Doug Magrath is a professional wood turner from London, Ontario. He clearly demonstrated why he is able to make a living at the lathe. In his other life, he was a Chartered Accountant and began turning in earnest in 1996. The idea of turning firewood into Fine Art and the satisfaction received, had him hooked and he is obviously still hooked today. In an average year Doug roughs about 2000 bowls and supplies nine outlets with his finished work! The logistics are mind-boggling.

Some of the highlights that Doug illustrated included:

Start a bowl blank between centres so that you can optimize the grain pattern in the bowl. For a standard #2 spur centre, drill a 1” hole about ½” deep with a Forstner bit in either the bark side or the pith centre for Natural Edge bowls. After initial cuts, you can evaluate the grain pattern and adjust the tailstock placement slightly to improve the balance of the grain. For a standard salad bowl with the pith to the rim of the bowl, you should end up at all possible with a hyperbole pattern centred in the bottom of the bowl.

Invest in curved tool rests if you intend to do much bowl turning. A curved rest allows you to make a sweeping cut with the tool well supported throughout the cut. The Oneway design is reasonable in price and function well and there are others available as well.

Always work with sharp tools. Invest in a jig if you have a hard time free hand grinding. Especially when taking the last cut or as Doug says, “The Money Cut”, take the time to put a fresh edge on your gouge.

Natural edge bowls are a challenge for the Novice to Intermediate turner, but once you have tried them, you will be sure to make many more. People love them and are intrigued with their appearance. For functional NE bowls, it is preferable to remove the bark. For more artistic bowls, to preserve the bark edge, use wood preferably felled in the fall or winter and use CA glue to saturate the cambium/bark junction.

On salad bowls, Doug uses #3 jaws in his Stronghold chuck. This provides an opportunity at the finishing stage to incorporate part of that tennon into the base of the bowl. For best appearance, Doug tends to a somewhat smaller foot than the 1/3 rule that is commonly stated by turners.

Doug uses 3 coats of Waterlox polymerized Tung Oil as his primary finish and rubs it down with 0000 steel wool to achieve a satin finish.

He finished his presentation with a review of the many bowls he had brought with him, with special emphasis on working with burls and how to get the best out of them. This is a subject worthy of a night of its own some day, but he certainly gave us a great introduction. You will soon be able to read an article about Doug and his business in the December issue of Wood Magazine. I also found an excellent presentation of his work at http://www.martenarts.com/Artists/ This ranked as one of the best demonstrations I have been able to attend in recent years. Thank you Doug.

Christmas Party Activity and Prizes Mark your calendar for December 11. We will gather at the Burlington Legion Hall to celebrate the holiday season and have some great fun and fellowship.

Bring your significant other to this event that starts at 7.00 pm and runs till 9.30 pm. Admission is free, but there are some catches. We decorate the tree with ornaments that we make, so please bring one or two of your handmade ornaments. There will be a draw during the course of the evening to pick an ornament until they are all taken.

We would also appreciate toys in support of the Burlington Firefighter’s toy drive for needy families. These will be collected during the evening.

There will be refreshments and snacks served later in the evening, draws for door prizes, a competition and a raffle.

Competition: Bring your best turning creations. The categories are: Novice, Intermediate, and Open. If you are not sure which one you are in, ask a member of the executive, and we’ll figure it out. As usual for the Christmas competition, the judges will be the significant others. The prizes are $50, $30, and $20, for first, second, and third, in each category.

Raffle: Tickets are $10 each or $25 for three. The prizes are: a Oneway Stronghold Chuck, a Oneway Talon Chuck, a Oneway Wolverine Sharpening System, a 7/8” Steb Centre, a Sorby Texturing Tool, a Pepper Mill Kit, and a Pen Kit. The first ticket out picks from the list above, and the next ticket holder picks from the remaining

prizes, and so on each time. If you are not present, you will get the prize appropriate for the sequence of your drawn ticket.

How to get there: The place is the Legion Hall, 828 Legion Road, Burlington.

Take Brant Street south from the QEW. Go to the first set of lights south of Fairview and turn right onto Grahams Line. Go one block west and turn right (north) onto Legion Road. The Legion Hall is on the left.

(You can find a map on our web site.)
