The Success Story of Independent Films:More Distribution Channels = Higher Profits

More than half of Oscar-winning Best Pictures over the last 30 years have been independentfilms, or “indie” films. The recent success of indie films such as Moonlight, Spotlight,Birdman, The Hunger Games, The Help, The King's Speech, The Kids Are All Right, The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire and others, was reaffirmed at the 90th AcademyAwards, when the 2018 Oscar for Best Picture went to The Shape of Water, the 12th independent film to win that award in the last 13 years.

But while a few indie films win Oscars, many more are profitable because they are madewith a relatively small budget, yet bring substantial returns to investors because they aredistributed through a variety of channels. In short, there are many more ways to recoupproduction costs and realize a profit on the original investment than ever before.

Today’s enticing assortment of avenues includes traditional theatrical release (domesticand international), sales to television networks, cable and satellite systems, TV syndication,on-demand services, web streaming and more — including distribution methods yet to bedeveloped. Luckily for audiences and investors, we live in an age of constant technologicalchange and increasing demand for entertainment products.

5th Avenue Films, an independent film company that will produce, market and distributefilms, will capitalize on these opportunities by developing and producing successfulaction/relationship movies.

Florida, formerly one of filmmakers’ favorite locations, has lost its government taxincentives. But 5th Avenue Films, led by Curry Walls and Florida Film Ventures, isspearheading an effort to both bring back incentives and make independent films ina cost-effective way even without tax incentives. The return on investment of a filmthat has a worldwide audience will make the lack of an incentive that could be up to 30%of the production budget be less of an issue. An investment in a film has the potentialof a huge ROI unlike any other investment.

The film industry is changing and full of opportunity, and 5th Avenue Films is determinedto be part of the exciting future. We are a Florida-focused film company that will leadthe rebirth of film-making in the Sunshine State. In 2016, when Florida ended thetax incentives for the film-making industry, TV shows and movie sets moved out of thestate. This move took away thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollarsthat could be going to our local economy. We want to bring those jobs, money andthe art of film-making back to Florida.

“5th Avenue Films has a mission to bring movies to the screen thatcapture the many different kinds of love stories we encounter in our lives.

Relatable, exciting stories that drive emotion and cause you to discoversomething about yourself are the best films we can produce today.”

~ Curry Walls
