Hello everyone and welcome to May. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and the NHTSA would like to remind us that, “All motorists need to safely “share the road” with motorcycles and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe. Motorcyclists are reminded to make themselves visible to other motorists.” Motorcyclists have all the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle driver on the roadway. Please remember, alcohol affects those skills essential to riding a motorcycle - balance and coordination. So, it plays a particularly big role in motorcycle fatalities. Please keep it safe out there and ride sober, because we want to see each and every one of you at our meetings on the second Monday of each month. IF not there, please support our events and our sponsor, as well. Thank you all for your membership and keeping a positive image of our Chapter. Remember to wear your Chapter gear with pride and continue to support motorcycle riders everywhere. Hello everyone and welcome to May.

May is Motorcycle Awareness Month and the NHTSA would like to remind us that, “All motorists need to safely “share the road” with motorcycles and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe. Motorcyclists are reminded to make themselves visible to other motorists.”

Motorcyclists have all the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle driver on the roadway.

Please remember, alcohol affects those skills essential to riding a motorcycle - balance and coordination. So, it plays a particularly big role in motorcycle fatalities. Please keep it safe out there and ride sober, because we want to see each and every one of you at our meetings on the second Monday of each month. 2 FLINT HILLS CHAPTER #1508 MAY 2016 MAY 2016 FLINT HILLS CHAPTER #1508 3

The May meeting of the KS Flint Hills HOG Chapter was called to order at 7 pm by Director Don R at City Cycle Sales on May 9th, 2016. After thanking those that braved the weather to attend the meeting, a time of remembrance for our fallen was encouraged, along with anyone else needing special thoughts directed their way. This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Birthdays for May include Larry L—15th and Chuck F on the 26th. Tim & Val G have an anniversary on the 20th, Monty & Ruth P on

the 27th, Kevin & Karen C on the 6th, and Don forgot, but he and Linda have their 48th anniversary on the 11th!

Visitors were Mike & Alanna L, who ride a Road Glide Ultra. Welcome!

Don shared some information on the Oz Motorcycle Museum in Augusta, Kansas, and was going to find out more about it and report back.

Old Business: There was a good turn-out for Scootin’ America when he was in Junction City. Adam Sandoval and his dog, Scooter, are touring the US raising money for veteran’s children. You can follow him online.

RFTW update: Don will take the memorial wheel to Mary’s to get the flowers done. Watch for emails on where to report to help with the flags.

The MDA fund-raising coordinator for Eastern Kansas, Jessica Thompson, was present at the meeting. She wanted to thank us in advance for our participation and explain where the money goes. The money we raise will go to local families. There are approximately 1200 families in Eastern Kansas. The money helps send kids to summer camp. $500 is given for repairs towards wheelchairs, etc. They also have a loaner program if a child needs some type of equipment temporarily, they can use the loaner program instead of purchasing. Donations can be made on the website or the MDA Facebook page that has been set up for our chapter. She has confirmed two tickets to a Royals game and something from the Chiefs that will be donated to our event.

New Business: Bryan S is working on a ride. He always makes it interesting and it will probably be a full day, watch your email for more details.

Officer Reports:Director-Don R—Passed out chapter tshirts and some patches. Not all of the patches came in, talk to Scott to pick up those that weren’t at the meeting.

Assistant Director-Kirk M—Absent—Deb A took the count for Tyme Out.

Treasurer-Sue G—Absent—Claudia P gave the account balances.

Secretary-Vonda C—Absent—Deb A took minutes—thank-you very much!! (Also, the MDA insurance application has been sent in.)

Activities Director-Amber S—The event is coming together, but could use more raffle prizes/donations. Contact her if you can help.

Ladies of Harley-Claudia P—She led a ride to Solomon for a Saturday lunch.

The Wednesday dinner rides will start up again, weather permitting, watch your email inbox.

She will need volunteers to hand out the zipper pulls and wrist bands at RFTW.

She is putting together two baskets for the MDA event, one will be a Movie basket, and one a Car Wash basket. There is a sign up sheet for people to donate supplies to go in them. Please drop off items by the 25th of May so they can be assembled. So far, she has 2 movie passes, popcorn coupons, and car wash vouchers.

Road Captain-Dan H—Be careful not to over-communicate. People will stop paying

Posted on April 23, 2014. See more of Jeff’s blog at http://jmadog.wordpress.com/If you could have heard the song playing in my helmet on my rainy ride to work this morning, it would have sounded like a broken record skipping along repeating the same verse over and over. All too often we bikers get something stuck in that helmet of ours and it takes miles to shake it loose. I know it’s not that unusual to be riding down the road taking in the sites and humming a tune, but do we always get to pick the tune? Is there some deeper reason a lyric or song gets stuck in our head? Thesong stuck in my head this morning was Gary Allan’s “Every Storm,” and not just because I was ridinginto the rain. But when you think about it, every storm will run out of rain. Just not soon enough for a

biker.

Being the avid motorcyclist, I’m always prepared for days like this, and when the weatherman talks percentages for rain, he really should mention the odds. Like your odds of rain in comparison to not having a rain suit with you. Your odds of ever seeing rain go down considerably after investing in a quality rain suit. Much like the odds of running out of gas near a gas station. This will always happen at the furthest point from civilization as possible.

Just like every song you hear, there are deeper meanings involved. It’s always up to the listener how words will be translated and how it will apply to you specifically, and to me this song is all about how vulnerable we are in this world and as life sets you back, it’s a matter of holding your head up knowing there are better days ahead. We can’t live our life waiting for the weather to get better; instead, we must go out in whatever weather is surrounding us and push through it. Some days it feels like you can’t win as the storm rages around you, but this storm, like the storms before it, will end and the sun will come out again. Very important words for a guy who rides a motorcycle.

As random as the weather can be, we can also be surprised by the winds of change as our lives take turns unexpectedly. We should always know this is temporary and even if there is damage and destruction surrounding us after the storm we will see the sun again. We don’t forget, we just move past. The lyric that stands out to me in this song is how we all have thorns. Below the surface of something as beautiful as the rose, you may experience a little pain. We all experience a few thorns over the course of our lifetime, but it’s the beauty of the rose we remember – not the pain of a thorn or two.

I’m a fan of Gary Allan. From the surface his music is a little dark and for good reason. To know where this darkness comes from is important to understand the emotion which comes through in every word he sings. And with that I was humming along with the words silently being sung in my head. I don’t mind riding in the rain as some of my most memorable rides happened on days just like this. I wonder what song will be playing in my head on the ride home…

Dan J had a “what is it” for the group. It was an Ice Saw. Mike L guessed it and won raspberry syrup.

Claudia P won the 50/50 and split a total of $40. Randy C won the door prize.

There were no Bozo nominees (even though Don forgot about his anniversary or how many years they’d been married) so Bozo remains with Andy W for another month.

The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be Monday, June 13th, at 7 pm at City Cycle Sales.

Another month has passed and another one has started.

Last month we had a customer bike show with a great turnout and would like to thank you all for coming out and manning the burger bar.

We also had Scootin America in on April 23 and it was great to meet Adam and Scooter on this great charity ride. They spent a couple of days in town while we did some work on his bike and the bus. These were two great events. I would like to say THANK YOU for your support.

Run for the Wall will be here on May 22 and hope you can all come out and support this as the riders come into Junction City on their way to Washington DC.

We are selling tickets to raise money for MDA. You ask, what are the tickets for? KRock donated 4 Kansas City Royals tickets, a parking pass, and MLB autographed baseball signed by Kelvin Herrera. These are voucher tickets, so you get to pick your game. These tickets will sell for $1 each or 6 for $5. If you would like to sell them, come in and see me. I also have flyers for this. MDA is just around the corner so come together and raise lots of money for MDA.

Have fun and ride safe.
