Welcome to Flora Gardens Primary School

ForeWord: A S NAiSmith SAyS…Welcome to Flora Gardens Primary School. My principle is very simple, at Flora Gardens we put the pupils first. Each child is unique and special and equal emphasis is given to children of all abilities; all pupils are expected to excel within our caring community school.

Our school is developing in many exciting ways. As well as the introduction of the new National Curriculum, we continue improvements on our outdoor space with the installation of a caged astro-turf area for sporting activities.

Flora Gardens is served by an experienced, enthusiastic and committed Governing body, which seeks to play an active role in school life in partnership with the teaching and support staff.

I hope this prospectus helps you gain an understanding of

how our school is organised, and to appreciate the exciting opportunities on offer to our pupils.

If you are unable to attend the scheduled open mornings, then I am always happy to meet at a time to suit you. Just call the office to arrange the time.

Parent partnership

Another very important part of our school is you, the parent! Our vision is to be part of a strong school community where we celebrate the relationships and contributions of staff, parents, Governors and children as a whole school community. This is evident through extra-curricular activities, PTA events and our parent partnerships during the school day.

As you will see, by reading the many parent and pupil stories within this prospectus, you and your child are very

important to us. We champion the link between school and parent and work very hard to involve you in every step of your child’s time here…and increase your child’s enjoyment of learning.

CAriNG StAFFThe friendly teachers, who are kind to the children and welcoming to the parents, play a big part in the success of Flora Gardens, Fatima and her husband Hatem believe. “We originally chose the school because it is close to where we live in Hammersmith and I am glad that we did because it has turned out to be such a nice school. The teachers and head teacher are lovely and make it easy for the parents to go and see them and talk to them about things,” Fatima says.

CAriNG ChildreNPaul and Miedia love the warm, friendly environment at Flora Gardens and are glad they chose the school for their children. Paul says: “They both started in the Nursery and have always been with the same children as they progressed up the school and so they have some lovely friends. The atmosphere at the school is amazing, it really feels like being part of one big family. I love the way all the kids watch out for each other and I like to see the older kids take care of the younger kids. If you see a young child crying, it is not long before a Year Six child comes along and asks them if they are all right.”

GAiNiNG KNoWledGeNoah is outgoing and confident and likes lots of different things. His Dad Paul says: “He enjoys learning and has an enquiring mind. I can see that all the children are getting a very good education at the school. Noah likes Maths, English, Art, sports and football. I’ve been on a lot of class trips when they need parent helpers and I am always impressed by the knowledge displayed by the children. We recently went to Hammersmith Library and heard a talk about the First World War. The children got to see a soldier’s uniform and experience holding a rifle. I was amazed at the questions the children were asking and kept wondering how they had got to know so much and remember it all.”

GroWiNG iN CoNFideNCeParee is quiet by nature and was very shy when

she started in Nursery. Paul says: “She used to hide behind me when the teacher came to talk to us but she’s really come out of her shell now. She used to say that nobody played with her but now when I go into the school I always see her playing with lots of other children. She has a nice group of friends, all children she’s known since starting in the Nursery. She has grown in confidence because I think the school have pushed her very gently and encouraged her to find her own voice. They are all very caring and when she’s upset about something the teachers and the other children will all look after her.”

mAKiNG muSiCPaul says Flora Gardens have encouraged both his children to become interested in a variety of activities and sports. “They both like music and have learnt to play the piano and I am pleased to say that the school have just appointed a new music teacher, which will encourage them even more. Paree does a lot of piano practice at home and enjoys the music lessons at school. She has told me that she likes talking about and playing music but she is still a bit shy when she has to play in front of the other children in assembly.”

ChildreN SAyNoah says: “i like playing with my group of friends in the playground.”

Paree says: “i like going to school each day to see my friends.”

Noah and Paree have blossomed in the cosy environment at Flora Gardens Primary SchoolPaul Ruggins and his wife Miedia live in Shepherd’s Bush with their son Noah, aged ten, and daughter Paree, aged nine.

extended curriculum: trips and visits Self-development and pastoral care

triPSOur pupils can look forward to many exciting visits to museums, places of worship, theatres or parks in the neighbouring area and central London. Year 4 pupils have swimming lessons at Latymer Upper School every week and Year 6 children spend a week away at a working farm each year.

Pupils regularly have the opportunity to win exciting, educational trips through competitions. Past competition winners have visited London Zoo and Kidzania.

We are a community school and relish our role as an institution serving our local community. The nationalities and cultures represented by individuals in our community are richly diverse. All classes, except Nursery, have regular French lessons. We learn about languages, countries and people all over the world, and about their customs and their food.

Performance visit

Each term there is at least one big concert or dramatic performance, and parents are warmly invited to attend. The children always use these opportunities, and others like Red Nose Day, to raise money for charities supporting those in need around the world.

uNiQue ANd SPeCiAlFlora Gardens Community School is an inclusive, one-form-entry school, where we believe that every child is unique and special.

mission statement

We aim to be outstanding and expect that all our pupils will acquire all the necessary skills and attitudes to enable them to:

• Excel• Be confident• Be ready to take the lead• Inspire and influence others• Be lifelong learners• Flourish

CommitmeNt to exCelleNCeWe also believe that education is about community, honesty, integrity and producing well rounded individuals who are confident, highly educated, multi-skilled and ready for their next step in life. We have a strong commitment to excellence and high quality teaching, and have high expectations for all our pupils.

houSe SyStemWe are really excited about the recent introduction of a school House system.

Every pupil in years 1-6 will be randomly placed in one of four Houses, all of which have a ‘Head of House’. Pupils will be involved in competitions to receive points for their Houses and they can also earn points individually in class through academic achievements.

Think of a subject, an activity and there will be a competition in it. House Charity competitions, House trips and activities, MasterChef, Talent competitions, as well as competitions in curriculum subjects.

The aim of the House system is for all students to be –

• Motivated• Engaged• Involved• Well-rounded• Happy• Valued

The role of the House is integral in shaping these values. By joining a House, students can develop these qualities as well as the feeling that they are part of a team and the wider school’s success.

The House system will offer pupils -

• An adult contact (either academic or pastoral) other than their form tutor.

• A different circle of peers to socially engage with.

• The opportunity to compete and be recognised by their peers.

• The opportunity to teach/learn from their peers (at an academic, social and moral level).

• The opportunity to develop their own personal skills through undertaking leadership roles or planning events

SPeCiAl eduCAtioNAl NeedSAt Flora Gardens there is a whole-school system of assessment and record keeping. Pupil attainment is tested regularly and the school has an interactive tracker system to monitor progress. Regular conferences are held between class teachers and our special needs co-ordinator (SENCO).

Access

Children with a physical disability are fully supported in accessing all parts of the school.

GiFted ANd tAleNted ChildreNWe recognise that all children are individuals with their own specific needs, gifts and talents. Children who are identified as being exceptionally able or talented, are monitored and provided with stimulating and enriching lessons appropriate to their needs.

ColleCtive WorShiPChildren engage in daily collective worship in their classroom, and demonstrate an eagerness to reflect about their own beliefs. Whole school collective worship takes place weekly, and this is led by the Headteacher.

PhySiCAl eduCAtioNAt Flora Gardens we aim to ‘inspire, motivate and enthuse’ children in Physical Education lessons through the use of the National Curriculum. By using a range of different team and individual sports, we aim to teach our pupils the importance of physical activity in day to day life. Pupils at Flora Gardens Primary School have an amazing opportunity to showcase their skills, not only in lessons, but also through the use of extra-curricular clubs and activities.

Competition with other schools

At Flora Gardens we teach our pupils the importance of teamwork. We encourage pupils to represent their school by competing against many local schools throughout the academic year, in leagues and tournaments. We have fantastic football and athletics teams!

CAriNG eArly yeArS StAFFRachael and Ali had a clear idea of the sort of school and education they wanted for their girls and are delighted to be able to say they have found it in Flora Gardens. “Everyone at the school works hard for the good of the children and the teaching they deliver is excellent,” Rachael says. “The twins attended Flora Gardens Children’s Centre aged one and two years old, before getting full time Nursery places at the school. They both loved the Early Years Nursery setting straight away. All the staff are extremely caring and nurturing towards the children and get to know the family before the children start by making a home visit.”

QuAlity FirSt teAChiNG“Aisha and Samira are both bright kids and their abilities have been acknowledged and well catered for. Their reading progress developed rapidly and their phonic knowledge is very secure. Their basic maths understanding is secure and they are being given challenging homework. I feel both girls have been well prepared for moving up to Year One. It was no surprise to me that Early Years at Flora Gardens was graded as Good by Ofsted in 2015. It really does offer superb personalisation and a great start for every child.”

lovely SettiNG“The school is surrounded by gardens and on the edge of a fabulous park. It is wonderful for a London primary school to have a setting like that,” Rachael says. “We live on the other side of the park and Ali and the girls walk across it in the mornings to get to school. We feel we are part of a local community with the school at the centre and parents are encouraged to become involved in any way they can.”

dediCAted teACherS“Everybody wants all children to succeed and be the best they possibly can be. Flora Gardens is a hidden gem, a small one form entry primary school that I would recommend to other parents. The school approached me and asked me to become a Governor because they wanted to bring in someone with a background in education. I was very pleased to accept because Flora Gardens is definitely on the up. The Head Teacher is excellent and the school is going from strength to strength,” Rachael says.

ChildreN SAyAisha says: “i like playing in the outdoor play area.”

Samira says: “i like dressing up as a disney princess.”
