The massive rescue operation carried out by numerous agencies finished on Tuesday, which leaves the Uttarakhand government with another challenging task of recovering bodies from various landslide sites and reach out with relief materials to the locals stranded in different regions of the state. 

The Uttarakhand MeT department and international weather stations have predicted heavy rains in the next 72 hours. Warnings have been issued by the department saying that the worst hit areas could be Pithoragarh and Champawat. 

Rescue operations in Pithoragarh have been slowed down due to bad weather in the region and around 800 people still have to be evacuated from Pithoragarh. 

On Tuesday, the government air dropped relief materials to 46 villages out of the total 151 villages which have been marooned by the floods. Officials who are dealing with post-disaster management said that the major challenge now is to reach out to remote areas and give them relief materials. 

The National Disaster Management Authority said that the road connectivity to 4,200 villages was broken out of which connectivity to 2,865 villages has been reinstated and 1335 villages are still to be linked. Around 2,397 houses and 194 bridges were damaged in the floods. 

According to the official data, missing people count has reached up to 3,500 to 3,700 but over 11,000 people are likely to be missing in the state. 

A United Nations agency projected that over 11,000 people have gone missing in the flood-devastated state of Uttarakhand. The National Disaster Management Authority Vice-Chairman Shashidhar Reddy agreed with the UN agency saying that over 11,000 are anticipated to be still missing in the floods and landslides.

Rescue operations of all pilgrims who were stranded in Badrinath have came to an end as all pilgrims were safely evacuated from the area.

All pilgrims in Badrinath have been evacuated and only some locals and laborers remain there and are expected to be evacuated by evening if the weather permits, said S.A. Murugesan, Chamoli District Magistrate.

Over 3,500 people still remain missing in flood-hit state of Uttarakhand. As rescue operations come to the last stage in other parts of the state, the main focus will now shift to the

rehabilitating of locals and the rebuilding of the state. In Kedarnath, the task of extracting bodies from under the debris and disposing the bodies have also

remained a major issue for the administration. The administration is also struggling to supply relief to remote parts of Uttarakhand due to poor connectivity. Choppers are being used to supply relief but they are confined to just a few areas, as food grain shortage is

reported in around 170 villages. The bridge at Lambagar over the Alaknanda River is badly damaged and will take at least 2 to 3 months to

get repaired, said Chamoli District Magistrate S.A. Murugesan, further adding that the Border Roads Organisation is working on it.

The Gaurikund-Kedar Highway still remains closed and the Yamunotri Highway is also closed from Hanumanchatti to Yamunotri therefore making it hard to provide relief to affected villages.

The Gangotri Highway in the Uttarkashi district is reported to be blocked at eight points. The Uttarakhand state is setting up rehab agency which will monitor relief works. The Uttarakhand state government is also probing allegations against private chopper operators

condemning them of pinching lakhs of rupees for rescue operations from the relatives of stranded pilgrims.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has shown concerns that severe rainfalls are due in the state from Thursday onwards.

Fifteen days have gone by since the disaster struck the state of Uttarakhand. Over one lakh people have been evacuated from the state since June 17.

Around 900 people still remain stranded in Badrinath are waiting to be evacuated. Over 3,000 people still remain missing, as authorities struggle with the task of extracting dead bodies from under loads of debris.

Almost 1,489 people were rescued from Badrinath on 30th June. Around 874 people were taken to safety by air and 615 people by road, said an Uttarakhand Government official.

The official further said that about 300 pilgrims and 600 locals still remain in Badrinath with sufficient food and medical care.

Chief Minister, Vijay Bahuguna, said that a 200 member team has been sent to both Kedarnath and Rambara along with equipment to extract the bodies from the debris and hurry up the disposal process.

M Sashidhar Reddy, Vice Chairman of National Disaster Management Authority said that rains however delayed the NDRF's plans to reach Kedarnath town as heavy lift helicopters couldn't take off with the equipments due to bad weather.

According to DIG Sanjay Gunjyal, the process of disposing bodies is going on in a slow pace due to frequently changing weather in the Kedarnath Valley.

Rescue missions are coming to an end are likely to finish by today. There still isn't any clarity over the number of people died in the calamities. The casualty toll could range from hundreds to thousands.

State Assembly Speaker, Govind Singh Kunjwal, said that the death toll figure may be more than 10,000. However, Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said that the number was inaccurate and we will never know the exact number of people who have been buried or washed away in the floods and landslides.

The roads connecting Badrinath and Rambara, Joshimath and Govindghat and Kund and Chamoli via Ukhimath and Chopta have been repaired and are open for vehicles, according to the National Disaster Management Authority.

On the other hand, roads between Guptkashi and Gaurikund plus Uttarkashi and Gangotri are still to be opened.

Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Subhash Kumar said that the state suffered a loss of Rs.700-800 crore in the floods.

As rescue operations are coming in their final stages, around 2,500 people are still stranded in Badrinath as bad weather continues to hinder rescue ops.

The tragedy seems far from over, as the depressing part of thousands of missing people still lingers on in the flood-devastated state of Uttarakhand.

As soon as the rescue operations finish, the main focus will then shift to the substantial task of finding the missing people and rehabilitation of those relocated by the calamity.

Officials say that about 1,500 roads have been washed away and over 2,000 houses and 154 bridges have been damaged due to the floods and landslides.

A Pawan Hans chopper crash landed in Harsi today, while trying to take off in the midst of heavy rains. However, no casualties have been reported this incident

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde will join Army chief General Bikram Singh and others in Dehradun to carry out a guard of honour for the 20 soldiers who died in the MI17 helicopter crash while rescuing stranded people in Uttarakhand.

Over a lakh people have been rescued in the last 13 days since floods and torrential rains ravaged the state and rescuers hope that the weather will allow them to finish operations today.

In Kedarnath, mass cremations which began on Wednesday still continued yesterday. The DNA samples of all the dead bodies have been preserved, says officials.

No estimate is there as to how many people died in Kedarnath, as many bodies are still buried under debris. Local administration has asked NDRF teams to help in recovering the bodies.

Union health ministry assures that no epidemic outbreak has been reported from any region of Uttarakhand, although some cases of diarrhea are reported in Haridwar, Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag.

Uttarakhand Rescue operations are still on as around 5,000 people are still stranded in parts of the states with hundreds still missing.

As per estimates, around 3,500 people are waiting to be rescued in Badrinath and around 500 are stranded in Harsil.

Most of the people are staying in army relief camps and have access to food and water. As the weather improved a bit yesterday, multiple agencies resumed their rescue mission in flood-

devastated state of Uttarakhand. Over 2,000 people were evacuated from Harsil and Badrinath by air and road routes in spite of rain and fog

yesterday. Around 400 people are reported to be missing; authorities don't have any clue about them. Relief and rescue operations are said to be in their final phase and are likely to be finished in the next 48

hours. The Air Force transported firewood and other material which were required for the last rites. Mass cremation of unidentified dead bodies began in Kedarnath amidst fears of an epidemic outbreak on

Wednesday. Authorities have not commented on how many bodies were cremated in the mass cremation. The National Disaster Management Authority said that the mass funeral is likely to end by Friday. Around 600 bodies were found buried in silt in and around the Kedarnath temple. Air Chief Marshal N.A.K. Browne visited flood-devastated state of Uttarakhand to boost the morale of his

men. Since June 15, around 1 lakh stranded people have been rescued from different regions of the disaster

struck state of Uttarakhand. NDMA Vice chairman, M Sashidhar Reddy, said that there is high chance of the death toll increasing. The areas of Bhatwari, Matli and Maneri have been fully evacuated. In Badrinath, three Civil Helicopters and one MI-17 are in function for rescue evacuations. More choppers

are on standby. The Indian Air Force is carrying out its rescue operations from Gauchar, which is the hub of relief and rescue

operations. 60 helicopters are in operation, ferrying people to safety and air-dropping food and additional supplies.

The state of Uttarakhand has taken the most horrible thrashing in the flash floods and landslide which have till now claimed over 880 lives. The monsoon hit the mountainous state with torrential rains on 15 June 2013. Since then virtually 90,000 people, mostly pilgrims have been rescued in the most enormous rescue operation led by the Indian military till date in the country.

Latest Developments:

Around 5000 people are still stranded in Uttarakhand as rescue operation focus on Badrinath and Harsil. Rescue and evacuation operations are getting delayed due to rains and dense fog in some areas of the state.

In a tragic helicopter crash, 20 people are feared dead. Bodies of 12 people have been found from the crash site near Gaurikund. Officials say there is a slim chance of any survivors. The chopper was returning from Kedarnath to Gauchar when it crashed. The chopper had five Air Force men, six men from Indo-Tibetan Border Police and nine personnel from National Disaster Response Force.

Army opens road from Badrinath till 2 km before Lambagarh. Fresh landslides hit the only operational road between Sonprayag and Gaurikund. Total 2403 people were evacuated on Tuesday from different areas of Uttarakhand. Around 190 survivors were spotted by UAVs, there are mostly trekkers. In Harsil, Army evacuates 253 people in 24 sorties. About 1000 more are awaiting rescue. Tokens of different colors were distributed, with green token going first. 

In Badrinath, evacuation is going on by air and combination of foot and vehicle. 120 people were airlifted in choppers. 740 people reached Joshimath by Tuesday evening. 260 people crossed Alaknanda at Lambagarh using Chopper Bridge and Burma Bridge. Around 500 people are waiting to cross over. Pilgrims are being driven from Lambagarh to Govind Ghat.

There is a panic of an epidemic outbreak in flood affected areas of Uttarakhand as hundreds of locals are reporting to medical camps complaining of fever, diarrhea and vomiting. At least 128 people have been reported sick in Ramnagar near Guptkashi in Kedarnath valley in the past two days. Three ITBP men occupied in rescue operations work in Kedarnath have also reported sick.

Most of the locals depend on natural springs for drinking water. As there are many dead bodies across the Kedarnath valley, it isn't surprising that their decomposition is causing water contamination.

Rains hits rescue operations as over 8,000 people are still stranded in various regions of Uttarakhand. Worse weather is expected as rains returned on Monday, hindering air operations and blocking roads. Rescuers could only evacuate around 1,000 people throughout the day on Monday. Weather is anticipated to get worse on today with heavy rains predicted in the state.

Helicopters could not depart for rescue operation due to rain in Dehradun and neighbouring areas. Over 8,000 people are still stuck after the monsoon flood fury led to unprecedented devastation. About 5,000 people are still to be

rescued from Badrinath, but due to bad weather not a single chopper has been able to take off from Sahasradhara helipad. However, around 1,000 people have been rescued from different areas. 

Uttarakhand could be facing another danger i.e. their overflowing dams. The Central Water Commission's reports that the water levels at Tehri and Ramganga dams are currently at 449% above normal level. With further rainfall, the gates of the dam will have to be opened to release surplus water, this could cause flood in downstream areas.

The disposing of the dead bodies is causing concern as the process is moving at a slow pace which could lead to an epidemic. The team of doctors who collected the DNA samples of the dead could not reach Augustmuni in Rudraprayag district because of heavy rainfalls. The plan to begin the last rites of the dead around the Kedarnath shrine also couldn't proceed due to rains.

This move comes due to Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi's claim that he rescued more than 15,000 people.

Home Minister advised VIPs not to visit the state as it would create difficulties in rescue and relief operations.

The Indian Railways announced that it would carry relief material for the flood-victims free of cost for 15 days from Today.

Cleared Rescue-Zone Status

Stranded people have been rescued from the following place Kedarghati, Gaurikund, Guptkashi, Ghansali, Koti Tehri and Rajakhet. Shelters are at a Sikh shrine in Govinddham; the Army relief camp in Joshimath; a relief camp at Chamoli; Kedarnath's main temple; a town between Gaurikund and Sonprayag; a night shelter in Dehradun and two night shelters at Haridwar.

Following is the status on the other zones:

Gagaria has been evacuated and no one is left in Gagaria. Around 100 people are still in Hemkund Sahib but they have enough food and other supplies In Badrinath, over 8,000 pilgrims are still stranded. Only 70 to 80 people are left in Kedarnath. Rescue operations here will finish by tomorrow NDRF rescued 347 people from Gauri Kund. 149 Sadhus remained there as they didn't want to leave. A Medical camp has been set up in Gupt Kashi. The Army is planning to airlift two bridges to Gauchar tomorrow. Thus far, 110 kilo litres of Aviation turbine fuel have been delivered for helicopters involved in rescue

operations at the air base established at Dharasu. In Haridwar, the railways are moving people and relief supplies free of cost and no one is waiting at the

railway station at Haridwar.

Road Pathways

Tawaghat (Tanakpur- Pithoraghat- Tawaghat- Ghatiabagarh road): Beyond 80 km up to Tawaghat, about 4 km of road has been breached at more than 30 places. Road has been opened for light vehicles.

Jauljibi (Jauljibi- Munsiyari road): This axis is closed due to major breaches at about 10 places. Total road breached is more than 3.5 Km.

Pithoraghat (Tanakpur- Pithoraghat- Tawaghat- Ghatiabagarh road): Beyond Pithoragarh, the road is through up to 80 km. The road between 80 km to 96 km is open for light vehicles.

Tanakpur (Tanakpur- Pithoraghat- Tawaghat- Ghatiabagarh road): The road from Tanakpur up to Pithoragarh is through for all traffic.

Munsiyari (Jauljibi- Munsiyari road): About 10 km road has been cleared, both from Jauljibi and Munsiari side. Foot track connectivity is established on most of the road portion for transportation of ration and general public.

Gupt Kashi (Gupt Kashi - Tehri Road): The access between Gupt Kashi to Tehri was also cleared.

Gangotri (Rishikesh-Dharasu- Uttarkashi -Gangotri road): Harshil to Gangotri is open for all traffic.

Harshil (Rishikesh-Dharasu- Uttarkashi -Gangotri road): Tracks have been created from Harsil to Uttar Kashi to enable people who are physically fit to walk down to Uttar Kashi and then proceed further on vehicles.

Hanuman Chatti (Delhi Rd): The ITBP team has repaired the route from Badrinath to Hanuman Chatti which is being used for foot rescue operations.

Uttarkashi (Rishikesh-Dharasu- Uttarkashi -Gangotri road): It is open for all traffic from Rishikesh to Uttarkashi.

Dharasu (Rishikesh-Dharasu- Uttarkashi -Gangotri road): Road is open for all traffic from Rishikesh to Dharasu.

Tehri (Gupt Kashi - Tehri Road): The access between Gupt Kashi to Tehri was also cleared.

Rishikesh (Rishikesh-Joshimath-Badrinath-Mana Road): Road has been opened up to km 496 (Govindghat).

Gaurikund (Rudraprayag-Gaurikund Road): Efforts are on to clear the road between 15 km to 35 km. The road from 35 km to 70 km is normally clear.

Tilwara (Tilwara - Rudra Prayag road): It is not yet restored. Operations to clear the passages are on.

Rudra Prayag (Tilwara - Rudra Prayag road): Clear between Tilwara and Rudra Prayag.

Ghatiabagarh (Tanakpur- Pithoraghat- Tawaghat- Ghatiabagarh road): Major breaches are at kilometer 82.50, 84.30, 97.42, 99.35, 101.80, 106 and 107 but foot track connectivity has been made.

Mana (Rishikesh-Joshimath-Badrinath-Mana Road): Badrinath to Mana road is clear.

Badrinath (Rishikesh-Joshimath-Badrinath-Mana Road): An airlifted foot bridge will be launched across the river Alaknanda for speedy evacuation of stranded passengers.

Joshimath (Rishikesh-Joshimath-Badrinath-Mana Road): There are major breaches beyond Govindghat. Efforts are on to make a foot track bypassing the breach area.

The worst natural disaster in the country this year, has struck the northern state of Uttarakhand as it lies in a wreck from the flash floods and landslides which occurred in the past week. There was a big loss of human live as many Pilgrims died in these flood struck places while thousands still remain stranded at different flood affected places. Thousands of people are still stuck in the state. The Met department warns of more rains to come in the coming week which could obstruct rescue operations in the flood-hit state of Uttarakhand. 

Major Flood Affected Areas

As per sources, the high impacts places which have affected by floods are Badrinath, Gaurikund, Guptkashi, Haridwar, Harsil, Kedarnath, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi. These places are in need of rescue, food, water, medical aid, fuel, communications, information centers and cleaning up of dead bodies at some places. 

The medium impact places are Dharchula, Gangotri, Garhwal, Joshimath, Junglechatti, Maneri and Tehri. These places are also in need of rescue, food, water, fuel and medical aid.

Death Count and Stranded People

The official death count in Uttarakhand on 22 June 2013 had crossed 550. Rescuers on the River Ganga at Haridwar have reported to recovered around 40 bodies of victims who were washed down by the flooded rivers on June 21, 2013. Fatalities in the floods and landslide are reported to be over 1000 with many more missing while some sources say that the death count could also rise to 5000. 

Over 70,000 people were stranded in different areas of the state due to damaged or blocked roads. Roads were badly damaged at more than 450 places, resulting in traffic jams and moreover the floods washed away many cars and other vehicles.

So far, over 80,000 people in Uttarakhand have been evacuated to safer areas and over 10,000 people are still reported to be stranded in various places. 

Reports of people been stranded in the following places are coming in; Badrinath, Bhairon Temple, Chamoli, Gauri Kund, Ghangaria, Harsil, Nagling, Pindar Glacier, Rambara, Rudraprayag, Sitapur, Sonprayag, Teejam, Tehri district, Uttarkashi and Yamunotri.

Major Rescue Operations

Rescue operations are on its way but weather being the main issue is disrupting rescue attempts. All pilgrims who were stranded at Gangotri and Kedarnath have been evacuated. The armed forces (Army, Air Force & Navy), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the National Disaster Response Force, the Border Security Force (BSF), the Public Works Department (PWD) and all the local administrations are working together in the rescue operations.  

Efforts of Armed Forces

By June 21st 2013, 10,000 soldiers and 11 helicopters were deployed by the Army. 45 naval divers were deployed by the Navy and 43 aircrafts including 36 helicopters were deployed by the Air force. Volunteers and activists of various social and political organizations were also involved in rescue operations and the management of relief centres. Helicopters were utilized to rescue stranded people, but the rough terrain and bad weather was a challenge for the rescue forces.

Relief Centres and Shelters

The Army Assistance Centres have been set up in Alakhnanda, Chamoli, Dharchula, Haridwar and Kedarnath Shrine.

Relief camps have been set up at Badrinath, Chiplakedar, Gauchar Advanced Landing Ground, Gauri Kund, Guptkashi, Harsil, Mana, Pandukeshwar, Rishikesh, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi.

bodies have decomposed. A team in Gaurikund plans to rescue the animals that got affected in the floods

Monsoon fury continues in North India, as flash floods and landslides hit the northern Indian states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Nonstop rains tattered hills, resulting in landslides and flash floods which have till now destroyed many buildings and have stranded thousands of people, including pilgrims and tourists.

The bitter weather conditions in the flood hit areas of Uttarakhand had led to the suspension of air rescue operations by the Indian Army for a short span but have been resumed now. Over a hundred people have been killed while more than 62,000 people remain stranded. Kedarnath has been destructed and would remain inaccessible for the devotees at least for next one year. 

Authorities have set up special emergency numbers to reach and rescue people who are stuck in the flood stricken areas. Following is a list of contact numbers that can be called for assistance:

Maharashtra government has announced Rs 100 crore aid for relief and rescue operations of its people that are stranded in Uttarakhand. Karnataka Government has also set up special helpline numbers and organized rescue teams to aid in relief operations.

So far about 131 people have lost their lives in flood related incidents in northern India. Death toll in the state of

Uttarakhand has reached to 102. In Uttar Pradesh, thousands of people have been relocated because of several rivers are flowing on or above danger level.

In Rudraprayag District, around 20 people are reported dead and around 73 buildings including 40 hotels are reported to have been swept away in the flood waters of the Alaknanda River.

The Kedarnath shrine is reported to be almost submerged in mud and slush. Around 50 people are reported dead in the flash floods and over 70000 pilgrims have been left stranded in the Himalayan shrines.

The officials of the Army Central Command said that nearly 8000 people are stuck in Kedarnath; around 2500 people are stranded in Hemkunt Sahib and around 8000 people are stuck in Badrinath.

The disaster management authorities said that over 27000 devotees are stranded in Chamoli; around 25000 people are stranded in Rudraprayag and nearly 10000 people are struck in Uttarkashi.

Relief and rescue operations are hindered by washed away roads and state authorities are trying their level best to provide relief work.
