FLUACHEM® Expansion Joints

FLUACHEM® expansion joints are traditionally defined as single‐layer expansion joints, which ‐ according to application ‐ are made from

(1) Fluoropolymers, PTFE‐based, either with fabric reinforcement, or unrein‐forced pure PTFE

(2) Elastomers (Fluoro‐), (FKM, EPDM, Butyl), pure or reinforced with glass fabric and/or with wire mesh, or

(3) A combination of both fluoropolymer and fluoroelastomer in one material (laminate), with glass fabric as the reinforcing layer

All types are manufactured as compos‐ite materials under very strict quality control. FLUACHEM® expansion joints provide a number of advantages, includ‐ing superior chemical, abrasion and tear resistance, and very high design flexibility.

A typical application area for FLUACHEM® expansion joints is the flue gas cleaning system of a conventionally fired power station, which may be sub‐divided into dry and wet areas (see overview). On the dry side the expansion joints are exposed to high temperatures and flue gases, which may contain solids such as dust or fly ashes. On the wet side, the gas temperature may fall below dew point, which will expose the expansion joints to aggressive condensates.

2. FLUACHEM® (Fluoro‐) Elastomer

The core of the Fluoropolymer material is an ultra‐strong and flexible glass fabric, which is protected on one side by a PTFE‐based coating, and on the other side by a PTFE‐film.

This construction ensures excellent chemical and acid resistance because PTFE is the only material in direct contact with the gas/medium, and has excellent tear strength and great flex‐ibility even at continuous temperatures up to +300°C (570°F).

1. FLUACHEM® Fluoropolymer

In the manufacture of fluoroelastomer expansion joints we use pure 100% virgin terpolymer (FKM) containing a minimum of 68% fluorine. Other types are made from elastomers such as EPDM (ethylene propylene) and Butyl rubber. The elastomers are reinforced with acid resistant glass fabrics and/or with special s.s. wire mesh.

The fluoroelastomers (FKM), that we use, is the genuine pure quality com‐pound, recognized by leading suppliers all over the world.

3. FLUACHEM® type Flualine® Combination Laminate

The third generation of expansion joints for desulphurization and flue gas cleaning systems, made from a new and highly advanced range of combination laminates. The FLUALINE® range combines the advantages of the PTFE and FKM materials in one laminate, providing extra versability in use as both sides of the expansion joint can be turned against the gas side! A truly dual‐purpose material, which gives you extreme resistance against wear and tear on the one side and excellent resistance against chemical and acid exposure on the other. Available in different combinations and types of laminate.

FLUACHEM® Fluoropolymer, (Fluoro‐) Elastomer and Flualine® expansion joints fulfil even the greatest expecta‐tions in respect of long‐term reliability and service in the most demanding flue duct environments.

DrainDifferent forms are available to drain the expansion joint of condensate or other liquid by simply opening and clos‐ing the drain valve. They are normally vulcanized or welded directly onto the FLUACHEM® expansion joint.

Flange gasketThis 100% PTFE, self‐adhesive, flange gasket is used to seal the flange area of FLUACHEM® Fluoropolymer expansion joints to ensure excellent gas sealing.

Fastening methodA special fastening technique is used for the installation of FLUACHEM® (Fluoro‐)Elastomer expansion joints. The technique involves a special spring washer, which provides a back pressure to keep the joint tight. Re‐tightening of fixing bolts is therefore not necessary after start‐up of the plant.

Pre‐formed cornersFLUACHEM® Elastomer expansion joints can be supplied with pre‐formed corners (for both negative and positive pressure) to increase the ability of the joint to take up movements. (refer to Selection Criteria)

Special Designs

Lining seals in chimneysPrevention of condensate leakages through joints in the chimney lining is effectively achieved by using a FLUACHEM® expansion joint in Fluoroelastomer (FKM). This type of expansion joint can be supplied open, to be joined on site by means of heat vulcanizing. The fastening elements used are corrosion resistant.

Special damper sealIn many flue gas cleaning systems, whether wet or dry, it is important to prevent the media from leaking from one area of the system to another. Dampers are used to control the flow in the duct system, and sealing of the damper valve is important for preventing leakage. We make a special damper seal, which is fitted around or in between the damper valve. The seal is available in two versions: with single or with double profile for extra tightness.

Maintenance & repairNeither Fluoropolymer nor Elastomer expansion joints require any special maintenance. On the contrary, they are characterized by reliable and depend‐able operation. If minor repairs become necessary, the expansion joints can be welded or vulcanized on site by means of portable welding equipment.

Alternative applicationsFLUACHEM® expansion joints have proved to give superior service in applications other than flue gas clean‐ing. Our thorough knowledge of the material qualities and our extensive engineering experience make numerous other applications possible. Contact our experienced engineers for further information.

For more than 40 years, KE‐Burgmann has taken an active part in the development and manufacture of fabric expansion joints for power generating systems all over the world. Our multi‐layer fabric expansion joints are designed to accommodate customer needs over temperatures up to 1400°C (2550°F), and have continuously served both conventional and new applications successfully.

In the early 1980s we started working with the world’s leading suppliers to find materials suitable for use in flue gas cleaning systems. We required materials with proven properties in terms of chemical resistance, flexibility and wear, coupled with the ability to operate at temperatures up to 300°C (570°F).

The research quickly focused on two major materials groups: (Fluoro‐)Elastomers and Fluoropolymers. These materials were subsequently used for manufacturing ex‐pansion joints and a new range of products called FLUACHEM®, especially suitable for flue gas cleaning systems, was born.

FLUACHEM® expansion joints are customized to the specific customer and system requirements regarding design (flexibility), sealing properties, and extended lifetime under very aggressive conditions. For this purpose, KE‐Burgmann uses advanced engineering techniques, including the latest computer software and methods (CAE/CAU) and finite element analyses. The expansion joints are tested under actual and simulated operating conditions, and all results are recorded in detailed material specifications, test reports, and drawings etc.

Since their development, FLUACHEM® expansion joints have demonstrated conclusively their reliability and operating dependability in power stations all over the world. For instance, the majority of all German power stations are fitted with KE‐Burgmann expansion joints, with a total of over 20 million operating hours.

KE‐Burgmann is the reliable choice when it comes to expansion joints:
