Dr. Joe Richardson is a dental specialist in the field of Periodontics. Periodontics is the dental specialty that emphasizes treatment of varying conditions and diseases that af-fect the gums and underlying structures that support the teeth. Dr. Richardson has train-ing in all aspects of Periodontics including Guided Tissue Regeneration, Periodontal Plastic Surgery and Dental Implantology. He graduated from Wichita State University where he studied Organic Chemistry. From

there, he and his wife, Cynthia, moved to Gainesville. He spent one year work-ing in the field of Molecular Microbiology and published a paper on the infec-tious nature of bacteria that cause periodontal disease. He attended dental school at the University Of Florida College Of Dentistry where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine, Master’s of Science and his Specialty Certifi-cate in Periodontology. While in training, Dr. Richardson remained active in organized dentistry serving as class president all four years of dental school, a student member of the dental school’s admissions committee and repre-sented the school as a liaison from the University of Florida to the Florida

National Dental Congress. In addition, Dr. Richardson received multiple lead-ership awards and honors such as being the youngest student to receive the College’s “High Research Honors” as a sophomore. Furthermore, he received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Leadership twice, American Associa-tion of Oral Biologists Award, International College of Dentists Award and the OKU Senior Ethics Award. As a resident, Dr. Richardson completed his training with leaders in the field of Periodontology and while earning his Master’s degree published an-other scientific article regarding the healing of the gum tissue around dental implants. It was during this 3 year program that he became proficient in all aspects of Periodontics with advanced training in dental implants and con-scious sedation techniques. Dr. Richardson currently owns two periodontal practices in the cities of Eustis and Maitland. In addition, he is a partner in a dental practice dedicated to the dental treatment of severely mentally and physically handicapped called Florida Special Needs Dentistry. Despite multiple work obligations, Dr. Rich-ardson volunteers regularly at the St. Luke’s Medical and Dental Clinic, has recently completed his term as President of the Lake County Dental Associa-tion and returns regularly to the University of Florida to teach as an Adjunct Courtesy Faculty for the Department of Periodontology.

Guilt is a unique emotion. It’s a cousin to shame, but not quite as self-deprecating. We often feel guilty after we take an action we know we shouldn’t (i.e. splurging on earrings), when we cause harm to someone or something (i.e. littering the environment), or when we disappoint someone (i.e. skimping on chores). And yet, is guilt a wasted emotion?

Spiritual teacher Iyania Vanzant seems to think so. In a 2012 interview with Oprah, she comments, “Guilt is a wasted emotion. The minute you find that there is something ‘wrong’ or out of alignment or out of order with what you’re thinking or doing, do something else!”

Psychologists seem to disagree on the function of this complex emotion. Some believe that guilt may keep you from repeating immoral behavior in the future. They even have a name for it: “withdrawal motivation.” Others think guilt is a purely social emotion, meant to keep us “in line” with the moral standard of our communities. This one’s called “approach motivation,” and it emphasizes a more positive emotional experience.

Vanzant seems to disagree with both of these viewpoints. She doesn’t see guilt as a productive or positive emotion such as, say, empathy or stress. Empathy can help us relate to others. Stress can help us problem-solve. But guilt? “It’s about ego,” she says. If

Vanzant doesn’t believe guilt can right our wrongs, then what can?

“Acknowledgement!” says Vanzant. “Acknowledge [what you’ve done wrong], ask for forgiveness of yourself first and then of other people if you can, and then do something to make amends. Then that will release you from the karmic tide to that action.”

No matter which theory has got it right, one truth seems to hold: whether or not you feel guilty, it’s the actions you take to rectify your wrongs that make all the difference in the world. By taking proactive steps in the right direction, we can avoid this uncomfortable emotion and say goodbye to guilt forever!

You splurge on a new pair of earrings, though you haven’t yet paid the bills. You toss the trash out of your car window, though you clearly see the “no littering” sign. You leave dirty dishes in the sink, though you know your spouse will have to do them later.

And after each action, you feel deeply guilty.

The Danger ZonesMost anxiety cases we see in the clinic come from the imbalance of heart, kidney and liver.

HEARTThe heart houses our mind or spirit in Chinese medicine, which to some degree explains the connection of the United States to the highest rates of anxiety and heart diseases in the world. Symptoms of heart imbalance include palpitations, shortness of breath, excessive sweating, absent sweating, mental restlessness, insomnia, forgetfulness, chest pain, tongue ulcer, burning urine, and/or cold hands and feet.

KIDNEYOur kidneys control water metabolism in our body, and it’s actually where our fear comes from. Fear plays an important role in anxiety symptoms. Signs of weak kidney include pain, soreness or burning sensations in the soles of the feet, lumbar area and knees, low willpower, frequent urination, incontinence, tinnitus, low energy, impotence, declining libido and nocturia.

LIVERThe liver is responsible for the free and smooth flow of Qi, which has a deep relationship with a person’s emotional state. Because the free flow of Qi is the key to our health, liver impairment can cause even more extensive symptoms than other organs. If our liver is functioning well, our emotional state will be relaxed or “free and easy”. Emotions will be freely expressed. Symptoms of an imbalanced liver include Distention and pain in the chest and hypochondriac region, moodiness, melancholy, frequent sighing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, irregular bowel, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrheal, PMS, fixed and stabbing abdominal pain, irritability, tinnitus(high pitch), temporal headache, migraine, dizziness, excessive dreams, and blurred vision.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) symptoms vary. They can include:

Constant worrying or obsession about small or large concerns

Restlessness and feeling keyed up or on edge

Fatigue

Trembling, feeling twitchy or being easily startled

Trouble sleeping

Sweating, nausea or diarrhea

“Our lives are finite and it’s important to enjoy yourself”

What led you to become a veterinary surgical oncologist?I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I was too young when I decided that to even understand how it happened, but I just know that animals were always a huge part of my life. I wanted to work with small animals like dogs and cats, and during vet school I decided that I wanted to do surgery. There’s a creativity to surgery – especially cancer surgery – that I really enjoy. During my residency, I began working with surgical oncologists and discovered how interesting that was for me. Again, there’s a lot of creativity involved and you have to think outside of the box, which really appealed to me. Plus, you work with really lovely animals that have a strong bond with their families.

How were you able to use your animal oncology experience to assist in your own

cancer diagnosis?I was able to recognize that there was a new mass in my neck and

that it was growing quickly. I do have a lot of experience with

cancer in dogs, and the mass in my neck felt exactly like the kind of thing

I’d felt on dogs. As a surgeon, my fingers are perhaps more sensitive,

so I was very aware of what was going on with my neck. Apart from that though,

I also had this gut feeling that something was wrong. That’s something I think

anyone could feel.

Isn’t it ironic that pets get thyroid cancer a lot and that’s the cancer you had, too?Oh yes, and I tackle that in the book [laughs]. As vets – and it’s dark humor – but we joke about how specialists in a certain area often catch their own disease. It’s defi nitely ironic [laughs]. It’s probably just down to chance, I don’t think there’s a real connection or reason – I’m probably just genetically predisposed to having it.

How did this experience change you? It’s given me a new perspective. I understand what people are going through with their animals because I’ve had it. It was life changing; I have a new level of empathy for both my clients and the patient. Anyone who’s diagnosed with cancer can experience this change in perspective. I stop and think, “Am I happy? Am I enjoying my life?” more than I used to. Someone who had read my book made a comment that it seems like I’m more afraid of living an unhappy life than of dying, which is true. I think cancer makes you reexamine your life and live in the moment.

What message do you hope your book sends?The message of self-advocacy. You need to either be your own advocate or have an advocate. My patients all have to have an advocate because they’re dogs and cats. But think about that. When you’re the patient, you should have someone there for you who can ask questions and help you because you’re probably really stressed at the time. If you don’t have medical knowledge, you may not ask the right questions or understand the information you’re being given.

Apart from that, live in the moment, be happy in life – our lives are fi nite and it’s important to enjoy yourself. In veterinary

medicine, we focus on quality of life over quantity, which is interesting because if you look at the human system there’s much more focus on quantity and not quality. Both professions can learn from each other.

In your book, you mentioned facing challenges in the healthcare system. Can you talk about that?Some of the challenges were associated with waiting. I waited for two and a half months from when I found the mass to when I had my fi rst surgery, and then I waited another month to get my diagnosis back. For three and a half months, I was being told I didn’t have cancer but thinking I did have cancer, which was a really challenging situation. I felt like I wasn’t being heard, and the mass was growing during that wait time, which was really hard to deal with. When I got my diagnosis, those things fi nally aligned.

What feedback have you gotten from readers?I’ve had a lot of great feedback. The feedback I hear most often is that “I laughed and cried.” The fact that it can evoke emotion in people is really wonderful. I love to know that people can laugh aloud; you need to fi nd humor, even in things that are hard. Also, something else that’s come out of this book is a message about thyroid cancer. It’s not a cancer that gets a lot of press. I’ve had two colleagues email me telling me that they found a mass in their neck and because of my book they got it worked up. One of them got it removed and afterward they found that it was an invasive thyroid cancer. He wrote me an email to say, “Thank you, you just changed my life.” That’s amazing to me.

Another really important element of negotiation is called alternatives, and it’s the answer to this question: if this negotiation

falls apart and we don’t make a deal at all, what am I going to do instead? That turns out to be where your power comes from when negotiating. If your best alternative is very good, you’re in a very strong position.

How do you determine a fair negotiation? We’re looking for outside measures of fairness. If I want to buy a house, I could say that I want to buy the house for ten dollars and they could say they want a million dollars, but neither of those deals is fair. However, if they said they wanted to sell the home for $200,000 because that’s what comparable houses are going for, that’s a way to use an outside measure of fairness. You need to fi nd measures of fairness that appeal to both sides.

What’s a barrier to a successful negotiation?

The longer I study negotiation, the more I believe that misunderstandings

are the biggest barriers to successful deals. You need to take it upon yourself to

communicate with the other side and to ensure that they really get it. Work really hard to understand them, too.

What other factors should you consider while negotiating? You should ask yourself these questions: What is our relationship within the negotiation? How can we improve that relationship? What’s our relationship above and beyond this negotiation? Is it important to me? Could I improve it? What’s the potential relationship? Could it be better and more valuable to me? Obviously, you don’t want to win the negotiation but lose the bigger, more important relationship. I have a wife, and when I out-negotiate her on, say, the restaurant we choose to eat at, did I win or did I lose?

My husband and I have this conversation all the time, so I’m going to say that you lose [laughs]. Exactly. Even though we ate where I wanted to eat, she was resentful for three weeks [laughs]. I lost because the relationship is

What does it take to be a good negotiator?Negotiation is broken into four diff erent parts, and you need to be thinking about all of those parts at once. First, good negotiators prepare – I teasingly say, “Do your homework.” You’re going to do better if you do. The second stage of negotiation is information gathering. You have a lot to learn about the other side; what are their needs and constraints? The third phase is bargaining. At this point, it’s important to think about what’s valuable to the other side that doesn’t cost you much to off er. The fourth stage is closing and commitment.

Your job in commitment is to make a deal where the other side will really keep all the promises that they made.

What’s the most important part of negotiations?The most important element of any negotiation is interests. You’re thinking about what you really want and what they really want. You know the Spice Girls song where they say, “Tell me what you want, what you really, really want?” Well my girls giggle now and think I’m a dinosaur, but you need to ask what you really, really want. There are many possible deals that combine the interests of both sides.

more important than our choice of restaurants.

How do you defi ne commitment? I try to defi ne commitment as how binding something is. Negotiation is the meet-up of many little sub-commitments. When you’re negotiating with someone and it’s not going well, and you suggest taking a break and meeting next week, and then you shake hands on it, that’s an agreement. It’s not the end of the negotiation, but you just agreed on something. As it turns out, you can build a series of smaller agreements to build trust over time as you work toward the bigger picture.

Are these skills you’re born with or are they learned?I don’t know the answer to that, but I do know that everyone can get better. You may not be a natural-born negotiator, but the better you get at negotiating the better your life will be.

When you’re not ready to walk away, how do you maintain power?That’s a good point. Knowing what you’ll do if you walk away doesn’t mean you’re actually going to walk away, but it makes you feel incredibly strong during the negotiation because you know you have that alternative. You can take more chances when you have that safety net under you.

Should you know what the other side will do if they don’t strike a deal with you, too? That’s critical. Big companies like Goldman Sachs are in a very powerful position, because if one new hire doesn’t work out, there are a hundred more eager graduates just like him. If you’re trying to negotiate with someone like that, you don’t have much power and you need to know that.

How does all of this apply to asking for a raise? It seems very relevant. Consider this: John and Jane who work for the same company go in to ask for a raise – not together, of course. John just goes in and asks, and though his boss values his work, John is told that the company doesn’t have money to give him a raise. Jane, on the other hand, does her homework. She applies to another job and gets an off er that’s more than she’s making now. Then, she goes into the offi ce and explains the situation to her boss; she would really love to stay because she loves her job but she really needs more money. What should she do about this other off er that will pay her more? She is asking the boss to help her with her “problem.” What does the boss say? If he says no, he’ll risk losing her. He gives her the raise.

What’s the best kind of attitude to have during a negotiation?It’s very situational. People tend to do better when they present themselves honestly. When you try to be dishonest about your own personal style, it doesn’t tend to work. Don’t pretend to be Donald Trump. With that said, you want to be strong. Even if you aren’t conversational, you want to get the other person talking. They’ll tell you what they really want and care about, and sometimes they’ll accidently tell you what their best alternative is, which is something you really want to know.

Any fi nal thoughts? The big trick is to understand that negotiation is joint problem solving. Divide up the deal so that everyone walks away happy with their needs met.

Tell me about your memoir As You Wish. Why did you decide to write it? People ask me all the time, “What was it like filming The Princess Bride?” I had such a fun time making the film and I wanted to share that with everyone. I wanted to write the story of it all before my memories faded.

Did you contact any of the other actors from the movie before writing the memoir? Yes. It was great because they all agreed to be part of the book. Even though Joe Layden and I have our names on the cover, we really shared it with the other actors because they contributed their experiences, too.

What’s your most cherished memory from shooting The Princess Bride? I love that we did all the sword fighting ourselves, especially since I had a broken toe at the time [laughs]. We worked really hard to make it happen, I think that was quite the accomplishment. The movie as a whole was such a joy, though.

When you were filming, did you know how popular it was going to become? No, though I thought we maybe had a shot at something because we were working with Rob Reiner, who was at the peak of his professional career at the time. Still, I don’t think any of us knew that it would become what it did. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving, because it’s passed down from generation to generation.

What did you learn while writing this memoir? I learned that writing a book is a team effort. It takes a village. You have editors and publishers and contributors – it was a real journey for me.

Let me ask you something. You’ve seen Princess Bride? What was your favorite part about it?

Honestly? Well, it’s a bit embarrassing, but I had a huge crush on you. That’s very sweet of you.

Aside from that, it’s very dreamy. I love the characters. That was a real draw. I agree. It’s a wonderful tale. It’s like an old fashioned fairy tale. Each character has a distinct personality, and the casting of the fi lm – I got to work with such incredible people. It was like rolling out the red carpet for an amazing cast. They all showed up with their A-game and it was wonderful to watch, especially for a young actor like myself.

What was casting like? Did you have to audition for the part? It was terrifying. I was fi lming a movie in Berlin at the time, and Rob Reiner and his producing partner fl ew there for what I thought was going to just be a meeting. But then he produced the script and asked me to read for him. I just thought, “Well, that’s that. I’ll never see these guys again.” I was very surprised when I got the part. It was probably the most nervous I’ve ever been.

How did you prepare yourself for the fi lm? I watched as many old pirate movies as I could. The script for The Princess Bride was really helpful, though. There’s room to play around with your character, but writer William Goldman is a very descriptive guy, so all the hard work is done for you. He conjures up in your head exactly the vision he wants. That’s the talent of the man. We all had room to play around with our roles, but the heavy lifting had been done for us.

You’ve had many diff erent roles over the years. Looking back, what are your thoughts

on those choices? Well, with Saw for instance, I thought the fi lm makers were very unique and original. In that instance, I really thought they had something great in the making, and fortunately I was right; they really did have something amazing with that fi lm.

Did you have hesitations about the content? Not at all. When I met James Wan, he showed up with a portfolio fi lled with ink and watercolor drawings of the bathroom scene and the mask and all kinds of set and costume designs. I asked who had done them, and he said “I did.” He was a real artist; he had the entire picture in his head. This guy had spent a long time agonizing over the details of his movie, and that’s usually a sign of someone who’s very dedicated to their work.

If you could go back and give your younger self advice, what would you say? I was twenty three when the fi lm The Princess Bride started, so I was still very young and also felt nervous working with all of these accomplished professionals. I would tell myself, “It’s always easier to tell the truth.”

And so the travel bug bites again. I know I’m not the only one who’s been dreaming about their toes in the sand, but funding your next big adventure is no small task. It may take time, but if you start now you’ll be packing your bags before you know it! .

You know that body language affects how others see you, but did you know that your posture, facial expression and demeanor can affect how you perceive yourself, too? Our own non-verbals influence our thoughts, feelings and physiology, and by tweaking little parts of our body language, we can actually change ourselves for the better.

Picture a powerful CEO; do you think they stand hunched with crossed arms, or tall with their hands on their hips? Confident people tend to assume “power positions,” which are poses that exude sureness and authority. Power positions take up space – legs uncrossed, chest open and hands away from the body.

According to a study by Harvard Business Professor Amy Cuddy, when people assume these power positions for even just two minutes, it actually changes their internal hormones – testosterone levels rise, while the stress hormone cortisol falls. This is significant because high testosterone levels and low cortisol levels are characteristics of confident, powerful people, and we all know that confidence and a powerful mindset leads to success.

Use this simple trick to your advantage. Before an interview, a tough phone call, a speech, an evaluation or an important workplace discussion, find a

discreet corner to assume a power pose – stand with your legs shoulder width apart, your chin up, your hands on your hips and your chest out. Think about the points you’re going to make, the confidence you want to exude and the feelings of power you want to internalize. Even if you feel like a fraud, researchers such as Cuddy have shown again and again that little body language

changes can hugely impact your own inner confidence, giving you the strength to be heard, make a difference and succeed in social situations.

As best said by Cuddy, “Don’t just fake it ‘till you make it, fake it until you become it. Do it enough until you actually become it and internalize it. Tiny tweaks can lead to big changes.”

Can you tell me a little about your background? What inspired your book?I’m a mom of three and I work full time. Before having three kids, it was easy cooking dinner for just two. When I was pregnant with our fi rst child, I decided to quit my job and stay home, which was fi ne until my daughter started preschool. I was excited to pack her fresh meals – like most parents, I started out feeling very enthusiastic. But after two to three weeks, I ran out of ideas and I didn’t know where else to turn. I started looking in kids cook books, but the recipes out there didn’t teach people

how to create great food to go. So I started looking for ways to pack healthy

meals quickly. That’s really how it all started – from a need to pack fresh, aff ordable

meals for kids that didn’t take a lot of time.

Tell me about the writing process. My cookbook is a compilation of lots of recipes

that aren’t published anywhere else. The writing process was challenging in many ways; I didn’t

want it to be like a standard cookbook where there’s just one recipe after the next. I wanted to include lots of

how-to’s and guides – I wanted it to be more of a manual than a cookbook. I hope people can use this as a reference

Laura Fuentes – chef, mom of three and creator of MOMables – tells us about her

new book and give us tips on how to pack fresh, affordable, one-of-a-

kind lunches for kids.

What are your hopes for the book? I hope it becomes something that women gift their friends. We often gift parenting books, but when our friends have kids who are entering school, I think a book like this is a great guide. I hope it’s something people will feel proud to give their friends.

Where do parents run into problems when packing lunches for their kids?We become quite complacent because our kids don’t complain. We pack the same sandwich every day for lunch even though we know that our kids need more variety than that. Also, a lot of people don’t think of lunch as super important for nutrition, but really lunch is a third of the food you’ll eat today. We should see lunch as just as important as dinner. The lack of variety is a pretty big problem for a lot of parents, which is why I included a huge variety of recipes in the cookbook while using basic ingredients. Ninety percent of the ingredients in the book are already in people’s pantries, but it’s about presenting diff erent types of meals to kids.

You’ve got a little spot in the back to help keep track of your kids’ likes and dislikes. What inspired that?I have a ton of cookbooks and I’m not afraid to write in them. I make a lot of modifi cations, and I always make note of them in the book. I know not everyone is

comfortable writing directly on the recipe, so I included the section in the back. As a parent, we keep so much in our heads, but I think it’s nice to be able to write down what works and what doesn’t work for your kids.

What are some of the best ways to get picky eaters to try new things?Introduce something that might be new with a food that’s highly favored. For example, I get a lot of parents who say that their child doesn’t eat broccoli, but they love pizza. So I chop broccoli very fi ne and mix it in with the pizza sauce. Over time, the size of my chopped broccoli has gotten bigger, so my kids are getting used to seeing it and eating it.

Did you expect the success that you’ve had? I didn’t. I started the company for myself to create a system that worked for me. I thought I could start a blog or a company to help other people who struggled with these same issues, but I never thought it would turn into a cookbook and now into follow-up book coming next year.

What’s something that you’ve struggled with? I’ve always struggled with saying no. Whether it be opportunities or playdates or family, I didn’t want to miss a thing. Over the last three years, I’ve needed to learn how to prioritize my time. I removed my email from my cellphone, so when I pick up my kids from school, I can be mom. That was a struggle and it’s something that I’m working on all the time – to be present and more focused.

It seems like you have a strong connection to your readers.

Yes, I always want to be accessible. I mostly do that through our weekly newsletter. We have 46,000 parents in our community, and every Sunday night I sit down for about an hour and write a very personal letter about things that I tried, my failures, recipes, my struggles, my successes; I’m very transparent with them. I think that’s built that relationship. It’s really a priority for me to be accessible, since as a parent we don’t always have the

help we need.

Try New Recipes Commit to trying one new recipe each week. If you’re a Food Network fan or you’re forever clipping and pinning recipes, get cooking!

Make Freezer Meals Get in the habit of doubling and freezing some of your recipes like casseroles and soups. At least once a week, you can look to the freezer for dinner and take a night off from kitchen duty.

Look at the Grocery Ads The Wednesday newspaper is fi lled with grocery ads, and major grocery chains post their sales on the internet; use these sale ads to spark dinner ideas and save money. For example, if you notice that ground beef is on sale, maybe you should make chili!

Let Your Kids Do the Meal Planning Let each child plan dinner one night per week. They’ll love planning a meal with all their favorites! Even better, if they are old enough, let them do the cooking.

Grill It just because you’re in charge of meal planning doesn’t mean you have to do all the cooking. Declare Saturday night grilling night and let your husband do the cooking!

If you dedicate just 30 minutes per week to planning meals, you’ll be able to save time by making just one grocery trip.

Looking for a delectable, healthy autumn dish? Look no further than Kalyn’s grilled sweet potato salad. It mixes pungent basil, salty feta and hearty potatoes in a dish that’s just divine.

Ingredients:• 2 large sweet potatoes, about 2

pounds total, peeled and sliced• 1/4 cup + 1/4 cup

vinaigrette dressing• Salt and fresh ground black

pepper to taste• 1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions• 2-3 tablespoons thin strips of basil• 2 teaspoons chopped

fresh thyme• 1/2 cup crumbled Feta

Instructions:• Preheat gas or charcoal barbecue

grill to medium-high heat.• Lay sweet potato slices on a

cookie sheet. Measure 1/4 cup vinaigrette and brush each side of sweet potatoes with dressing; season each side with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

• Grill the sweet potato slices 4-7 minutes per side or until fork-tender. Let slices cool. Cut into cubes. In a bowl, toss sweet potato slices with green onions, basil strips, and chopped thyme. Stir in the other 1/4 cup of vinaigrette. Gently stir in the crumbled feta, season salad with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste, and serve salad at room temperature.

When you open your fridge, your pantry and your cabinets, what do you see? Neatly stacked bins or a pile of who knows what? Staying organized isn’t easy, but clutter leads to stress, and stress leads to weight gain (that’s a fact!) Take this weekend to clear out your kitchen and clean up your life to set yourself on the path to weight loss success!

Start with your fridge. It holds most of the food you should be eating (think fresh fruits and veggies) and it’s imperative that it stays neat. Begin at the top and move your way down, clearing out your fridge completely. Wipe up old spills and throw out anything that’s spoiled. When you return everything to the fridge, put fresh produce in the front where it’s easy to grab and treat items like chocolate in the back out of sight.

Move to the pantry and cabinets next. As with the fridge, it’s best to put healthy items like nuts and whole grains in the front and processed junk in the back (or better yet, the trash!). By clearing out and organizing your cupboards, you’ll de-stress your day and streamline busy mealtimes.

Of course, organizing your fridge and pantry isn’t the end of the story. Put your effort to good use with some simple meal planning – and don’t let it stress you out! Keep things quick, use ingredients on hand, make what you know and plan for leftovers. Pull out the crockpot for a simple veggie soup or chili that’ll be ready by dinnertime, or blend up an easy smoothie with Greek yogurt and frozen fruit. When making a trip to the store, save a “restock” list in your phone with all the staples you keep on hand: milk, eggs, Greek yogurt, bananas, cucumbers and hummus, for instance. This will give you something to fall back on in a pinch, and a little preparation is all it takes to keep you from reaching for the unhealthy junk.

Stick with it! Organization is an ongoing task, but staying neat will soon become second nature. Get the family involved and don’t give up – you’ll look and feel better for it!

Healthifi ed candy cornCreate this sweet treat by fi lling individual glasses with a layer of diced pineapple, a layer of mandarin oranges and a topping of whipped cream. Sprinkle with a few real candy corn pieces for a fun Halloween snack!

Chalkboard pumpkin décorWe love chalk paint for its endless possibilities. Paint a pumpkin with black chalk paint to use as a countdown for “Days Left until Halloween!” or as the backdrop for a bewitched sign that reads “Eat, Drink and Be Scary!”

Easy “bloody” nailsDon’t spend hours painting with precision to get spooky nails. Here’s a quick and easy method to be beautifully bloody. First, paint your fi ngernails with white nail polish. Once they’re dry, sprinkle each nail with a few very small drops of bright red polish. Finally, blow forcefully through a straw directed at the wet paint to “splatter” it across your nails for a funky Halloween look.

Create a creepy pudding parfaitYou’ll need one small box of vanilla pudding, crushed Oreos, orange and yellow sprinkles and a few creepy crawlers like gummy worms and plastic spiders. Make the pudding according to package directions. Then, fi ll individual glasses with layers of each ingredient. Garnish with a few creepy crawlers – they’re perfectly petrifying!

with all that candy! I sat down with a few

parents to see how they handle the

deluge of candy left after the holiday. Read on for their solutions to this sometimes sticky situation.

“As soon as we come in from trick-or-treating I have my children immediately sort

through their candy to pick out

their favorites. The not-favorites go in a

donation pile that I take to our area food bank.

The favorites go into our kitchen candy jar. The kids are

allowed four pieces the night of trick-or-treating as a special treat. The rest is doled out little by little as special rewards throughout the fall and winter.” – Sam, father of two.

“I take an all-out approach. I personally think it’s better to just get it all out of the way in one night, so we make Halloween night an all out candy-fest. The kids are allowed to eat whatever candy they want, but only that night. Whatever is left over is tossed or given away the next

day. When I first started this, I was afraid they’d make themselves sick, but what I’ve found is that there’s usually only a few ‘favorite’ candies in the mix that they go for. The rest they’re willing to part with.” – Lisa, mother of four.

“I bargain with my kids to make a trade. The night of trick-or-treating they’re allowed to eat a few pieces. Then we take the rest and leave it in a bag near the window for the ‘candy fairy’. She comes during the night, takes the bag of candy and leaves a small toy in return. This has become a beloved tradition for my family and the kids don’t miss the candy at all once it’s gone.” – Beth, mother of two.

“I let my kids have a few pieces that night, then I collect what’s left and put it in our pantry. They’re allowed to choose from the candy stash for their ‘sweet treat’ to go in their lunch boxes or to have after dinner.” – Michelle, mother of three.

“Our family has opted to eliminate the candy problem altogether by trick-or-treating for Unicef. Instead of asking for candy, we ask for spare change at the houses we visit. Most people are glad to give a few pennies, and my son enjoys being able to collect money to donate. When we’re done, we go out for milkshakes or smoothies instead.” – Rhonda, mother of one.

Give a little heart or two, or even three, to your backyard feathered friends with this birdseed treat shaped with cookie cutters. An ideal kitchen craft to enjoy with preschoolers when the big kids are off at school, it’s also super-fun for older kids to do

with the whole family on a weekend afternoon.

Pick up a bag of birdseed, packets of unfl avored gelatin and root through your cupboards for cookie cutters, then you're all set to go.

Heart-Shaped Cookie Cutter

Birdseed Treats for the Birds

Makes 4–6 bird treats • 2 envelopes (1/4 ounce each)

unfl avored gelatin, such as Knox brand

• 1/2 cup boiling water• 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups birdseed • Baking sheet lined with

parchment or waxed paper• 4–6 heart-shaped cookie cutters,

roughly 3 inches by 4 inches. • 2 straws, cut into 3-inch pieces• String or twine.

Here's the fun:1) In a large bowl, an adult should pour the boiling water into the gelatin. Stir until dissolved, and then add 1 1/2 cups birdseed. Stir until birdseed is coated, adding more seed if mixture is too watery.

2) Meanwhile, arrange the cookie cutters on the lined baking sheet.

3) Spoon the mixture into the cookie cutters. Press down with

the back of a spoon, or compact the mixture with fi ngers using a piece of waxed paper between fi ngers and the mixture.

4) Insert a straw piece into each shape to create a hole for hanging, and leave in place.

5) Set the baking sheet of fi lled cookie cutters in the refrigerator for two hours. Remove and let stand in a dry room overnight or until hard, turning the fi lled cookie cutters occasionally.

6) Carefully pop each treat out of its cookie cutter. Remove straws, thread string or twine through the holes, and hang from a tree branch, fence or deck railing.

Tip: Extra birdseed in your bag? Take a pine cone, roll it around in peanut butter until it's completely covered, then roll it once more in birdseed. Tie a string around it and hang it outside.

Feral CatThere’s a reason it can be tough to tell the diff erence between a housecat and a feral cat – they’re the same species! Look for wild housecats roaming around the city.

Black VultureLook up in the sky or along the sides of the road for very large black birds with featherless grey-black heads. Often, black vultures fl y in wide circles in the sky as they hunt for their next meal.

shimmering necks are actually called? The rock dove, often called a pigeon, is a

common sight around Gainesville. Look for birds with pale grey bodies, black

bars on each wing and a vibrant blueish-purple neck.

Contrary to intuition, sleeping more won’t make you fat. In fact, a new study published in the journal Sleep found that people who get more Z’s actually lose weight easier. This is because sleeping more decreases the amount of control your genes have on your weight, thereby increasing the control you have on your weight.

The study looked at the sleep patterns and body mass index (BMI) of over 1,000 twins. People who slept less than seven hours a night had a higher BMI than those who slept nine hours a night, but we knew that already. What’s interesting is that, according to the study, a whopping 70 percent of the short sleepers’ body weight was controlled by their genes, while only 32 percent of the long sleepers’ weight was controlled by their genes.

So what does this mean for us? Body weight is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors that combine to

determine how much you weigh. Diet and exercise play a role, but so does your DNA. Genes are, unfortunately, out of your control, and they can influence weight by regulating bodily functions like glucose metabolism, energy use, fatty acid storage and fullness. The key is that the less sleep you get, the more influence your genes have on these functions and the less effective diet and exercise will be.

So can you just sleep 15 hours a night and watch the pounds melt away? Not exactly. It’s not recommended that you get more than nine hours of sleep a night, since this can have the reverse effect. If you want to hit that eight to nine hour sweet spot, set three alarms – one 30 minutes before bed to remind you to wind down, one at bedtime to say “lights out,” and one in the morning. If you have trouble falling asleep, try shutting off all electronics an hour before bedtime and relaxing with some nighttime yoga or a thoughtful book.

Once a practice only thought to be held by monks and hermits, meditation is now an integral part of the lives of countless successful people – Sheryl Crow, Oprah Winfrey and even Martin Scorsese have extolled the virtues of the practice, and doctors are now prescribing it alongside medications. if you've never tried meditating, or believe you have no need for it, read below to see the countless benefi ts you're missing out on!

It reduces stressMeditation is linked to decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have shown that meditation makes the body less responsive to stress hormones in general. The practice can also reduce anxiety, as it lessens the number of distracting thoughts and nagging worries that people experience.

It lowers your blood pressureAs high levels of stress can send blood pressure skyrocketing, it follows that reducing the former can lead to healthier levels of the latter. A study in the American Journal of Hypertension showed that meditation can signifi cantly lower both blood pressure and psychological distress.

It improves your immune systemMeditation increases activity in areas of the brain that control the immune system, which can signifi cantly boost your body's ability to fi ght illnesses. A study featured in Psychosomatic Medicine showed that

when given fl u shots, people who meditated for eight weeks had higher levels of antibodies produced against the virus than people who did not meditate. Mindfulness meditation has also been shown to boost natural killer cells in the elderly, giving them a greater natural resistance to diseases and tumors.

It decreases physical painMeditation has been shown to change our bodies on a genetic level. Harvard University found that people who practice relaxation techniques have a greater number of pain fi ghting genes than those who do not meditate. Similar studies at Wake Forest Baptist University have shown that meditation can reduce pain intensity by a greater percentage than morphine, and specifi c pain such as PMS symptoms can be reduced by up to 60 percent.

It helps you sleepRelaxation practices can help clear your mind; a University of Utah study showed that higher mindfulness is linked to lower

activation at night, which leads to improved sleep quality and greater ease at falling asleep. Meditation can improve sleep by either keeping stress levels under control during the day or helping you to relax your mind right before bedtime.

It increases fertilityWomen under high stress produce prolactin, cortisol and other hormones, all of which can interfere or block regular ovulation. Researchers at University of Western Australia specifi cally showed that women are signifi cantly more likely to conceive during times they are relaxed rather than times they are stressed. Lowering stress levels through meditation can help male fertility as well; a study at Trakya University in Turkey found that stress can reduce both sperm count and motility.

It saves you moneyWhen adding up all these health benefi ts, meditation can save you a signifi cant amount of money over your lifetime. Stress is the number one cause of chronic illnesses, and it is these illnesses that can fi nd you in the hospital over and over again. Research in the American Journal of Health Promotion showed that practicing meditation is linked with lower yearly doctor costs, fewer sick days from work, and lessened duration and severity of symptoms during illnesses. All these things leave you healthier, happier and with a lot more money in your pocket.

Gator MountainsStart at the bottom of the bleachers and walk all the way to the top. At fi rst glance, this exercise seems like a piece of cake. It’s just walking, right? Wrong. We promise, your glutes will be burning by the time you make it to the top. Want to take things up a notch? Put your hands behind your back so you can’t use your arms for momentum.

Up the Hill, Down the HillThis exercise utilizes the short, straight ramps inside the stadium. Start at the bottom of one ramp and sprint as fast as you can to the top; then jog down the other side as your cool down. Repeat fi ve to 10 times, and try not to stop in between sets!

CurlicuesFor this workout, start at the bottom of the twisting ramps on the north side of the stadium. The fi rst version is simple: run up, jog down, repeat. If you want to focus on your thighs, quads and glutes, try lunging up

the fi rst half of the curlicue and then running backwards up the second half of the curlicue. Don’t be surprised if you’re gasping for air at the top!

Running StadiumsAs you zig-zag up and down the stadium stairs, you’ll surely feel your heart pounding. If you’re looking for a variation on this classic Ben Hill Griffi n workout, try jumping up the stairs with both feet at a time. This doubles as a great quad and cardio workout.

DipsGrab a bench and get ready to work those arms! Start by sitting on the lowest bench rung, hands by your side, feet straight out in front of you. Raise your butt up off the bench so that your arms are supporting you. Lower yourself down until your elbows break 90 degrees, and then use the strength of your triceps to push yourself back to “start.” That’s one rep. Complete fi ve sets of 10 reps for some super strength training!

Sprint the MileRunning under the cover of the stadium is a great way to beat the Florida heat. Why not add some HIIT to your Swamp workout routine? Each time you reach a ramp, sprint up it. You can use the decline and your jog to the next ramp as your cool down – just don’t stop! Three times around the inner stadium is about a mile, so aim to complete three loops.

TagalongsThis is the perfect partner workout to banish boredom. The person who’s “it” acts as the leader of the workout, and the followers (there can be many!) must do as they do. “It” can sprint up the stairs, do some Gator Mountains, drop into 20 push-ups, lunge up the curlicues, lead the team in a backwards run … it’s up to what you feel in the moment! Halloween counts among the favorites of the fall holidays with children in America, but have you ever wondered how its unique traditions began? read on to learn more about the facts behind the fun of Halloween.

Many of the customs and traditions of Halloween were first brought to America by Irish and Scottish immigrants. Originally a Celtic celebration known as Samhain, the modern day celebration we now know as Halloween now blends both a pagan and a Christian influence.

During the festival of Samhain, ancient pagans believed that on the night of October 31st the boundaries between the dead and the living were blurred. They believed that the dead could return to life on Earth, ravaging crops and spreading disease. In an effort to protect their homes and livelihoods, these people dressed up in masks and costumes created to make them look more like the evil spirits they so feared, believing that doing so would

please the spirits and cause them to leave their belongings untouched. During the festival, the people lit large bonfires in honor of the dead. These fires attracted insects, which, in turn, attracted bats to the area. Many people today believe this is how bats came to be associated with Halloween.

During the Middle Ages, Christian missionaries working on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church began spreading the word of Christianity to the Celts. Many Celts were receptive of the message of the missionaries, yet reluctant to let go of their beloved traditions. In an effort to win converts to Christianity, Pope Gregory IV declared November 1 as “All Souls’ Day” and October 31 as “All Hallow’s Eve”. These days were meant to honor the Christian saints and pray for the souls passing between life and afterlife. The Celts were allowed to continue their Samhain traditions, with two differences: The spirits they were attempting to appease were now known as demon

spirits from Hell, and the rituals should be practiced to cast them out so that souls could peacefully enter Heaven.

The Roman Catholic religion believed that in order to enter Heaven, the soul must be prayed for after death to receive forgiveness for the sins present at the time of death. On All Hallow’s Eve, people frequently went door to door, begging for “soul cakes”. If the person residing in the home gave the beggar a soul cake, the beggar agreed to say a prayer for a soul who had once lived in the home to enter Heaven. These soul cakes were made of short bread and resembled a doughnut.

While evidence shows that this practice wasn’t seen in America, it’s easy to see the roots of modern day Trick-or-Treating. The act of begging for soul cakes was likely blended with the Celtic tradition of leaving food and drink outside the home to appease wandering spirits to create the Trick-or-Treat tradition that we know today.

Kid-Friendly FoodNot all kids are keen to noshing on chicken wings and brats from the grill, so be sure to consider what foods your kids are most likely to want when making your tailgating shopping list. Try to keep things simple and choose food with minimal prep and cleanup. Consider purchasing an extra cooler specifi cally for the kids’ goodies. Pack it with fruit slices, juice boxes, and water bottles. Then when your kids ask for a drink you can send them to their own cooler rather than searching through a sea of ice in yours.

Location, Location, LocationWhen choosing a spot for your tailgate action, be sure to keep your kids in mind. While you might love being right in the center of the party, this is likely not the best option for your kids. Try to arrive early enough to give yourself plenty of options when laying claim to your spot. Stick to outside areas where things are less likely to be as crowded, and try to get as close to a restroom as possible. If you know other families who are attending, try to stick close

together so the kids can play together without disturbing any hard core fans who might look unkindly on kids darting through their territories. If possible, try to arrange your tailgate spot to create a blocked in space where your kids can play without the danger of passing cars. Consider bringing smaller chairs and/or a blanket for the kids when they get ready to take a rest from all the fun.

Keep Them EntertainedThis doesn’t mean you have to sacrifi ce your own enjoyment, but be sure to plan for ways to keep your kids occupied. Footballs are fun, but after awhile, kids are often ready for a new diversion. Consider bringing along some simple board games (be sure to choose ones with minimal pieces that can be lost or blown away in the wind) or card games for quiet-time activities. Try making kid-sized versions of your favorite tailgate games, such as cornhole, horseshoes or washers, to really make the kids feel like they’re part of the action!

Make Them Feel IncludedHelp your kids really feel like part of the action by having them dress in team colors the day of the event. Ask them to help with loading all the supplies and have them help you set up as well. In the days leading up to the tailgate, have them create signs or banners to hang as decoration. Kids can even help you create a special “family” music playlist, including favorite songs from everyone in the family.

Just In CaseNothing spoils a great tailgate like having to leave or lose your spot due to a minor emergency. Plan ahead and be prepared so that you won’t risk ruining your day of fun! Keep an extra set of clothes for each member of the family stowed in the car so you’re ready for food spills or bathroom accidents. A well-stocked fi rst-aid kit can make easy work of skinned knees or minor injuries. With just a little extra preparation, you and your family can build wonderful tailgate memories for years to come.

From story time with therapy dog, Guy, to a hands-on LEGO Club, the Alachua County Branch Library is the perfect spot to engage children’s minds and excite their imagination.

For the artistic child, there’s M.A.P. ART, a music and arts program that educates children ages fi ve to 11 in art fundamentals while developing positive character traits, values and leadership skills. October 18 at 11 a.m.

For the young child, the library off ers preschool storytime where children ages one to fi ve join for an hour of happy stories, silly songs and fun dancing. Thursdays at 11:15 a.m.

For the crafty child, check out Alachua Crafternoons, a fun opportunity for kids and teens to share their favorite crafts, hobbies and ideas with others. Thursdays at 2 p.m.

For the shy child, the library hosts a doggie reading corner where children can pick up a book, settle onto the fl oor and read to Guy, a registered therapy dog. Guy’s happy, fun-loving personality helps bring timid readers out of their shells and encourages a love of the written word. Tuesdays at 2 p.m.

For the inventive child, the Lego Club is the place to be. Children ages fi ve to 11 join together to create challenging structures and express their creativity in the best way – with Legos! Tuesdays at 3 p.m.

Local volunteer opportunities keep parents and children connected with the community.As the summer sizzling fades and school kicks in, it may be time to find some activities to help you connect with your children amid the bustle of daily life. For Amber Young-Parker, volunteering served that purpose when she stopped working about a year ago and began looking for a community service project for her and her daughter.

“It gives you a common interest,” said Young-Parker, who, since February, has volunteered at the Alachua County Humane Society and its various events with 11-year-old Claire. “We’re all off in our own directions. Doing something like this brings you together.”

Research shows that participation in charity can also improve mental, physical and emotional health. According to the United Way, getting children involved in volunteer work can enhance their psychological, social and intellectual development. Service opportunities have also proven to boost self-esteem, teach the importance of social responsibility, shed light on possible career paths and improve interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills in kids.

“The main thing is finding something that you love and working with it,” Young-Parker said of volunteering with children. “Helping your community fight for that cause, and teaching your child to be proactive.”

With more than 300 nonprofit organizations (13 percent of which have connections to the University of Florida), Alachua County offers plenty of volunteer opportunities that can suit your family’s interests.

If you’re an animal lover:Round up the pack and help at the Alachua County Humane Society, which aims to eliminate euthanasia of cats and dogs in the community.

While children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, the organization welcomes volunteers of any age – in fact, recently a group of homeschooling parents brought some toddlers along with their school-age children when they volunteered to make dog treats, said volunteer coordinator Alane Humrich, and another mother helps in the cattery with her 5-year-old daughter.

Other volunteer activities include cleaning (such as sweeping, doing laundry and scooping litter), cuddling kittens, and walking dogs (usually reserved for older children and parents), as well as photographing adoptable animals, socializing with them or helping to train them.

If you’re a nature lover:Give your local landscape a facelift by

pitching in with Keep Alachua County Beautiful.

An affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, the local organization exists to preserve and protect the environment by minimizing waste, eliminating litter and beautifying the community.

It accepts volunteers of all ages (a 2-year-old boy and his

mother recently helped pick up trash at the entrance to a nature

park), and youth organizations such as 4-H also frequently lend a hand.

Participants help the environment by clearing litter from waterways and city, county and state roads. They are also invited to paint over graffiti, participate in various cleanup events, plant gardens and beautify landscapes. Soon the organization hopes to establish gardens for feeding the community’s underserved, as well as one at a local nursing home that will offer residents hands-on experience working in the soil.

With the help of more than 2,000 volunteers, the organization gathered 52,700 pounds of litter in the last year.

In addition to aesthetic benefits, cleaning the community can make it safer, says executive director Gina Hawkins, as litter can lead criminals to think an area is neglected and therefore an easy target. According to Hawkins, volunteering with an organization such as Keep Alachua County Beautiful can also give children a sense of pride in their community.

“It’s especially valuable when children do volunteer with parents,” Hawkins suggests, noting the example parents can set for youth. “It creates an environmental ethic.”

To volunteer, visit kacb.org/event-registration. Volunteers can sign up even if there are no existing events – coordinators can also assign areas for cleanup or interested parties can suggest events.

If you’re a literature lover:Book it to the Alachua County Library District.

Through 12 branch locations and two bookmobiles, the district aims to provide the community with free and equal access to information, entertainment and education through initiatives such as the summer reading and adult literacy programs.

Young volunteers (ages 12 and older) can tackle various tasks depending on their skill level and interest. For example, technologically inclined teens can help manage the Wii video game system, while those interested in writing can craft book

reviews to be shared with other young adults. Youth volunteers can also assist with programs and events, such as the teen advisory group or the back-to-school summer bash.

Adult volunteers, on the other hand, might help with book repairs, serve as local history aides, pitch in with special projects and events, check in and re-shelve library materials. Adults are also invited to offer homework help and literacy tutoring through a program which dedicated 176 volunteer hours in July alone to building basic literacy and language skills in the community in one-on-one and small-group settings.

While availability for volunteer slots varies by location, volunteer program specialist Erika Henderson states that it is occasionally possible to coordinate so that adults and children can volunteer at the same branch.

Volunteering at the Alachua County Library District can also teach teens about responsibility, time management, dependability, communication and diversity, as they often work with other volunteers, staff and patrons, Henderson says.

“The idea of learning how to give back, and how to interact with people outside of school, is just so important,” the program specialist emphasizes.

The humane society also coordinates a “Book Buddies” program, which allows young volunteers to read to cats. This gives children a chance to practice their reading skills and also comforts the animals and helps them bond with people, Humrich claims.

Humrich believes that volunteering at an organization like the humane society can teach children responsibility, proper pet care and the importance of helping homeless animals. Volunteerism also helps fuel the organization, which saved about 1,200 animals last year.

“Just to have the extra one-on-one time with the animals – if they’re new and scared and need socialization – it’s priceless,” Humrich said.

Economists’ note : As noted above, we prefer Median Sale Price over Average Sale Price as a summary statistic for home prices. However, Average Sale Price does have its uses—particularly when it is analyzed alongside the Median Sale Price. For one, the relative diff erence between the two statistics can provide some insight into the market for higher-end homes in an area.

Economists’ note: Closed Sales are one of the simplest—yet most important—indicators for the residential real estate market. When comparing Closed Sales across markets of diff erent sizes, we recommend using the year-over-year percent changes rather than the absolute counts. Realtors® and their clients should also be wary of month-to-month comparisons of Closed Sales because of potential seasonal eff ects.

Economists’ note: Median Days on Market is the amount of time the “middle” property selling this month was on the market. Setting goals is easy. Following through is tough. Luckily, we’ve got a few tricks to help you down the path of self-improvement.

You want to lose weight. The trick: Ignore the pounds you want to lose and instead think of the things you’d like to be able to do. Maybe you’d like to bike all the way through your favorite trails or play with your grandkids without feeling winded. Focus on these goals instead of the scale to stay motivated and feel empowered.

You want to be a better person. The trick: Get into the habit of pausing. A split second can mean the difference between you snapping at your toddler or showing patience, between you cutting another driver off or being courteous, or between you leaving with that extra $20 or pointing out the cashier’s mistake. By pausing to reflect on your actions before you make them, you’ll gain a moment of clarity that can help you do the right thing.

You want to try new things. The trick: Plan ahead and invite your friends. These simple steps are often negated in our quest to branch out, but you’re more likely to find tickets to that concert or reserve seats at that restaurant if you plan the trip in advance. Plus, when you’re friends are holding you accountable, you’re less likely to weasel out at the last minute!

You want to gain knowledge.The trick: Avoid setting “learning” time aside. While this may seem like a great way to start, it requires lots of time, concentration and dedication – none of which are very motivating. Instead, incorporate learning into your daily life. Turn on the news in the background every morning at breakfast, keep your phone’s dictionary handy when you come across a word you don’t know and ask lots of questions no matter where you are. This way, knowledge will trickle into your life a little at a time.

Follow these simple steps to make your Craigslist selling experience easy and profitable.

Prep your item. For electronics, wipe out all existing data by restoring their factory settings. Give furniture a thorough wipe down, clothes a good cleaning and all other items the once over. By doing a little work to prepare an item for sale, you’ll ensure your privacy is protected and your item looks ready to buy.

Take great pictures. Most people skip ads that don’t include a photo. Similarly, blurry, dark pictures do nothing to encourage a seller to reach out to you. Set your item in natural light, turn off the flash (it washes pictures out) and keep your hands steady to get the best shot.

Review similar postings. You can use others’ posts as a template for your ad. Look at the info that similar sellers include like furniture dimensions or computer specs, and add that info to your own ad. Keep your information straight and to the

point – bullets work wonders on Craigslist – and be thorough. The more information you include, the more likely a buyer is to show interest.

Price it right. If you paid $100 for that rug brand-new, don’t ask for $150. Do your research and be fair in your pricing. However, don’t think that you have to price your item extra low to garner interest. If you’re selling an item for hundreds of dollars less than it’s worth, people might assume the item isn’t up to snuff. To be competitive, undercut comparable listings by 15 percent or so.

Be honest. There’s no point in covering up that ding on your old car in your post – the buyer will see it before purchasing, anyway. Most Craigslist postings are for second hand items, so buyers expect a certain amount of wear. The more honest you are in your description and pricing, the more likely you are to make a sale.

Buchholz (1-2) battled Columbia, which handed GHS its other loss, through seven lead changes before coming up short 28-23. Columbia had a pair of late defensive stops, including an interception in the red zone and back-to-back sacks of BHS quarterback Jackson White to secure the victory.

Eastside opened 0-3 with losses against Buchholz (31-21), Gainesville High (49-0) and Trinity Catholic (45-21), but coach Jeff Parker hopes the tough schedule will pay off when the Rams begin District 5, Class 5A play against Belleview.

The two favorites in Eastside’s district beat up one other as Suwannee ousted Santa Fe 21-12 in Week 3. Santa Fe’s multi-talented quarterback Jemari Ford went down with a shoulder injury in the loss and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

No. 2 Upsets No. 1One of the biggest matchups of the early season ended with Dixie County defeating Trenton 48-25. An estimated crowd of 1,500 attended the battle between the top two ranked teams in Class 1A.

The Bears came out of the gates hitting on all cylinders to take a 28-7 lead before the Tigers rallied back to trim the defi cit to 28-25 early in the fourth quarter. Dixie County’s Julian Robinson rushed for two of his four touchdown in the fi nal four minutes. He fi nished with 283 rushing yards, including a 50-yarder to create the fi nal margin. A 72-yard interception return by Dixie’s James Horley also helped put the game away.

Dixie County ended Trenton’s home winning streak at 22 games with the victory. Trenton had also won 13 consecutive

game since last season’s regular season loss at Dixie County. The Tigers avenged that loss with a 17-14 victory in the state semifi nals before going on to claim the 1A state title.

Eagles Nab GatorFormer Florida Gators pitcher Corey Stump has been named pitching coach at Oak Hall. The 6-foot-5 southpaw had a career 2.35 ERA in 11 appearances at UF before a shoulder injury ended his collegiate career early. In high school, Stump was a two-time Class 2A Player of the Year after leading Lakeland Christian to its fi rst two regional appearances in the program’s history. He also helped Chet Lemon’s Juice travel ball team capture the 2010 World Wood Bat Association National Championship in 2010.

“I’m excited to be able to bring Corey on board,” said Eagles coach Chris Malphurs on the school’s website. “We were looking for a young guy who shares the program’s overall pitching philosophy. He has a wealth of knowledge and has played for some great coaches. I feel he’ll be a great addition to the program.

“Our goal remains to build a championship program. The addition of Corey Stump brings us one step closer. He’s won on some of the biggest stages out there and I think the kids will really connect well with him,”

Davis just wrapped up an eight-year professional career batting for the Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies. In 2007, he became the University of Illinois’ second highest draft selection in the program’s history when the Rockies drafted him in the third round.

After beginning their program with a road trip to Virginia and Maryland, the team will return home to host the Florida Tournament on October 19th. It features four schools — Florida, Jacksonville, Stetson and Winthrop — playing fi ve games total at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. UF opens against Stetson at 11 a.m.

SOFTBALLThe defending national champions will play an eight-game fall schedule that begins with St. Leo at 4 p.m. on Oct. 5 and Santa Fe at 8 p.m. on Oct. 10th. The home exhibition games will continue with doubleheaders against Jacksonville on Oct. 12, Georgia Highlands on Oct. 19, and Chipola on Nov. 9. Each of the doubleheaders have the fi rst pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

SOCCERFollowing a thrilling 2-1 win against No. 2 Florida State, Florida sophomore Pamela Begič was named the SEC Off ensive Player of the Week for her performance. Begič nailed an eight-yarder off of the inline at 24:12 before dishing an assist to Betsy Middleton for a 20-yard blast at 34:06 that proved to be the game winner. Begič’s goal ended a 226-minute scoreless streak against FSU. The then-No. 8 Gators’ victory snapped the Seminoles’ unbeaten record in regulation play at 38 matches.

GYMNASTICSEleven Gators were named to the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches Scholastic All-American team in late August. The reigning NCAA Champions posted a cumulative GPA of 3.5162, which is among the top 10 team GPAs in the nation.

VOLLEYBALLAfter opening the season 3-0, the No. 10 Gators dropped a pair of matches against two of the nation’s perennial powerhouses. Florida lost matches against No. 3 Texas and No. 8 Florida State before bouncing back by sweeping No. 13 San Diego and No. 6 Southern California at the USC Classic in Los Angeles. The USC win was No. 800 for legendary coach Mary Wise, making her the only active female coach to reach the mark.

Florida @ Tennessee, Oct. 4Last season: Won 31-17The Vols opened the season 2-0 before running into a roadblock week three against then-No. 4 Oklahoma, losing 34-10. This Tennessee team is much better than a year ago when it posted a 5-7 record under fi rst-year coach Butch Jones. Undeterred, Jones knows the way to turn a program around begins with recruiting, and he brought in a solid haul of top recruits for his fi rst full season

That recruiting push is already paying dividends. The successful Tennessee team has played an unprecedented 23 true

freshmen, including 22 in the season opener against Utah State. True freshman tight end Ethan Wolf even led the team in receiving in its win against Arkansas State in the second game of the season.

Despite the youth movement on both sides of the ball, the Vols are led by senior quarterback Justin Worley, who’s one of the few signal callers in the league to return with experience after a broken thumb benched him seven games into his 2013 season. He was 49 of 76 for 520 yards and fi ve touchdowns, spreading the ball between Wolf and talented receivers Josh Smith, Pig Howard and Marquez North.

Following a trip to Tuscaloosa, the road won’t get any easier for the Florida

Gators. They’ll travel to face an improved Tennessee team on Oct. 4, then return for back-to-back home games against LSU on

Oct. 11 and Missouri on Oct. 18. After three tough match-ups, the Gators have a bye week to recover and get ready for

their annual rivalry game against Georgia in Jacksonville on Nov. 1. Together, these

four games fi gure to make or break Florida’s 2014 season, so here at Flourish we decided to offer up a

preview of each matchup:

Worley was sacked five times by the Sooners while also throwing a pair of interceptions and losing a fumble. Led by Dante Fowler Jr., UF’s defensive front could have a field day.

LSU @ Florida, Oct. 11Last season: Lost 17-6This year’s Tigers are not the same team that started Florida’s seven-game losing streak last season. LSU coach Les Miles lost a lot of talent to graduation and to early entrants into the NFL Draft, but the Tigers have reloaded thanks to a steady stream of top recruits entering the program in each class.

As always, defensive coordinator John Chavis is fielding a dominant defense. Since falling behind then-No. 14 Wisconsin 24-7 in the opener, the Tigers have outscored opponents 108-0. They rallied to beat the Badgers 28-24 before recording the program’s first back-to-back shutouts since 1985 against Sam Houston State (56-0) and Louisiana-Monroe (31-0).

Chavis, who along with Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is credited with introducing the zone blitz into college football, has a deep secondary led by Tre’davious White, Jalen Collins and Rasard Robinson. Their ability to

play tight man-to-man coverage has allowed Chavis to dial up even more blitzes from cornerbacks and safeties than usual, yielding eight sacks, 13 quarterback hurries and four interceptions through the first three games as offenses are forcing plays and making mistakes under the pressure.

On the bright side, first-year starting quarterback Anthony Jennings is just getting his feet wet, so the Tiger offence hasn’t been as formidable. He was just 27 of 51 (51.9 percent) for 566 yards with five touchdowns and one interception through three games. Jennings’ top target has been Travin Dural, who led the team with 12 catches for 370 yards and four touchdowns. The offense has been relying on a running game that’s spearheaded by Kenny Hillard and Leonard Fournette, who was one of the top prep prospects a year ago and drew criticism by striking a Heisman pose after his first collegiate touchdown.

Expect LSU to try to control the clock with its running game and to keep the scoring low. The Gators could break a few explosive plays if quarterback Jeff Driskel can read blitzes and get the ball to playmakers like Demarcus Robinson, who has the talent to beat most defenders in man coverage.

Missouri @ Florida, Oct. 18Last season: Lost 36-17Following what figures to be a low-scoring affair against LSU, UF fans could be in for a shootout for homecoming as both Florida and Missouri run hurry-up offenses.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Maty Mauk marched Mizzou out to a 3-0 start and put an exclamation point on it by tying a school record with four touchdown passes in a 38-10 home win against Central Florida. Mauk excels at taking deep shots down the field, and UCF played a soft coverage to keep receivers in front of them. Still, receivers Bud Sasser, Darius White and Jimmie Hunt combined for 11 touchdowns in three games.

While the offense is putting up big numbers, the defense has been giving up big plays due to a shaky secondary which Florida should hope to capitalize on. Driskel and Gators running backs Matt Jones and Kelvin Taylor will be challenged by a solid front 7 (five sacks, four turnovers in the second half vs. UCF), but if the running backs can get to the second tier, they could break away for some big gains. Expect Florida to mix in more quick routes and screens to isolate its

playmakers in one-on-one situations against the Tigers defensive backs.

And, if fortune is fair, Missouri may be nursing the bumps and bruises of consecutive road games at South Carolina and Georgia before they make it to Gator territory.

Florida vs. Georgia (Jacksonville)Last season: Lost 23-20Many penciled Georgia in as the clear favorite to win the SEC Eastern Division after they demolished Clemson in the season opener. The Bulldogs were expected to easily roll over South Carolina, especially since the Gamecocks had just been drilled 52-28 at home against Texas A&M.

But coach Steve Spurriers’ USC team pulled off the upset, coming away with a 38-25 victory. Still, Florida will have its hands full in trying to snap Georgia’s recent stranglehold on the rivalry. The Bulldogs are powered by one of the top running backs in the country in Todd Gurley, whose 131 rushing yards weren’t quite enough to come away with a win against USC.

The recipe for victory for Spurrier was to contain Gurley. Sure, they weren’t going to stop the beast of a running back, but the Gamecocks forced Georgia quarterback Hutson Mason into making plays. He had trouble completing passes downfield and finished with just 191 yards passing.

“I’ll tell you one thing: When we had to stop them, somehow or another we stopped them,” Spurrier said after the game. “Sometimes, all you can say is it was our turn to win. We were meant to win this game – and Georgia was not.”

Muschamp has yet to beat Georgia, his alma mater. The last time Florida came out of Jacksonville with a win was a 34-31 overtime victory in coach Urban Meyer’s final UF season in 2010.

Perhaps, like with South Carolina, it will simply be Florida’s turn to beat Georgia. The Gamecocks certainly gave the Gators a blueprint for success against the Bulldogs.

Project GraceMARKETPLACEOn August 17, John Myers opened his home to welcome guests for a fundraising BBQ, with all proceeds going to Grace Marketplace. The marketplace is part of Project Grace, the Gainesville/Alachua County 10-year plan to end homelessness by providing the medical, mental and housing assistance families need to get back on their feet. Within its fi rst 15 months of existence, homelessness in the county dropped by 20 percent.

Grace Marketplace opened its doors to the needy this past April, but there is still a lot of work (and fundraising) to do. Currently, they off er clean restrooms, showers, meals, water, health, dental and mental care, as well as a break from the sweltering summer heat in their air conditioned building and outdoor pavilion of ceiling fans. Mattresses line the fl oor of the pavilion where about 28 people sleep at night, as the indoor shelter is not scheduled to open until October 1. Outside the fenced perimeter, many former Tent City residents have created a new home, enjoying access to the Marketplace until 9 p.m.

Fill what’s empty, empty what’s full, and scratch where it itches.

The goal for the indoor emergency overnight shelter, opening October 1, is to use a vacant dorm in the former Gainesville Correctional Institution while renovation continues in new bathrooms, another dorm, and the kitchen area. It is estimated that $100,000 is needed to refurnish the kitchen space alone, as the state gutted the area upon closing. With the shelter and kitchen coming online this year, the Marketplace’s full-year operational budget will fall around $750,000, so fundraisers like this are crucial for the future of not only the Marketplace, but the goal to eradicate homelessness in our county.
