Dear Readers,Let me start off by saying to all those who picked up

the first two issues and were anxiously awaiting this one, were

sorry for the delay. Its February and were running on BPT.

Honestly is because this is such a labor of love that

sometimes juggling the editorial duties here, Digital Grime and

my other business responsibilities can result in delays. No time

for excuses though, this issues is but to be monumental.

Seeing that its Black History Month, we wanted to

take the time to recognize the accomplishments of so many of

the people that inspired us to do great things. We also wanted

to briefly pause and note the passing of a great icon in the one

and only Teddy Pendergrass who left us this month. Hence this

month were going black in remembrance of our roots because

honestly without them thered be no Flow Fac. So to all of them

we say thank you with this special issue.

    Cover Story //

Its a matter of knowing our roots, our history. Its about doing

more than just spitting out Martin Luther King Jr. for every

question related to African American history and its about

more than the story of black people.

    This is ourstory.

These are just a few of the names that line the hall of our

tremendously perilous past. These are people who decided that

color didnt dictate their goals or their successes. You want to

talk about haters? Ask Fredrick Douglas how it felt to have

people want to kill him. How about asking my ancestor Booker

    T. Washington how it felt that faithful afternoon he strolled

down the halls of the white house to meet the President face

to face in a country that still had segregated bathrooms?

These people reach out to us beyond the chasm of history to

tell us that while the world may want to find reasons for us to

fight and separate us through our differences that we all can

    achieve more despite it.

As African Americans we should be

proud of our past and all the people

who built it brick for brick. Yet, let us

not be fooled into thinking that we did it

alone. We had some help from our

brothers and sisters of all colors and

backgrounds who stood the lines with

us, often to the betrayal of their own

    friends

    and

    family.

    All so

    that one

    day we

    could all

    look at

    one another as equals.

And while today some of our top entrepreneurs are lined with

all the earth tones of the rainbow and a black man sits at the

highest office of the land the work is far from done. It wont be

until we dont see that color at all, when we can only see the

deeds of the individual and the walk they took to get where

they are that men such as Dr. King can truly be honored with a

    mission completed.

    The Apple Juice Kid

    Miles Remixed

He was the crown prince of jazz. Miles Davis could make a

sound that baffled the imagination and inspired it all at thesame time. His name is one that brought up almost instinctually

by so many presented with that ever elusive question; Whos

    your favorite jazz musician.

The Apple Juice Kid is a producer whos worked with the likes

of Wale, MC Lyte and more. Affiliated with Okayplayer/illroots,

Juice, a songwriter and bandleader has found musical gold

with this reshaping of an American Legend.

In Miles Remixed, Juice takes on the hefty task of creating a

fresh new sound from the already powerfully moving music of

the pioneering trumpeter. Apparently, Juice is no stranger to

challenge as he has also tacked other greats such as his Luis

Armstrong Remixed. From reinterpretations like Busta Miles to

the melodic Yahzarah and Raheem DeVaughn featured Come

2 Me the collaboration proves a beautiful and overall

successful blend. Keeping the track list down to a simple dozen

also lends to ensures that at the end of this project I was left

feeling that this was the type of thing Miles himself would

    probably love grooving to.

    3 of 5: GREAT - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Teddy Pendergrass //A Musical Icon Much like A Raisin in the Sun is required reading. No slow

jams mixtape could call itself complete without the soulful

    sound of this incredible musician.

Born in Kingstree, South Carolina, Teddy grew up absent a

father at an early age. Jesse Pendergrass, left when Teddy wasa child and was later murdered leaving the young boy without a

    father.

Teddy found himself emptying his feelings into song. From his

time with the Edison Mastersingers to his time as a drummer

for the famous Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes for which he

took over as lead singer. The group is best known for its hit

song, If You Dont Know Me by Now.

After going solo, Teddy established himself as a musical

powerhouse, releasing five albums from 1977-1981 before a

tragic car accident paralyzed him from the waist down.

The incident did not stop him though; presenting the world

with Hold Me he introduced the world to a little known

female vocalist. You may know her. Her names Whitney

    Houston.

His music has been covered and sampled throughout the yearsby everyone from Babyface to Patti Labelle. Unfortunately, on

    January 13th

, Teddy left us while recovering form colon cancer

    surgery.

With an impressive catalog of music that continues to define

generation after generation, Teddy Pendergrass can be best

defined by his 1978 album title; Life is a Song Worth Singing.
