Improving Gut Health is an Essential Component of Pathogen Control Salmonella is more than a processing plant issue - it originates from a live production source.Salmonella control programs are multifaceted and complex. However, one of the more essential components of an effective Salmonella control program is maintaining a healthy intestinal tract.

Improving the intestinal health of birds enhances poultry performance.1,2 FloraMax-PW is a unique combination of live microorganisms, Pediococcus acidilactici and Weissella confusa. Studies have shown that these bacteria bind to mucin and intestinal epithelial cells thereby competing with pathogens for space in the gut. These bacteria have been shown to increase transepithelial electrical resistance which improves barrier function in the gut. They produce metabolites which positively alter the intestinal environment. In experimental conditions, Pediococcus acidilactici and Weissella confusa have improved the management of Salmonella.

FloraMax®-PWFloraMax-PW is a probiotic developed to support the enteric health of the bird. The two strains, Pediococcus acidilactici and Weissella confusa may make the birds less susceptible to Salmonella.3 Containing no ingredients of animal origin, the product has shown to establish a highly protective microflora within the gastrointestinal tract.

Both strains were selected for their unique ability to secure gut health through colonization in the gut leading to a barrier effect, growth inhibition of certain pathogens, and reinforcement of the GIT tight junction.

ProbioticsUsing probiotics has shown to increase the average daily weight gain, improve food conversion ratio, and improve food safety from bacterial pathogens.1 These factors have a positive impact on the poultry industry while providing safe and healthy poultry for human consumption by reducing the pathogen load of Salmonella.

How do probiotics work in chickens?Colonization of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT)

1. Lactic acid bacteria are among the first microorganisms to colonize the gastrointestinal tract of a newly hatched chick.4

2. Lactobacillus sp. dominate the upper gastrointestinal tract of chickens, including the crop, the gizzard, and the duodenum.5, 6

Mode of Action

How does Pediococcus acidilactici (P) andWeissella confusa (W) improve bird intestinal health?

P and W impact the microbiome composition2

P and W adhere to both mucus and epithelium2

P produces Lactate, W produces Acetate and Ethanol2

Probiotics

Antimicrobial substances

Pathogenic bacteria

Enterocytes

Lymphocyte

Antibodies

Modulate microbial ecosystem which increase diversity, inhibit taxon overgrowth, and favor beneficial taxa

Production of antimicrobial substances that inhibit microorganisms or prevent their reproduction2

Competition for binding sites: Probiotics occupy these so that pathogenic microorganisms cannot adhere to them

Production of lactic acid, which inhibits the growth of microorganisms and stabilizes gut flora

W increases tight junction2

Improvement of barriers: intercellular junctions are more tightly sealed

2

Lactic acid

P and W increase the height of epithelium vilosity7

Improvement of barriers: epithelium repair is accelerated

4

Probiotics stimulate the immune response leading to increased formation of antibodies8
