Flying  With  Firearms  

Hunters  and  avid  shooters  o5en  find  that  they  are  faced  with  the  situa:on  of  flying  with  a  

firearm.    

By  understanding  the  regula:ons  and  guidelines,  flying  with  firearms  may  not  be  as  difficult  as  you  may  think.    

The  Transporta:on  Safety  Administra:on  (TSA)  gives  detailed  guidelines  regarding  what  firearms  and  firearm  supplies  you  can  travel  with,  as  well  as  how  they  need  

to  be  transported.    

Read  the  guidelines  and  make  sure  you  understand  them  completely.  It  could  even  be  helpful  to  carry  a  copy  with  you  when  you  fly.  Firearms  must  be  declared  to  the  TSA  agent  and  be  transported  unloaded  in  a  

hard  case  with  a  lock.    

Keep  in  mind  that  airlines  may  have  restric:ons  as  well.  Call  your  airline  if  you  have  concerns  or  if  you  

are  not  able  to  locate  their  guidelines  online.    

There  are  no  federal  limits  on  the  amount  of  ammuni:on  that  you  can  check  in  at  the  airport.  However,  your  airline  may  have  a  limit  that  can  be  

checked.    

Ammuni:on  and  guns  can  be  transported  together  in  the  same  hard  sided,  locked  case.    

Reloaded  ammuni:on  can  be  transported,  as  long  as  it  is  in  a  cardboard,  metal,  plas:c,  or  wood  box  for  

shipping.    

There  is  no  federal  limit  on  the  number  of  guns  that  can  be  carried  in  your  carry-­‐on  luggage.  Airlines  may  prohibit  

it,  however,  which  is  why  you  want  to  consider  the  airline’s  guidelines,  too.
