BA (Hons) Decorative ArtsGraduates of 2015

School of Art & DesignNottingham Trent University

The contemporary craft and design market is a big industry and it’s hungry for new recruits, who have imagination and know how to use it, an affinity for materials and the knowledge to manipulate them, combined with an ability to design and communicate and a flair to predict what

people really want.

And here they are!

I am quite sure they will follow previous alumni into senior roles in retail buying, management and design, or they will establish formidable careers as studio makers, artists and illustrators, or they will become outstanding academics

and visionary teachers.

With that in mind I would like to wish them all the very best of luck for the future, well done.

I would also like to mention all those whose dedication, commitment and loyalty have made this possible; from the senior management, the administrative and technical staff and of course the indispensable Decorative Arts academic

team.

Thank you all. Lharne Shaw

My work is inspired by anything I see around me, particularly geometry-based with exciting forms. I love to bring the idea of shape to the forefront of all my projects and take it to its full potential using textiles and embroidery, working with both contemporary and traditional techniques as well as maintaining a

strong focus on colour.

The collection showcases the individuality embodied within each of the twelve star signs. Each vessel uses a playful yet poignant material choice in an attempt to echo the diverse nature of each personality. Whether it be fact or fiction, wisdom or myth, the stars inspire each stereotype to come to life through this series of allusive vessels.

The taxonomy collection is a range of handmade and printed interior accessories, inspired by curious collections of archival artefacts and peculiar creatures from a range of British museums. Translating these whimsical themes through the use of ceramic forms and printed surfaces, to create an intriguingly aesthetic space.

The hats focus on form and structure complemented by colour. The shapes are inspired by architecture both modern and historical and each piece focuses on a different aspect of this. The hats are like small sculptures, with a contemporary modern feel.

Designers such as Chanel 1950’s structure to Laura Ashley’s repeat pattern prints have influenced my work .I have combined print, dyeing, line drawings and design that connects children and a high end market.

My inspiration comes from many things, insects, objects with detailed patterns, dot work, mandalas. Which all can be transferred onto fabric through embroidery.

My inspiration has stemmed from a love of literature that captivates me with hidden messages and inner beauty. I wanted to make decorative pieces that reflected that. I began to explore the historical context and this lead to the arrow that I felt had both a beautiful and deadly element.

I create what’s called “textile taxidermy” which is preserving the craftsmanship of taxidermy techniques but translating them into embroidery, stitch and fabric replicating the real animal or bird. My collection encapsulates the animal form, focusing on shape and colour formation, enhancing features to create soft furnishings and bespoke objects

My woodwork explores the relationship between unfinished and finished wood, and how this combination can question what aesthetically pleasing design is. The theme behind my designs is comparisons; curved/straight, dark/light and rough/smooth. I extract my shapes from ‘everyday objects’ and focus primarily on surface, texture, and form.

My idea is to manipulate and test materials through computer design and laser cutting in order to increase flexibility and the ability to bend into forms which would ordinarily be unnatural for materials such as wood and acrylic. My ideas are translated through lighting which is heavily influenced by Scandinavian design.
