FLYING ADVENTURE A Week in New England David Chambers, along with friends from Bristol Aero Club, rent two C1725 and visit 22 US airfields, from a whale of a big one to a minnow hidden in the hills i can't believe this ISlegal," said a mice from the back seat. Here we are, flying a couple of rented Cessna 172s up the Hudson River at LSOOft, haVing made little more than a standard radio request for transrt. We're pdSSing close by Manhattan, lower than the new Freedom Tower, and the news are magnrlicent. That was one of many memorable llrghts during an intenswe oneweek holiday in hew England by five British VFR pilots. We were there to fly, packing in 22 airfields over six days, each of us flying around ten hocrs, skipping only one day due to weather. The legendary ease and welcoming attitude fOr CA across the USA has to be seen to be believed t'llllr, The pilots were all members of the Bristol Aero Club (now based at Kemble), which has a strong tradit on of regular club fly-outs and monthly group meetings. We all knew each other reasonably well sooally and had flown together on various short and longer trips. A few years ago, one of the members spoke at a meeting about his experience of a flying holiday tn the USA The next year, another group member iorned hrm, Atter a lew years, this has grown to live. Our decrsron to travel during early May was agood one. The ho rday season starts fromMemorial Day (last day in May) ‐ that seems tobe the day everyone fills up their swrmmingpools ‐ after whrcr prices and occupancy ratesshoot up, Hotel rooms were easily found eachnight, except a couple of nights at Mansfreld,which may have been due to graduationce remon ies and/or a major sport event. Weatherwas similar to the UKbut we were able to flyVFR well clear of cloud at all times; it was morethe blustew wrnd and crosswrnd landings thatbenefitted from n ‘ o r e experrence.
