ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHTMARK BROWN is an award-winning writer. His play Around the World in 80 Days has been produced around the world, from Off-Broadway to Baridhara Dhaka, Bangladesh and has been translated into Turkish. Tom Jones, his adaptation of the ribald Henry Fielding novel, received its world premiere in 2014 and has been called, “Clever, silly and highly theatrical!” His musical China – The Whole Enchilada was named Outstanding Musical of the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival. Mark’s play The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge has been called “a sequel worthy of Dickens’ approval” and “a worthy new entry into the holiday canon.” His adaptation of The Little Prince (Co-written with Paul Kiernen) set box office records at the Hippodrome Theatre and the Orlando Theatre Project. His play Poe – Deep Into That Darkness Peering (Co-written with Mark Rector) hasn’t won a thing but is a darn good play and should be produced more often. Currently Mark is working on an adaptation of the novel Don Quixote and is working with Paul Mirkovich, his collaborator on Enchilada, on a musical version of Tom Jones. Mark lives in Los Angeles and dreams of living on a chateau in France.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE“The unforeseen does not exist,” states Phileas Fogg in Jules Verne’s classic tale, Around the World in 80 Days.

Perhaps what Verne himself could not have foreseen was the incredible enduring success of his fiction. Born in 1824 in Nantes, France, Verne set out to be a lawyer like his father. However, at an early age, he decided

his ambitions lay in writing for the stage and literature. Often cited as the “Father of Science Fiction,” Verne penned such classics as 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and From the Earth to the Moon.

Yet, one of his most acclaimed works was firmly rooted in the very real possibilities afforded by the modern world. Published in 1873, Around the World in 80 Days relies on the technological innovations which had newly made the world navigable in record time by ship and rail. The completion of the Suez Canal, the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and the First Continental

Railway in America linked the world together at long last, sparking Verne to craft a novel which was an instant success. First published in serialized format, many readers took the account as factual and placing as to whether Mr. Fogg could accomplish his remarkable undertaking.

The feat itself was not unfeasible. Explorers and businessmen such as Thomas Cook and the American, William Perry Fogg, had all made trips around the world. The pioneering American journalist and social crusader, Nellie Bly, also made a famous dash across the globe in 1889. During her journey, Bly spent a spare three hours dining with Verne. The author was rooting for her to beat Fogg’s fictional record, telling her “If you do it in 79 days, I shall applaud with both hands. But 75 days? Mon dieu! That would be a miracle!” Bly made it home in 72 days.

The joy of Verne’s story relies on Fogg grappling with the many unforeseen events which complicate his

journey. Of course, Verne being French, many of the most heroic accomplishments in the story belong to the Frenchman, Passpartout rather than the “veddy British” Fogg. But at its heart, Verne offers a love story, as the unflappable Victorian gentleman falls for the majestic Indian Princess, Aouda. Verne’s story revels in the idea that the greatest exploration offered in Fogg’s journey is the exploration of his own, very human heart.

Along the way, Verne offers us colorful characters, exotic locations, elephants, gun fights, raging storms and an intriguing subplot involving a bank robbery. One may be surprised to find Fogg’s race to the finish line never mentions a hot air balloon, an inclusion first introduced in the 1956 Oscar winning film starring David Niven. So strong is the balloon’s hold on 80 Days’ history that it now adorns many covers of the novel itself.

But long before Niven lifted off in a balloon, the novel had made its way to the stage. Verne’s own 1874 adaptation, offered live elephants and a cast of over 400 actors, lasting 415 performances. Orson Welles’ grand 1946 musical adaptation with songs by Cole Porter played on Broadway for only 75 performances.

But it is Mark Brown’s stage adaptation which has conquered the world with distinction. Just as Fogg wagered on the impossible, Brown realized the glorious possibilities in crafting a vaudevillian romp in which five actors play multiple roles. Since its first performance in 2001, Brown has been routinely cited as one of the top ten most produced playwrights in America. The play itself has made its way around the world, performed in London, India, China and Turkey.

Brown’s script is an extraordinary valentine to the magic of the theatre. For Florida Rep’s production, our team of designers and actors have endeavored to bring you as theatrical a production as possible. Just as in 1872, everything on our stage is actor generated, including our addition of live music and sound effects. The greatest special effect, after all, is your imagination.

Of course, anything can happen in live theatre, and the unforeseen always exists. The one thing we couldn’t rehearse was the most important ingredient of all–the audience! We are thrilled you’ve joined us for this adventure. Now, settle in let us guide you on a fantastic journey around the world from the comfort of your chair here at Florida Rep! We

hope you’ll enjoy the ride. But, beware of stampeding elephants!
