchase and installation of a Stratus 2 for each of the three planes.

<> The units will be wired into the aircraft, so users will not have to recharge the battery. The proceeds of the iPad

mini raffle will be applied to the purchase cost.

<> The discipline officer continues to monitor members’ issues with dispatching and checking in aircraft with

myFBO, as well as a member who flew while on inactive status.

<> The board also discussed the return to active flying status of a member who made an unapproved type of flight.

After this member supplies more information, he will be invited to address the board next month to have his

flying privileges reinstated.

<> Activities planned for the fall months include the President’s Hot Dog Roast Nov. 18, and also an AOPA

Rusty Pilot Seminar October 13.

<> Two aircraft are already booked for the Pancake Breakfast at Arcadia on October 17 Bliek and Scott will continue

work on the Passport Program.

<> The board approved the purchase of a 1/4 page ad in the Sundowners Dinner Dance program.

<> Ledet reports than only 45 seats remain for the Rusty Pilot Program, and members are encouraged to sign up

quickly.

<> Several club CFI’s will be on hand to sign up pilots for the flight portion after the seminar.

<> A new printer and computer were purchased for the club office.

<> Del Rosario is working on developing a way the club can accept electronic payments with minimal fees.

<> The Rules and Regulation will be updated to reflect the new tail number for the club’s C182.

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held on October 21, 2015 at the Page Field Base Ops FBO at 6:30 pm.

Please contact any board member if you have questions about club operations.

Board Meeting Synopsis

Page 3

The Aviation Study Group will meet on Saturday October 31 in the seminar room (upstairs) at Base

Ops FBO at 9 AM. This group brainstorms and discusses techniques for IFR (and VFR) flying chal-

lenges in a scenario-based format. This is not an IFR ground school, but is an opportunity to discuss

topics of interest in real life operations.

The group chooses scenarios from the IFR Mastery Series as a starting point but then expands the dis-

cussion from there. Please advise me if there is a particular subject (approaches, navigation, etc.) you

would like to discuss and we will find a course that emphasizes this area, if possible. CFII Nancy

Moore moderates the discussions. Please bring an IPad or laptop if you use either of these for refer-

ence or flight planning. All pilots are welcome. We are asking for a $2 donation per pilot to cover costs

of training materials and refreshments. Coffee and donuts will be available. If have any questions,

please contact Ellen Herr at 239 560 8526 or [email protected].

Glad You Asked

Q: What is the proper way to secure

N944CC’s yokes?

A: Great Question! When the plane is in

the hangar the yokes DO NOT need to be

tied with the seat belts. In fact, this dam-

ages the wrap on the yoke. So please

stop

If the plane is tied down outside, please

continue to secure the yokes as well as

the proper wing and tail tie downs.

Thanks for asking!
