It’s important for you to get the flu shot every year. Even healthy people can get the flu and it can be very serious.

I get the flu shot every year for several reasons—I have asthma, I care for my elderly mom and I have a couple of grandkids who are too young to be vaccinated. I don’t want to be responsible for passing the flu to my loved ones.

Address

You can’t get the flu from the flu shot. It is what’s called an inactivated vaccine meaning there is no live virus in the vaccine. I did, however, get the flu once even though I was vaccinated. Studies show that if vaccinated, flu disease is generally milder.

Flu disease kills on average about 20,000 people every year (range of 12,000-56,000), including healthy persons.

Explain

Getting the flu can be costly. It may cause you to be out of work for several days and can even cause complications like pneumonia. 10

COMMUNICATION: ADDRESSING MYTHS ABOUT FLU VACCINE1. The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu.

You may have side effects that seem like symptoms of the flu, but it is not the flu. The side effects of getting the flu vaccine are considerably less severe than the flu.

The flu vaccine has an inactivated virus, meaning it cannot cause the flu virus to replicate in your body. Therefore, it cannot give you flu.

2. The flu vaccine is effective.

The flu vaccine isn’t perfect, and there is a chance you will still get the flu. However, if you get the influenza vaccine your symptoms are likely to be less severe.

3. Healthy people do need the flu vaccine.

Every year, previously healthy children and adults die from the flu. Further, it is important to keep the flu virus from entering your house to protect children, grandparents, etc.
