Push Fitness Competes for $250K GrantOakland Park, FL – Presented by Chase, Mission Main Street Grants is a program that is committed to helping small busi-ness make it big. Chase will be award-ing twelve $250,000 grants to small businesses, determined online by popu-lar vote.

Though the application period is now closed, thousands of small businesses made profiles, telling viewers why they deserve to win. One of those thousands of businesses is local gym Push Fitness.

Push Fitness is asking for the grant to fund their new program, called Poz Fitness. Developed by HIV Fitness Special-ist Peter Jackson, Poz Fitness aims to help people living with HIV/AIDS to achieve optimal health through strategic fitness programs, including a “special-ized yoga program,” according to the official site.

You can vote for Push Fitness until November 15. For more information, visit pozfitness.com and missionmain-streetgrants.com

Senator Rubio Votes Against ENDATallahassee, FL – Though the Employ-ment Non-Discrimination Act passed with a vote of 61-30, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) opposed the measure, prompting harsh criticism from Equal-ity Florida.

“It is shameful that Florida’s junior Senator Marco Rubio lacked the common

sense and the decency to support a measure that would simply ensure that all employ-ees are treated fairly,” said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida. “We hope Senator Rubio will take time to review the bill more clearly and will change his vote when the matter comes back before the Senate later this week.”

Coincidentally, Florida Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) voted in favor of the bill, after signing on as a cosponsor last week.

“Senator Nelson’s leadership on this issue is what gave this bill the momen-tum it needed to ensure passage in the days leading up to the vote,” said Smith.

Equality Florida is encouraging Florid-ians to contact Senator Rubio and tell him to vote to pass ENDA by going to www.eqfl.org/fired

Florida National Guard to Give Full Benefits to Married Gay Couples

Miami, FL – Starting this week, all married couples (including gay couples) employed by the Florida National Guard will apply for health, death and other benefits at federal facilities within the state. Florida National Guard has found a way to allow the benefits to wedded couples without violating Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage, according to the Miami Herald.

“In order to meet the state constitu-tion and meet federal intent, we moved the functions from state buildings to federal buildings and we’re in compli-ance all the way around,” said Lt. Col. James Evans, the director of public affairs for Florida National Guard. “We want to ensure that everyone is treated equally and all Florida National Guard members get their benefits in the same place.”

Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, had high praise for the measure.

“We are pleased that gay National Guard members won’t have a separate, more difficult process for getting benefits for their spouses,” said Smith. “This move ensures that the same procedure applies regardless of sexual orientation.”

According to Evans, seven National Guard facilities in Florida will process benefits.

CHARLIE CRIST ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR GOVERNOR

St. Petersburg, FL – Charlie Crist announced his Democratic can-didacy for governor in 2014 at a rally in St. Petersburg. The

former Republican is going to have a tough year ahead of him; Gov. Rick Scott’s political committee aired its first negative ad before Crist even announced his bid for his old job. When Crist took to the stage, he addressed Scott immediately.

“Governor Scott has led like this,” said Crist. “Embrace the ideo-logical fringes, take care of his friends, bully his opponents, hide from the public and the press and run from tough issues.”

Scott’s ad cites Crist’s former views compared to his current views, further branding Crist as a political chameleon.

“When the people give you the honor of being their governor, you aren’t the governor of any one party, you are the governor of all Flo-ridians,” said Crist on stage. “No matter what they say, it is not a sin to reach across the aisle. It is your obligation to work together.”

SUNSHINE STATE

A SUCCESSFUL ‘MIX’

The Mix, a networking event for South Florida businesses, was held on Wednesday evening at 13-Even. The turn-out

was higher than usual for this monthly event. Among the VIPs in the rather festive crowd, were Krishan Manners and Tom Green. 13-Even owners Nancy Goldwin and Carol Moran and staff had their hands full, but seemed to rise up to the occasion with the usual effi-ciency and charm.

Halloween is an excuse to wear whatever you want, which is usually some-thing that you wouldn’t

dare walk the streets in on any given day. A common trend is to take virtually any character, costume or idea and make it “sexy.” Straight men cross-dress, gay men cross-dress, and celebrities give their styl-ists a large chunk of money to create the ultimate costume (Heidi Klum is the reigning queen of Halloween).

Unfortunately, in addition to all

of the lazy costumes we have to deal with, offensive costumes are becom-ing quite the go-to. A couple years ago we saw the Casey Anthony costumes. This year we saw the Boston marathon victim costume. Now, a highly disturb-ing trend has made a recent comeback: blackface. While I was convinced that blackface would never really return, it’s clearly been on the rise for the past few years. This year seemed to be the worst, with Julianne Hough dressing as “Crazy Eyes” from Orange is the New Black. The actress received major backlash from her costume, eventually addressing a sloppy apology via Twitter.

During Wicked Manor, a Broward New Times photographer captured a bizarre and crude costume – blackface. The unidentified man was dressed in all pink women’s clothes, with a necklace on that read “Just Married,” accompa-nied by another man in pink, sans the blackface. The couple was spotted in

New York Grilled Cheese Co., where they began posing for photos with patrons. New Times was unable to iden-tify the couple, and chalked it up to an “interracial gay marriage thing.”

To see this in such a liberal city is disheartening to say the least. When we are fighting for equality, this is the last thing that the media needs to see. Obviously this unidentified man does not represent the gay community, but let’s face it: it’s usually always that one person that ruins things for everyone. Will there be guidelines for costumes at next year’s Wicked Manor? Proba-bly not, but why risk it for one night of recognition? Would you think it’s funny

We are a divided nation. We need all of the help that we can get. Band-ing together in times of need is crucial. Why are minorities segregating their selves when they should be uniting?

Remember: “United we stand, divided we fall.”

Lesbian Couple Sues for Marriage Equality in ColoradoBrighton, CO – Dr. Rebecca Brinkman and Margaret Burd have filed a suit for the right to wed, stating that a civil union denies them crucial rights and privileges. The couple applied for their a marriage license at the Adams County Clerk and Recorder’s office where they were handed a civil union application instead, reports ABC News. The couple refused the appli-cation and filed suit for the right to marry with attorney Ralph Ogden.

“They rejected this offer because civil unions are more akin to a business relationship than to the expression of dignity, love, respect, and commitment that married heterosexual couples enjoy because they are married,” said Ogden. “However, because Colorado refuses to allow same gender marriages, these federal benefits are denied to members of a civil union.”

Ogden argues that civil unions lack the essential rights and access to federal benefits that heterosexual couples are guaranteed.

In March 2013, the governor of Colo-rado signed a bill that allowed civil unions for same-sex couples. However, a 2006 amendment to the state’s consti-tution restricts marriage to “one man and one woman.”

Congressman Comes Out During Campaign for GovernorAugusta, ME – Maine State Representa-tive Mike Michaud came out this week, saying that being gay shouldn’t matter in whether voters pick him as their next governor. Michaud said that his oppo-nents attempted to smear him during his campaign for governor.

“I wasn’t surprised to learn about the whisper campaigns, insinuations and push-polls some of the people opposed to my candidacy have been using to raise questions about my personal life,”

Michaud wrote in a column that was published by the Bangor Daily News, the Portland Press Herald, and the Associated Press. “They want people to question whether I am gay. Allow me to save them the trouble with a simple, honest answer. ‘Yes I am. But why should it matter?”

Michaud has been a representative for six terms and is currently running for governor in 2014 against his polar oppo-site: Republican Tea Party supporter Paul LePage, who strongly opposes same-sex marriage.

Chelsea Manning Will Go to Court for Gender Procedures

Hagerstown, MD – Pvt. Chelsea Manning said she will go to the court if the military does not give her hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery, according to a letter published last week.

In the letter, Manning said attorney David E. Coombs will represent her in an attempt to obtain treatment. If the case remains unresolved, Manning will file suit in court. Coombs said that he will also represent Manning to legally change her name from Bradley to Chelsea.

Coombs told the Associated Press that he had nothing to add to Manning’s

statement. Coombs hopes the military prison will “do the right thing” so that Manning won’t have to go to court.

Manning, is serving a 35-year sentence for sentence for sending over 700,000 secret military and State Department documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks while working as an intelli-gence analyst. Her request for transgen-der treatment is apparently the first, as the military does not provide treatment for gender dysphoria.

Gender-Neutral Bathrooms Added to City-Owned Buildings in Philly

Philadelphia, PA – A new piece of legis-lature has made Philadelphia one of the most LGBT-friendly city in the world.

The legislation requires that new or renovated city-owned buildings include

gender-neutral bathroom in additional to male and female bathrooms, according to WCAU, NBC’s Philadelphia affiliate.

“My goal is for Philadelphia to be one of, if not the most, LGBT-friendly cities in the world and a leader on equality issues,” said Nutter.

The report goes on to say that the legislation also makes Philadelphia the first city to offer businesses tax credits to encourage providing transgender-specific health benefits. In addition, the legislation revises Philadelphia’s anti-discrimination law to include transgen-der people, extends decision-making rights to life partners on medical and other issues, and changes city forms and websites to offer same-sex couple options as well as a transgender option.

“This is a city that is truly respecting all its citizens,” said state Philadelphia Rep. Brian Sims. “It is because of that respect that we are indeed a first-class city and we will continue to shine.”

COVER STORY

ENDA ADVANCES IN SENATE

W ashington, D.C. – With 61 votes (and the support of President Obama), the U.S. Senate voted in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act on Monday morning.

Senators from both sides spoke in support of the legislation, which would make it illegal for employers to fire, refuse to hire, or decline to promote employees on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Following the vote (61-30), the Senate will hold a final up-or-down vote this week.

The country’s first elected openly gay senator, Tammy Bald-win (D-WI), took the floor first, asking her peers to vote in favor of ENDA.

“I realize that for some, this is not an easy vote,” said Bald-win. “I understand that for some, they may believe that it’s not good politics. But I want to say that I have a deep respect for those who choose to stand on the side of progress for our country this week. So for those that stand up this week and answer the call for courage, I can say with confidence your courage will be respected and remembered when the history of the struggle is written.”

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) was among the many who voted in favor of the bill, claiming that it’s time to move forward.

“This is not a major change to law,” said Kirk. “It’s already the law in 21 states, and I think it’s particularly appropriate for an Illinois Republican to speak on behalf of this measure, in the true spirit of Everett McKinley Dirksen and Abraham Lincoln, who gave us the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.”

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) joined Kirk in supporting the bill, saying that it provides all Americans a fair opportunity. “I’m dismayed that so many years have gone by – more than a decade – and this bill still has not become law,” said Collins. “It is time for us to enact this important leglislation.”

While no senators took to the floor to oppose the bill, Patrick Leahy (D-VT) had closing remarks for those lawmak-ers that are against it.

“So I hope my fellow senators will come together and support this important bipartisan bill without delay,” said Leahy. “And if the other body has the courage of stnading up for America, to stand up for all Americans – every single American there is – and vote for the same legislation.”

President Obama published an op-ed in the Huffington Post over the weekend, urging the Senate to pass the bill, and Monday morning, Dean Heller (R-NV) announced his support, crossing the 60-vote threshold required to prevent a filibuster.

The final vote is rumored to take place as early as Wednesday.

THURSDAY 11/7

“El Beso en la Telarana”Fort Lauderdale has always been the “anglo-gay” side of Miami, but that doesn’t man there isn’t a rich appreciation of Hispanic heritage. With the new premiere of “El Beso en la Telarana” Fort Lauderdale bridges that gap further by creat-ing a play entirely in Spanish. Written by acclaimed Argentinian writer Manuel Puig, “El Beso en la Telarana” may be better known as its film and musical incarnation Kiss of the Spiderwoman. The play revolves around the contrasting passions of two imprisoned men: the rebellious, dangerous Valentin and the effeminate, empathetic Molina. As Valentin grows angrier and more stifled by his imprison-ment and the politically unstable Argentina of the time, Molina

escapes further into the fantasy world of his flamboyant mind. At some point, these two disparate personalities forge a bond, and the men fall for each other. The play, which runs until November 16 and contains full nudity. Please be advised that this show is in-tended for an adult-only audience. For more information, visit classc-creations.com. 8 p.m. Andrews Living Arts Studio. 23 NW 5th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Brian McKnightAnd from the offensive to the, well, offensive in its inoffensive-ness. Brian McKnight, God of the romance-me-to-bed set, brings his R&B soulful love songs to the Hard Rock Live, ready to serenade a few bitter women and engagement-ring-looking gay men. A Seventh-Day Adventist, Brian McKnight has had an illustrious career spanning more than a decade of both music-making and failed talk-show cre-ating. The Brian McKnight Show in 2009 somehow never found an audience and was canceled. Persuade your boyfriend to take you to the Hard Rock tonight, and maybe a bubble bath, some cham-pagne, and a ring await you at home. 7:30 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

Tracy MorganHalloween may be over, but there is still time to attend a Werewolf Bar-Mitzvah. Tracy Morgan, bet-ter known as his alter-ego Tracy Jordan from the now defunct 30 Rock, will be performing at the Magic City Casino his signature half-vapid, half-offensive stand-up routine. Things might get messy, as has been known for the comedian at other gigs, including April of this year when an ex-pletive-ridden show tanked dur-ing the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Over 50 people walked out of that show, mutter-ing how the act was “truly awful” and “disgusting.” Two years ago, a show at Caroline’s in New York City contained a rant persuading the audience, “Don’t ever mess with women who have retarded kids.” Subsequently, various organizations complained. Let’s hope this show will be just as controversial. 8:30 p.m. Magic City Casino. 450 NW 37th Ave, Miami, 33125.

SATURDAY 11/9

Cyndi LauperAbout a decade ago, at the Coliseum Fort Lauderdale, Cyndi Lauper arrived on stage draped in an American flag—as her hit song “True Colors” continued, the American flag slowly fell, revealing a rainbow flag, and thus, Cyndi Lauper’s legendary status in the Fort Lauderdale gay lexicon was established. Since then, Cyndi has actively worked for gay rights charities on both Celebrity Apprentice and on tour a couple summers ago. She has become one of the foremost gay rights leaders—both an icon and a saint to many in the community. Her music career is nothing to be ashamed of, either, with such hits as “Shine,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” and, of course, her most vitally important single of all time, “The Goonies R Good

Enough.” 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

ExposeSaturday the 9th is really 80’s night in South Florida; Cyndi Lau-per must feel like she’s in a time-warp, again competing against this girl group led by Miami DJ and producer Lewis Martinee. Maybe you don’t know the name, but you probably know some of their greatest hits: “Seasons Change,” “Point of No Return,” and “I’ll Never Get Over You Get-ting Over Me.” Their greatest ac-complishment, though, came in 1995 when they were asked to re-cord the heart-tugging ballad “I’ll Say Goodbye for the Two of Us” for the soundtrack to the film Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home. 9 p.m. Magic City Casino. 450 NW 37th Ave, Miami, 33125.

SUNDAY 11/10

Ring of FireJohnny Cash and June Carter represent one of the greatest, longest-lasting co-dependent abusive relationships of all time. It was no wonder they died each within a year of the other. No matter, Cash’s music, both dark and heartbreaking, lives on through our public conscious-ness and this live performance featuring Grammy Award winner Lari White and Tony Award win-ner Jarrod Emick crooning some of his best tunes. 12 additional performers will offer 38 hit songs by the legendary “Man in Black.” 7:30 p.m. World Performing Arts Center at Lynn University. 3601 N. Military Trail, Boca Raton, 33431.

MONDAY 11/11

Kenny GKenny G is a cultural icon, let’s be honest. Okay, maybe he’s not exactly everyone’s favorite artist.

Yeah, there’s certainly a bunch out there who may find the jazz saxophonist to be rather, well, lame, yet there’s also a whole lot of elevators out there, and some-body’s got to create the musical score for intense, awkward trips up large buildings. The best thing about mister Kenny G: he’s got a sense of humor, as was evidenced by his appearance in Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” video and that Snickers television commercial. Mozart “Romanze”A night at the symphony only seldom happens in sunny South Florida so why not spend your Tuesday night unwinding with the child prodigy Mozart’s fa-mous Concerty for Piano No. 20 in D minor? Symphony of the Americas and pianist Alexander Kobrin present this jubilant and tender Piano Concerto with the 2nd “Romanze” movement as the climax. The concert will close

with Mozart’s famed Symphony No. 40 in G minor. Moscow born Alexander Kobrin performs with orchestras such as BBC, Warsaw, Tokyo and Belgrade. He won the Gold Prize of the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. 8:15 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

WEDNESDAY 11/13

Roman Vishniac RediscoveredPhotographer Roman Vishniac captured all of the tumult of mid-20th century Europe. Even the film Schindler’s List used his photography to model the fashions and art direction for the film. Most of his best-known work documents Eastern European Jewish life before the destruction wrought by the Holocaust. The gay-friendly Weimar Republic (Germany post-World War I) is also a focus of this exhibit, which showcases examples from 40 years of Vishniac’s work including newly discovered vintage prints, film footage and correspondence. 10 a.m. Museum of Art Fort Lau-derdale. 1 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

W e previously put out an article that focused on places in the U.S. where you could have the wedding of your dreams. Now we set our sights beyond the land

of the brave. At this point there are 16 countries that recognize same sex marriages (and you may soon be able to add two more to that list, England and Wales), allowing you to choose from locales that run the gamut from the familiar to the exotic for your ceremony and, of course, the reception. What, you were going to travel half-way around the world and not have a party?

ArgentinaBuenos Aires, Mendoza, Iguazu Falls and Patagonia are

popular locations, but check out Mendoza, Argentina’s wine region. The vineyards are a perfect environment to hold a ceremony and many of the wineries can accommo-date a reception. For more information visit argentinawi-netourism.com.

BelgiumThe Hotel Bloom in the Botanique district of Brussels,

offers banquet facilities and can provide catering for your event. There are also a number of American hotels in Brus-sels, making planning your event from home much easier. For more information, go to visitbelgium.com/gay-travel.

BrazilWhile gay marriage is not legal in all of Brazil, the state

of Rio De Janeiro has legalized same-sex marriage. Most of Rio’s landmarks and famous beaches are located in the South Zone, including a gay district known as the Bolsa (gay zone). The Copacabana Palace (copacabanapalace.com) is a gorgeous hotel overlook-ing the famous beach and has an event coordinator for your event.

CanadaOur neighbor to the north provides more options for

wedding venues than you can imagine. Montreal has a European flair, Toronto can be sophisticated and chic or down home and comfy and Vancouver has beautiful beaches and lush, green landscapes. If you prefer a woodsy feel, you’ll love Banff, in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, for more information, go to banffgayweddings.com or travelgaycanada.com.

FranceParis, the most romantic city in the world, has to be

near the top choice for a gay wedding, but you can also live out your Disney princess fantasy at one of the many

chateaux that dot the French countryside. Lesser known, but just as wonderful, is Montpellier a beautiful wedding destination on the Mediterranean. Rachel Kaplan’s company, France Wedding Planner (franceweddingplan-ner.com) welcomes same sex couples.

IcelandIf you’re looking for a wedding venue that will make

jaws drop, get married at the IceChurch in the Icehotel, which can accommodate 35–45 people. If that’s too cold for you, a summer wedding in the land of midnight sun assures you that the sun will never set on your celebration. Contact icelandweddingplanner.com for assistance

MexicoIn Mexico, same sex marriage is legal Mexico City

and the state of Quintana Roo (aka the Mayan Riviera.) Mexico City’s tourism office has a gay travel site (mexicocity.gob.mx/lgbt) that includes the U.S. based company Promesa, which offers gay wedding planning services in Mexico specifically for foreigners.

The NetherlandsYour guests can arrive by boat at The Dylan Amster-

dam (dylanamsterdam.com), on a cana in the heart of the city. The contemporary hotel has three banquets rooms, a secluded garden and a Michelin starred restaurant. You can also take advantage of Netherlands’same sex wedding laws on the island of Saba, a Dutch territory in the Caribbean (sabatourism.com). The island is laid back, so if you’re looking for wild nightlife this ain’t the place for you.

New ZealandCan you imagine flying by helicopter to the top of a

mountain or a glacier for a ceremony? Theweddingcom-pany.co.nz can take care of that for you. Or consider the

luxurious Villa Toscana (villatoscana.co.nz), on the Coro-mandel Peninsula, where they’ll arrange everything for you.

SpainIn Spain it takes at least a month to complete marriage

paperwork. So, for a foreigner it is probably not a good place to get married. If you’ve got the time though, Ibiza is muy gay. For help in planning your event, go to ibiza-spotlight.com/weddings/gay

South AfricaFor your wedding in South Africa, check out Jembisa

Safari Lodge (jembisa.com), with a chapel featuring a huge window with stunning views of the mountains.

SwedenIn Stockholm, for a touch of old world elegance and a

connection to celebrities, past and present, check out The Berns Hotel (berns.se), which can accommodate up to 1,200 guests in its largest dining room.

UruguayMontevideo has a lively nightlife scene and a grow-

ing gay community. The Esplendor Hotel (esplendor-montevideo.com),located in the heart of the arts district?, has converted an old theater into an exclusive ballroom, perfect for a wedding party.

Requirements for a marriage license vary from country to country. Most will require you both to have your birth certificate and a copy of divorce papers if you were ever previously married. In many countries it is common to require all couples to get married at a government build-ing (such as city hall), with private ceremonies conducted at a later date. A good place to check the requirements for same sex marriages in a foreign country is the web site for Immigration Equality, immigrationequality.org.

TURN BACK TIMEInexpensive Ways to Cheat Father Time

HEALTH

I can’t believe that it’s November already! Time seems to race by at a reckless and shocking pace, espe-

cially during these stressful times. Fret-ting about your job, agonizing over this crappy economy, not getting enough sleep, poor nutritional habits, etc. are just a few of the factors that can age you, lickity split. You can use botox, collagen and a top notch plastic surgeon to fight off the ravages of Father Time, but you may just go broke in the process. Result: more damn stress! This week let’s take a look at some inexpensive techniques that will help you to look and feel younger from the inside out.

Remember when your mother told you to stop scowling or your face would freeze that way? Well, she had a point. Every time you cop a facial expres-sion, tiny creases form underneath the surface of your skin; the more you do the expression, the deeper the creases. As you age and your skin loses mois-ture and elasticity, these lines turn into permanent deep grooves. Hint: so that you won’t end up looking like one of the apple trees in the Wizard of Oz, try to keep your eyes, eyebrows and forehead relaxed. Also, try sleeping on your back and avoid sleeping on your side with your face scrunched up in the pillow. Yes, more time on your back will keep you looking younger! And don’t forget the importance of moisturizing your skin at night and in the morning before you go to work.

Yo-yo, or crash diets, are a “no-no”! While it’s tempting to starve yourself or try a new gimmick to shed fat fast, such strategies can wreak havoc with your heart, cause bagging, sagging skin, and make you fatter in the long run. Eat healthy and exercise regularly starting today! Diet wisely by losing only 1-3 pounds per week and always combine a sound nutritional plan with a program of wise, consistent exercise.

Stop smoking and eating sweets. Both of these vices can cause wrinkles by speeding up the degradation of elastin and collagen, both crucial skin proteins. In addition, cigarette smoking can give you bad breath and yellow teeth. Attrac-tive, no? Try eating more fruit instead of cupcakes and brownies. Try replacing cigarettes with more sex. Great cardio!

Stress is here to stay. But when stress takes control, certain catabolic hormones, like cortisol, adrenaline and neurodrenaline, rage wildly in your body speeding up the aging process. Try deep breathing activities like Yoga and meditation, which can be done anywhere. Listen to classical music like Mozart. Masturbation is also a great stress releaser, but not recommended at your job.

A great tan is sexy, but years of sun can also cause skin to become dry and wrinkled. Use a sunscreen, a minimum of SPF-15 daily and your skin will retain its moisture get the good sun it needs.

VALENTINO’S ITALIAN CUISINE

VALENTINO’S ITALIAN CUISINE954-545-4881

427 S. FEDERAL HWY, POMPANO BEACH, FL 333062

DINING

It’s hard to believe, but a space that was once a Quizno’s is now a charming Italian restaurant. Tucked

in-between a Tijuana Flats and a Star-bucks, Valentino’s Italian Cuisine is a little hard to spot. The plaza can be overlooked as you zoom by on Fed-eral Highway, but like all good things, people eventually caught on.

As I sat down at a bar that wrapped around two chefs kneading dough, I felt like I was in a legitimate Italian piz-zeria in New York. Frank Sinatra played in the background as I perused the menu, scanning over a plethora of op-tions. The restaurant offers your classic Italian-American options: pizza, cal-zone/stromboli, hot and cold subs, salads and soups, and of course, entrees. I noticed a deliveryman com-ing and going throughout my entire meal, and I realized that Valentino’s was a staple for locals.

I ordered the Chicken Marsala ($13.95) which came with a side of pasta and salad. The waitress recom-mended the house vinaigrette for the salad, and also a nice red wine to go with my meal. My companion ordered the Fettucini Alfredo ($11.95), and went with the same salad choice. We ordered meatballs for an appetizer after someone next to me informed us that

they were delicious. A regular no doubt. While we were waiting for our food,

a man sitting across from me at the bar ordered the daily special and the waitress called him by his first name, and on the way out said “See you to-morrow!”. The regulars here were truly regulars – in some cases, daily regulars. As our dishes arrived, I realized why.

The pricing and portions trans-ported me back to a time when res-taurants weren’t affected by the reces-sion. The $14 Chicken Marsala that I ordered at Valentino’s would go for $16-17 at another restaurant, which seemed to be the case for every item on the menu. Everything was priced slightly lower than other restaurants, without compromising the portions. That’s not to say that the portions were gigantic, but they were gener-ous. Each sauce was savory and fresh, and the pasta was a perfect al dente. For desert, we split an amazingly rich Cannoli ($3.95).

The meals were delicious, and the service was great. My waitress was one of the nicest I’ve had in a while, and the chefs in front of me chatted me up while we waited for our food. With A+ service, flavorful, fresh food and a reasonable price range, it’s no wonder Valentino’s has regulars. When you go, make sure to tell them that Florida Agenda sent you.
