That was one of many memorable llrghtsduring an intenswe oneweek holiday in hewEngland by five British VFR pilots.Wewerethere to fly, packing in 22 airfields over s ix days,each of usflying around ten hocrs, skippingonly one day due to weather. The legendaryease and welcoming attitude fOr CAacross theUSA has to be seen to be believed

The pilots were all members of the BristolAero Club (now based at Kemble), which hasa strong tradit on of regular club fly-outs andmonthly group meetings. We all knew eachother reasonably well sooally and had flowntogether on va r i o u s short and longer trips. Afew years ago, one of the members spoke at ameetingabout his experience of a flyingholiday tn the USA The next year, anothergroup member iorned hrm, Atter a lew years,this has grown to live. Earlier t'lps had beenbased in Princeton, New Jersey. This year, thegroup went to KingAvration at Manslield, nearBoston, for the second time.

Our decrsron to travel during early May was agood one. The ho rday season starts fromMemorial Day (last day in May) ‐ that seems tobe the day everyone fills up their swrmmingpools ‐ after whrcr prices and occupancy ratesshoot up, Hotel rooms were easily found eachnight, except a couple of nights at Mansfreld,which may have been due to graduationce remon ies and/or a major sport event. Weatherwas similar to the UKbut we were able to flyVFR well clear of cloud at all times; it was morethe blustew wrnd and crosswrnd landings thatbenefitted from n ‘ o r e experrence.
