SEMINOLES’ FRESHMAN WILLIAMS LEADS ACC IN FREE THROW SHOOTING PERCENTAGE Following his perfect seven of seven performance from the free throw line in Florida State’s victory over Western Carolina, Seminole freshman Patrick Williams enters Wednesday’s game against Chattanooga ranked first in the ACC in free throw shooting percentage. He is the only player ranked in the ACC’s top 15 who is perfect from the line in the first two weeks of the season. Williams was a perfect three of three in the final 2:36 of the Seminoles’ victory over the Catamounts and scored what proved to be the game-winning basket (a layup) with 45 seconds remaining to be played. His bucket at the 0:45 second mark gave Florida State a 75-74 lead – a lead the Seminoles increased following his basket. Williams made a free throw on a traditional three-point play to put the Seminoles up 73-72 with 2:36 to play then made two of two free throws with 16 seconds left in the game to put Florida State up 77-74. Exhibition 1 -- Florida State 95,Barry 66

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s exhibition opener provided a glimpse of what lies ahead for the Seminoles – both in the upcoming season and beyond. It also showed coach Leonard Hamilton a few things he’d like for his team to tighten up between now and the Seminoles’ season opener on November 6. So, in that sense, it was a near-perfect evening for FSU, which got 19 points and fi ve assists from senior Trent Forrest in a 95-66 victory over Barry University at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Forrest, the central fi gure for an FSU team that lost its top two scorers from a year ago, was one of six Seminoles to fi nish in double-fi gures. Anthony Polite added 18 – including 16 in the second half – while RaiQuan Gray (10 points) and newcomers Patrick Williams (12, nine rebounds), Nathanael Jack (10), Dominik Olejniczak (10 points, seven rebounds) and Malik Osborne (seven points, seven boards) all enjoyed productive outings.

Game 2 -- Florida State 63, Florida 51

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Devin Vassell scored 13 points, M.J. Walker added 12 and Florida State upset No. 6 Florida 63-51 on Sunday, extending its series winning streak to six. The Seminoles (1-1) avoided their fi rst 0-2 start since 2000 thanks to suff ocating defense that forced the rival Gators (1-1) into 16 turnovers and a woeful shooting performance. Florida was 14 of 50 from the fi eld, including 4 of 22 from 3-point range. A sellout crowd witnessed FSU take over late in the fi rst half and really seize control after the break. The Gators went 10 minutes with just one fi eld goal -- a dunk on an inbound play -- as Florida State pulled ahead 38-25 in the opening minutes of the second half. The ‘Noles went up by 14 on Anthony Polite’s 3-pointer with 9:31 to play. The Seminoles made 11 of their fi rst 20 shots in the second half. They also fi nished with fi ve blocked shots and eight steals.

Game 3 -- Florida State 79, Western Carolina 74

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman Patrick Williams and junior M.J. Walker each scored 18 points and Florida State rallied to top Western Carolina 79-74 in the Seminoles’ home opener. Forrest had 16 points for the Seminoles who trailed 41-24 with 3:41 left before halftime. Florida State gradually chipped away at the lead, going ahead for good with 45 seconds left in the second half as Williams made a layup. Mason Faulkner scored 21 points, including 12 in the fi rst half, as WCU took a commanding early lead. The Catamounts made 7 of 14 3-pointers in the fi rst half but cooled off and was just 2 of 9 in the second half. After Williams made a pair of free throws to give Florida State a 77-74 lead, Faulkner missed a long jumper with three seconds left as he hoped to make the shot and draw the foul in an attempt to tie it up and send the game to overtime. Florida State won its home opener, securing a 33rd straight nonconference victory at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Malik Osborne's Versatility Paying Dividends Early In His Florida State Career By Curt Weiler Tallahassee Democrat November 14, 2019 Days before his Florida State debut, Malik Osborne found out it would go a little differently than expected. The redshirt sophomore on the FSU men's basketball team had worked all preseason with the guards as he transitioned away from the center role he played in high school and in his one year at Rice before transferring to FSU. And yet, days before the Seminoles took on Pitt last Wednesday, he discovered that a calf strain to projected starting center Dominik Olejniczak would keep him out of the game. While he had worked with the guards for the majority of the preseason, his 6-foot-9 frame paired with the inexperience of true freshman center Balsa Koprivica caused a change of plans. Osborne would start at center in his FSU debut. "It was probably like a couple of days before when I heard that Dom was not gonna be able to play, so that it was like, 'Okay, you played big before at Rice and you had some experience,'" Osborne told the Democrat. "It was pretty much like I was a vet big even though I wasn't practicing as a big already so based on my prior experiences, a couple of days before, that's when I knew. I was like, okay, it's time to start game-planning at the five. "I never really knew I was gonna start and then I got the nod to start for the five so I was like you know it's not about just playing the five, it's about doing what I need to do at that position for what my team needs. It really wasn't a concern for me." Despite the late change, Osborne has found instant success in a spot he didn't expect to play for the Seminoles (1-1, 0-1 in ACC). After a pair of road games to start the season, he'll finally make his home debut Friday at 7 p.m. against Western Carolina (2-1). While Osborne transitioned away from playing the center position during his redshirt year, he's still got plenty of experience at the position. He played center in high school as well as in his only year at Rice, averaging 9.0 points and 6.5 rebounds as a true freshman for the Owls. This wealth of experience helped it all come back to him quickly when he and the Seminoles needed it most. "At this point, it's second nature. The techniques, the footwork, all that stuff, it just comes naturally at that point because I've been doing it for so long and for so many reps... Nothing really went away and I'm thankful for it because it's helped our team," Osborne said. "I'm still working on guard stuff in practice, but I'm also focused on the bigs right now because that's where immediate help and assistance is needed right now." In his debut in FSU's 63-61 loss to Pitt, Osborne's offensive impact was minimal. He scored two points on four shots. However, he made a significant impact at the other end, wrangling a game-high nine rebounds -- four more than any other Seminole -- and blocking four shots. Olejniczak was able to play in FSU's second game at Florida Sunday, but he remained limited enough that Osborne was called on to start again.

In his introduction to the FSU-UF rivalry, he made his impact felt as he finished with 10 points and played a major role in keeping SEC Preseason Player of the Year Kerry Blackshear Jr. from hitting a shot from the floor. Blackshear had 10 points, but they all came from the free-throw line. "It's just huge to show the type of upside that he has and the type of ability, the type of player that he is to be able to go in and make an impact on the position that he's never really played at Florida State," sophomore Devin Vassell told the Democrat. "I'm excited for him to just keep learning the spot because I know that once he really gets it, he's going to be a dominant force." In short time, FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton has seen significant growth from Osborne in a role no one expected him to have to play entering preseason camp. "When you are playing in our system, you get accustomed to working on your individual improvement areas, working on your game, thinking that this is what is needed for me to fit in and help our program. All of a sudden now, you lose Dominik and he's the next choice," Hamilton said. "That was a tremendous adjustment for him. That didn't come easy because just to get in there, draw fouls, he was challenged by that early. A few more practices, I thought he got a little more comfortable. Those are some areas we need to work on because we need everybody to be comfortable in whatever position we put them in in relation to what we need in a particular game." It's unclear whether FSU will ask Osborne to remain at center or return to more of a perimeter role once Olejniczak is fully healthy and ready to claim the starting center role. It doesn't much matter to Osborne. He's going to have the same approach regardless. "Everything is pretty much was the same as far as my mindset, the aggression in and just going out and being who I am and that's just like a rebounder, a hustle player and an energy guy," Osborne said. "I knew whether I was going to be a perimeter player or play in the post, that that was going to be my mindset regardless."

Florida State freshman Patrick Williams 'Scratching The Surface' Of His Potential Wayne McGahee III Tallahassee Democrat Oct. 24, 2019 Florida State's Patrick Williams isn't a typical freshman. The 6-foot-8, 225-pound forward from Charlotte, N.C. comes to Tallahassee with enormous expectations. Williams was ranked as a five-star prospect out of West Charlotte High by the 247Sports composite rankings in the 2019 class, and he's already been projected as a first round pick in a 2020 mock draft by ESPN. "He has all the tools to be a very, very special player at Florida State," FSU associate head coach Stan Jones told the Democrat. "He's just scratching the surface of what he's going to become. I think he's the youngest freshman we've ever had come in. He's from a great family and he's got he's got great character. I'll be shocked if he doesn't just continue to grow and grow and do some spectacular things during the course of the season." There's usually an adjustment period for highly-ranked prospects as they transition from high school to the college level. Being able to take plays off on the defensive end, getting the ball every time down the court, and being the vocal point for the team is something many talented high school players get used to. When they get to the college level, those things go away for most players and it can be a tough adjustment. But FSU's coaches and players all agree that's not the case with Williams. He's got a team-first mentality and doesn't expect anything to be given to him. "He is very similar in humility as Jonathan Isaac was, in the fact that he doesn't think he's good enough yet, which is a great characteristic," Jones said. "When you have that healthy fear of where you are and what you want to become, I think that escalates your growth and development. He's never come in with any premonitions of where he should be playing or how much he should be playing. He just wants to become a better player like Jonathan was. "He lets you coach him. He responds to coaching. He accepts instructions at an extremely at a high level and can give it back to you." Isaac wasn't the only comparison that Jones made for Williams. He also said that he's a lot like former FSU forward Chris Singleton, who was also a first-round pick by the Washington Wizards. He compared him to Singleton because of his ability on the defensive end of the court, though he also said Williams is further along offensively than Singleton was when he arrived at FSU. "I've put him in a category with a couple pretty good Florida State players in Chris Singleton and Jonathan Isaac and he meets all the criteria that both those guys have done while they were here," Jones said. FSU fans got their first introduction to Williams during the Seminoles' 95-66 exhibition win over Barry University. It took him a little time to find his rhythm, but after he threw down his first dunk of the game, he settled in nicely.

Page 28: FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (2-1, 0-1 ACC) VS2019 … · F1 * at Virginia Tech 4:00 p.m. ... 10 8 .556 20 14 588 Syracuse 10 8 .556 20 14 588 ... Roy Williams, North Carolina 453 . 5

Williams finished the game with 12 points, nine rebounds, and a block in just under 18 minutes of play. All five of his baskets came on dunks and he knocked down both of his free throw attempts. "We expect a lot from him," redshirt sophomore forward RaiQuan Gray said. "He's a great athlete. He has a high basketball IQ. He fits right into our system. He can run, jump, and shoot. We treat him like one of the vets so he's earned a lot of respect." His athleticism was on full display as he flew through the air on his dunks as well as his effort rebounding and blocking shots. Williams effort on the defensive end was something else that stood out about his game, but it didn't surprise his teammates. If a player doesn't give the same effort on the defensive end of the court as he does on the offensive end, then that player isn't going to see the court much under FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton. Williams has worked hard to be a good defender for the Seminoles and his efforts haven't gone unnoticed. "He does good and with his athleticism, he can you guard one through five if he had to and one through four easily," senior point guard Trent Forrest said. "He can block shots one through five and clean up the glass like probably one of the best on the team. I'll say he's probably one of our best shot blockers that we have, even with our seven footers. So just his athleticism and his ability to kind of get around the court with quick burst like he does is going to help us a lot." Williams does have things that he needs to work on, including being more self-assertive when he has the ball. That's something he's been working on during fall practice and he's already made progress in that regard. FSU knows that Williams is going to make some freshman mistakes this season. That comes with the territory no matter how talented a player is. But there's a lot of confidence that when Williams does make a mistake, he won't make it twice. "We've always kind of prided ourselves on having those kind of guys that can cover a lot of ground quickly and can cover a lot of space up high that other people can't get to and he certainly fits the mold in all those categories," Jones said. "He'll just grow in confidence offensively once he starts figuring his spots out a little bit more and realizing where he is okay making mistakes and where he's going to learn from his mistakes and not make that one again."
