PREPARATION1. The pallet does have a rough surface, but there could be a crack or two that could need attention by fi lling with a bit of wood fi ller. Lightly sand, keeping the rough texture; wipe off with a lint-free cloth.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSBasecoating the Palette Box2. Basecoat the entire box with Blue Mist; using the glaze wash brush, to achieve an opaque coverage.

Stenciled Background3. With the Baroque Medallion stencil and Blue Mist mixture (Blue Mist + Snow White 1:2), stencil over the surface and side edges of the box; using the med stencil brush.

Position the stencil on the surface. Secure with the Frog Tape or hold with your fi ngers. Load the medium stencil brush with a bit of the Blue Mist mixer, swirl the brush on a blue shop towel to remove excess. Apply color in a circular motion one direction and then in a circular motion in the other direction (changing directions fre-quently) over the stencil. Fill in some of the design fully and leave other areas incomplete.

Carefully remove stencil by holding one end with your fi ngers and lifting the opposite end. Repeat steps to complete stenciling. Clean stencil and brush immedi-ately; using the DecoMagic Cleaner. Lightly mist over the stenciled areas with the matte spray.

Transferring Design4. Transfer the lines for the irises

and leaves; the pussy willows will be transferred after the

irises have been completed.

Basecoating Irises and Leaves5. The basecoats for the irises

and leaves are washes of thinned acrylic paint (80% water/20%

paint); using the appropriate size shader or fi lbert. Wash top four

petals with Orchid. Wash bottom two petals and bud with Pansy

Lavender. Wash leaves, stems and calyxes with Hauser Dark Green

Refer to Image 2

Shading Irises6. Allow washes to dry. Shade by

corner loading the angle and fl oat-ing the color. The background base

color is going to work as a high-light. Corner load the angle with

Mulberry, fl oat shading along the pattern lines of the top four petals,

fl oating into the petal areas; mop

to soften. Then at the bottom of the large front petal, fl oating a wide fl oat up into the petal; mop to soften.

Now corner load the angle with Red Violet, fl oat a wide shade across the beginning of each lower petal, fl oating into the petal areas; mop to soften. Then randomly fl oat shade tints along the bottom two petals and across the bottom of the buds.

Pull the veins in the three petals with Red Violet; using the 5/0 liner. With the sm Texture brush and Golden Straw, dance in the beards. Lightly repeat step with Light Buttermilk, randomly dancing in highlight on the beards.

Shading Leaves

7. Corner load the angle with Hauser Dark Green, fl oat a wide shade on the leaves and stems that lay behind another iris, leaf, stem or calyx. Also across the base of each leaf and stem. Mop to soften. With the 5/0 liner and Hauser Dark Green, pull the veins in the leaves, strokes on the calyxes and extend leaf tips.

Pussy Willows8. Transfer the design lines for the pussy willows. Double load the 0 liner with Light Cinnamon + Soft Black, pull the stems. Basecoat the pods with Light Cinnamon, us-ing the 2 fi lbert. Corner load the angle with Soft Black, fl oat a shade across the bottom of each pod. With the sm Texture brush and Bleached Sand, dance one coat on each catkin (fl uff y part). Lightly dance to create irregular outside edges and a texture eff ect. Repeat step if neces-sary, to achieve a proper coverage over the background color, but still maintain a fl uff y look.

For proper use of the Texture Brush, use the follow-ing method: Dampen the bristles with water to start the separation of bristles. Tap bristles into the paint on your palette, hold it perpendicular to your pal-ette, pounce it up and down to get some of the paint off —keeping the paint sparse on the brush. Note—this brush can be used on the whole foot or just the toe. Tap lightly on the surface, dance with the brush up and down, rolling the brush in diff erent directions in be-tween your fi ngers when it is up in the air (like dancing the twist, light on your feet). Allow some drying time in between dances so the paint sets up and you don’t end up with a globby or muddy look.

Corner load the angle with Light Cinnamon, randomly fl oat in a choppy, hit and miss shade at the base of each catkin. Repeat the same steps with Neutral Grey. With the sm Texture brush, dance a highlight of Light Buttermilk at the top third of each catkin; refer to photo for placement.

FINISHING9. To protect your painted piece, varnish the entire box with the Dura Clear Matte Varnish; using the Oval Wash Combo brush. This brush doesn’t leave any brushstroke marks after the varnish has dried.
