Flow Meter Fundamentals
4
What is a flow meter?
A flow meter is a device that measures the rate of flow and provides either a visual display or some type of communication. (Output)
Provides information for instantaneous flow rate
May provide information for instantaneous flow direction
May provide information for totalized flow

Flow Meter Fundamentals
5
Why measure flow?
What does flow rate mean?“Rate” implies “per unit of time”
What does flow total mean?“Total” implies the total volume passed through the meter
Flow is generally measured to accomplish something Display only Display and control Data-logging
Examples of Rate:
Gallons per minute (GPM)
Cubic feet per second (CFS)
Examples of Total:
Gallons (Gal)
Cubic Feet (CF)

Flow Meter Selection
7
Mechanical vs Electromagnetic
Mechanical meters have been around the longest, and include: propeller style, turbine, multi-jet and paddlewheel. Moving part meters Economical, require longer straight run of pipe, less accurate than mag meters
Electromagnetic metersNo moving parts, install in tight spaces, more accurate than mechanical style meters
Example: Propeller style in line mechanical meter Example: Magnetic style in line flow meter

Flow Meter Selection
8
Insertion Style vs Inline style – Both available as mechanical or electromagnetic
Insertion Style Meters - Easy to install, typically no welding is required, and some can be installed while the line is under pressure (no system downtime)Require longer upstream/downstream pipe requirementsTypically less accurate than in line meters
Inline Flow Meters – Require more labor to install. Install in tight spaces (typically 2 pipe diameters upstream and 1 downstream), and are more accurate than insertion style meters

Proper Meter Installation
12
Follow Manufacturers recommendations on straight run pipe to ensure the meter is working properly and within specified accuracy range

Flow Profile and Meter Performance
13
As velocity varies, is there a place where the average velocity is most representative?
Is the flow laminar (smooth)? Is the pipe full?
Proper insertion depth for mechanicals is critical
Velocity slows to zero at pipe wall
As velocity increases, curve becomes parabolic
(bullet shaped)

How They Work: Mechanical Meters

Paddlewheel/turbine spins with flow
Magnets in wheel pass near sensor
Sensor has either reed switch, or Hall-effect electronic switch, with “pulse out” via open collector, current sinking output

How they Work: Mechanical Meters
15
Example of irrigation mechanical propeller meter – Require minimum of 10 pipe diameters upstream, 5 downstream to ensure accuracy
Straightening vanes available –Require minimum 5 upstream/2 downstream

Use Michael Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction to determine the flow of liquid in a pipe Magnetic field is generated and channeled into the liquid flowing through the pipe Flow of a conductive liquid through the magnetic field will cause a voltage signal to be sensed by
electrodes As the fluid moves faster, the voltage generated is proportional to the movement of the liquid The electronic transmitter processes the voltage signal to determine liquid flow (rate and total)

How They Work: Electromagnetic Meters
17
Electrical coils placed outside the flow are momentarily energized.
A magnetic field crosses the flow at right anglesMotion of a conductive fluid through the field generates a
small amount of electricity, as in a generator (more flow = more voltage)
Electrodes measure the changing voltageDisplay unit shows rate and total

Flow Meter OptionsNew trends in flow meters, mechanical vs no moving parts, cost benefitsElectromagnetic – More accurate, no moving parts to wear out,
install in tight spaces, come standard with outputs, very low maintenance, good for clean or dirty water, typically telemetry ready
Ultrasonic – No need to break into piping, no moving parts to wear out, no obstruction in flow path, complete chemical compatibility, measure wide range of flowing media from clean liquids to slurries

jWAVE Description• The jWAVE Flow Meter solution starts with the jWAVE App and
works on both iOS and Android devices
21

What is an Ultrasonic Meter?• An ultrasonic flow meter is a type of flow meter that measures the
velocity of a fluid with ultrasound to calculate volume flow. • Using ultrasonic transducers, the flow meter can measure the average
velocity along the path of an emitted beam of ultrasound• An ultrasonic flow meter is installed on the outside of the pipe and is able
to sense, or meter, through the wall of the pipe.• Types –Open Channel, Doppler, Transit Time – jWAVE is a transit time
meter

What is an Ultrasonic Meter?• Ultrasonic flow meters are affected by the acoustic properties of
the fluid and can be impacted by temperature, density, viscosity and suspended particulates depending on the specific flow meter.
23

• Transit Time (jWAVE)• Transit-time flowmeters measure the difference in travel time between
pulses transmitted in a single path along and against the flow. Transit Time meters prefer relatively clean fluids.
