COAST GUARD HH 65 RESCUE DEMONSTRATION

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a military branch of the United States involved in maritime law, mariner assistance, and search and rescue, among other duties of coast guards elsewhere. As one of the seven uniformed services of the United States, and the smallest armed service of the United States, its stated mission is to protect the public, the environment, and the United States economic and security interests in any maritime region in which those interests may be at risk, including international waters and America's coasts, ports, and inland waterways.USCG has a broad and important role in homeland security, law enforcement, search and rescue, marine environmental pollution response, and the maintenance of river, intracoastal and offshore aids to navigation (ATON). It also lays claim to being the United States' oldest continuous seagoing service. The United States Coast Guard has about 40,150 men and women on active duty.

ACE MAKER T-33

On June 23, 1943 General Hap Arnold approved a letter contract forLockheed to build the XP-80. The first XP-80, nicknamed Lulubelle, was built in the security of a temporary structure thrown together in 10 days from old engine packing crates. An entire machine shop was purchased so that the tools needed to build Lulubelle would notbe taken away from the Lockheed assembly line currently in wartimeproduction. 123 men, 23 engineers and 105 shop men worked 10 hours a day, 6 days a week to build the first XP-80. The head designer was non other than the famed Clarence L. "Kelly" Johnson. On January 8, 1944, just 203 days after the contract was signed the XP-80 lifted off the dry lake bed with Milo Burcham at the controls. Lulubelle flew! Top speed was 502 mph.

The Air corps wanted it and many more but de Havilland could not deliver the engines needed. General Electric proposed that Lockheed use their refined "Whittle" engine called the I-40. But due to it's larger size, Lockheed would have to build and almost entirely new airframe. Lockheed built the newairframe as the XP-80A, and Tony LeVier test flew it on June 10, 1944. With 1600 lbs. more thrust and a slick new gray paint job, the XP-80A flew at 561 mph.

Army Air Corps did two things - put the P-80A into full production, and sent two YP-80As to Great Britain and two more to Italy for the purpose of combat testing and to build the sagging moral of bomber crews that faced the German Jet threat every day from the ME262. Both aircraft sent to England suffered problems - one being totally destroyed and the other being fitted with a Rolls-Royce engine. The two sent to Italy performed well. They did get in a few combat missions, but VE day closed out any chance of their meeting the vaunted German Jets. Army Air Corps ordered 4390 F-80As.

The P-80A was essentially the same aircraft as the YP-80A. Dive brakes and boundary layer bleed ducts had now been installed and the armament bay redesigned. The GE I-40, now designated the J-33 was replaced by the Allison-built J-33-9/11, and later F-80A-5s by the J-33-17.

TF-80C/T-33ALockheed pushed the Army Air Corps for a jet trainer version but the Air Corps saw no need for such an aircraft and they didn't want to "waste" any fighter airframes. The methods for training jet pilots in 1947 was 180 hours in the T-6, 50 hours in P-51 Mustangs, and about 25 hours in a "captive" P-80.Finally in January 1948 a cost-conscious Air Force awarded a contract for 20 TF-80C jet trainers and the designation was later changed to T-33A. The original trainer version was an F-80B fuselage with a 26 inch section added forward of the wingroot. Another 12 inch section was added forward of the rear fuselage for balance and stability. Additional differences between the P-80B and the TF-80C were: smaller 85 gallon fuselage fuel tank, nylon fuel cells, two .50 caliber guns instead of six, improved air conditioning, and of course dual fight controls. Also a six gun nose could be fitted to the T-33. Early models even had 1000lb. bomb shackles on the wings. The only major change to the T-33 was the

addition of Fletcher-type wingtip tanks. Almost 6000 T-33s were built, including 649 for the Navy and 1058 for foreign air forces. Canadair built 656 MKIIIs under license and Kawasaki built 210.

Shooting Stars over KoreaOn November 8, 1950, the first jet-vs-jet aerial combat took place between a P-80 Shooting Star and aMIG-15 in the area in northwest Korea later known as "MIG Alley." Several days prior to the fateful day,MIG-15 jets had been encountered by U.S. AF F-51Ds on patrol near the Yalu River area. On the afternoon of 8 November, Lt. Russell Brown piloting his Shooting Star of the 16th Fighter Squadron, outmaneuvered two attacking MIG-15s, tacked onto the tail of one of them, and poured .50 caliber fire into him until the MIG exploded. It was the first of 827 MIGs to be shot down in Korea and the first jet-vs-jet victory ever. Units in Korea also used the TF-80C/T-33 and the RF-80. TF-80Cs and T-33s were used for photo-recon and pilot familiarization flights. PATRIOTS JET TEAM

The L-39 team flys four Boeing/Aero-Vodochody L-39C.The first of the Patriots Jet demonstration aircraft were purchased in 1999 with additional L-39 Jets purchased through 2002. The aircraft were disassembled and shipped via truck, rail and sea in a 40' container from Europe to the United States. After painstaking restoration by the Airshows America team, The Patriots L-39 jets were modified for use on the air show circuit with upgraded avionics systems for navigation and communications, removal of excess weight for better air show performance, addition of a 25 gallon smoke oil system, and removal of their previous paint scheme. First debuting in 2003 as a two-ship team, the 2004 season saw the addition of a third aircraft creating even more fun and excitement at air shows. With the success of the 2005 season, the Patriots added a forth jet for the 2006 season bringing the performance to an entirely new level. Sponsored by Fry's Electronics and Hot Line Construction, the Patriots L-39s have electrified spectators with fast paced formation flying, choreographed four-ship diamond formation aerobatic maneuvers and their signature "Tail Slide" where the aircraft actually slides backwards toward the ground, something not performed by any other jet demonstration team. Performances highlighted by computerized red, white and blue smoke system are flown by lead pilot Dean "Wilbur" Wright, right wingman Vlady "Mig" Chetverous, left wingman John "Boards" Posson andslot pilot Paul “Sticky” Strickland. UNITED AIRLINES 747

The Boeing 747 is a wide body commercial airliner and cargo transport, often referred to by the nickname Jumbo Jet or Queen of the Skies. It is among the world's most recognizable aircraft and was the first wide body ever produced. Manufactured by Boeing's Commercial Airplane unit in the United States, the original version of the 747 was two and a half times the size of the Boeing 707 one of the common large commercial aircraft of the 1960s. First flown commercially in 1970, the 747 held the passenger capacity record for 37 years. The four-engine 747 uses a double deck configuration for part of its length. It is available in passenger, freighter and otherversions. Boeing designed the 747's hump-like upper deck to serve as a first class lounge or (as is the general rule today) extra seating, and to allow the aircraft to be easily converted to a cargo carrier by removing seats and installing a front cargo door. Boeing did so because the company expected supersonic airliners (whose development was announced in the early 1960s) to render the 747 and other subsonic airliners obsolete; while believing that the demand for subsonic cargo aircraft would be robust into the future. The 747 in particular was expected to become obsolete after 400 were sold but it exceeded its critics' expectations with production passing the 1,000 mark in 1993. As of June 2010, 1,418 aircraft havebeen built, with 109 more in various configurations remaining on order.

The 747-400, the latest version in service, is among the fastest airliners in service with a high-subsonic cruise speed of Mach 0.85 (567 mph or 913 km/h). It has an intercontinental range of 7,260 nautical miles (8,350 mi or13,450 km).[13] The 747-400 passenger version can accommodate 416 passengers in a typical three-class layout or 524 passengers in a typical two-class layout. The next version of the aircraft, the 747-8, is in production and the freighter version (747-8F) is scheduled to enter service at the end of 2010 followed by the passenger version (747-8I) in 2011. The 747 is to be replaced by the Boeing Y3 (part of the Boeing Yellowstone Project) in the future.

TEAM ORACLE

Since beginning his air show career in the mid-70s, Sean Tuckerhas flown more than 700 performances at more than 300 air shows, in front of more than 60 million fans. In the upcoming season alone, Tucker and Team Oracle will entertain nearly 10 million fans at 25 shows throughout North America. "I like to thinkthat I bring the fans' dreams of flying into the plane with me; and there's nowhere I'd rather be than in the cockpit. That's why I train so hard to keep the edge!"

Sean has logged over 20,000 hours flying, which if done all at once, would take over two years, 24 hours a day.

During media photo flights, Sean will fly upright and invertedwithin 5 feet of the support plane carrying photographers.

Twice during the performance, Sean will fly the aircraft backwards, straight-down, tail-first at more than 100 mph.

Over half of Sean's maneuvers are original and have never been duplicated by another aerobatic pilot.

Sean is the world's only pilot to perform a triple ribbon cut. He flies through the ribbons at 220 mph in right knife-edge for the first ribbon, then left knife-edge and finally inverted. The ribbons are only 25 feet off of the ground and 750 feet between each set.

Sean has a revolutionary set of wings that use 8 ailerons instead of 4.

The tail on Sean's airplane is modeled after the tail used on high-performance remote control airplanes. Sean D. Tucker is the only civilian performer ever to be allowed to fly close formation with the Blue Angels

and the Thunderbirds.

BLUE ANGELS, UNITED STATES NAVAL FLIGHT DEMONSTRATION TEAM

Since 1946, U.S. Navy and Marine corps flight team has taken performance flying to new levels. Rolling, diving and spinning upside down. Blue Angels pilots continue to dazzle andinspire millions across the globe.

Seamlessly, they transition between maneuvers, methodically flying at hundreds of miles per hour. Their aircraft appear to be moving as one unit, sometimes so low to the ground you feel as if you need to duck your head as they pass. Once you've seen the Blue Angels, you've seen the epitome of teamwork, dedication and commitment to excellence.

The mission of the Blue Angels is to enhance Navy recruiting, and credibly represent Navy

and Marine Corps aviation to the United States and other countries as international ambassadors of goodwill. The Blue Angels are a mix of formation flying and solo routines using the F/A 18 Hornet. The pilots perform approximately 30 maneuvers during the aerial demonstration, which runs approximately an hour and 15 minutes.

The F/A 18 Hornet, an all-weather aircraft, is used as an attack aircraft as well as a fighter. In its fighter mode, the F/A-18 is used primarily as a fighter escort and for fleet air defense; in its attack mode, it is used for force projection, interdiction and close and deep air support. F/A-18 Hornets are currently operating in 37 tactical squadrons from air stations world-wide, and from 10 aircraft carriers.

BLUE ANGEL FAQ’SWhat are the basic requirements for becoming a Blue Angel demonstration pilot? Each applicant must be career-oriented, carrier-qualified, active-duty Navy or Marine Corps tactical jet pilot with a minimum of 1,250 flight hours. How many Blue Angels demonstration pilots have there been?Including the 2007 season, the Blue Angels have had 232 demonstration pilots, and 32 Flight Leaders/Commanding Officers.Do the Blue Angels pilots go through Strike Fighter Wing Pacific’s TOPGUN?Some current and former Blue Angels pilots have gone through TOPGUN, however it is not a prerequisite. How does someone become a Blue Angel demonstration pilot?Navy and Marine Corps pilots meeting the basic requirements submit an application directly to the team via the Applications Officer. Applicants visit the squadron at scheduled show sites early in the show season to observe the team firsthand. Finalists are selected mid-season and interviewed at the Blue Angels squadron in Pensacola, Florida. The new demonstration pilots and support officers are selected by unanimous vote. The Chief of Naval Air Training selects the Flight Leader/Commanding Officer. What happens if a Blue Angel demonstration pilot is ill or hurt?

2015 FLEET WEEK AIR SHOW

Page 15: Fleet Week Air Show Performers - boats.network fileCOAST GUARD HH 65 RESCUE DEMONSTRATION The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a military branch of the United States involved in

Safety is paramount for every demonstration. Each pilot is responsible for good health and safety; however, the Blue Angels Flight Surgeon will medically disqualify a pilot if one should become ill or injured. Should the Flight Leader/Commanding Officer be grounded for medical purposes, the demonstration will be canceled. Why don’t the Blue Angels maintain a spare pilot? With the number of practice hours required to safely fly a demonstration a spare pilot could not be utilized effectively. Each pilot must complete 120 training flights during winter training in order to perform a public demonstration safely. The teamwork required for the high speed, low-altitude flying in the tight Blue Angel formation takes hundreds of hours to develop. A substitute pilot would not have enough time in the formation to do this safely. Why don’t the pilots wear G-suits?G-suits are designed with air bladders (pockets) that inflate and deflate to keep a pilot’s blood from pooling in the pilots’ legs while executing sharp, unpredicted combat maneuvers. Unlike combat flying, the Blue Angels demonstration pilots know the maneuvers they will fly prior to execution, so each pilot knows when one will be pulling heavy gravitational forces. Anticipating the changes in gravitational forces allows the Blue Angels demonstration pilots to combat the G-forces with muscle contractions. In addition, the Boeing F/A-18’s control stick is mounted between the pilot’s legs. The Blue Angels have a spring tensioned with 35 pounds of pressure installed on the control stick that gives the pilot a “false feel.” This allows the pilot minimal room for uncommanded movement. The pilots rest their right arms on their thighs for support and stability while flying. Therefore, inflating and deflating air bladders in a G-suit would interrupt this support and stability, causing uncommanded aircraft movement. In this case, G-suits would detrimentally impact flight safety. What is the average age of a Blue Angels pilot? The pilots’ average age is 33 years old.How long is a Blue Angel tour of duty? The demonstration pilots, Maintenance Officer, Events Coordinator, and Flight Surgeon each serve a two-year tour. All other members, including the Narrator, serve a three-year tour. Each member returns to the fleet after completing a tour with the Blue Angels. What is the lowest and highest maneuver heights performed during an air show? This varies due to weather conditions. The highest is the vertical rolls performed by the Opposing Solo (up to 15,000 feet) and the lowest is the Sneak Pass (50 feet) performed by the Lead Solo. What is the most demanding maneuver performed? All maneuvers are demanding, both mentally and physically, and reflect the challenges met daily by fleet Navy and Marine Corps aviators. What are the fastest and slowest speeds flown during an air show? The fastest speed is about 700 mph (just under Mach 1; Sneak Pass) and the slowest speed is about 120 mph (indicated speed; Section High Alpha), both flown by the solo pilots during the show. What are the major differences between the fleet model and the Blue Angel F/A-18?The Blue Angel F/A-18s have the nose cannon removed, a smoke-oil tank installed and a spring installed on thestick which applies pressure for better formation and inverted flying. Otherwise, the aircraft that the squadron flies are the same as those in the fleet. Each Blue Angel aircraft is fleet capable of being returned to combat duty aboard an aircraft carrier within 72 hours. Are Blue Angels’ aircraft carrier capable? All of the Blue Angels’ jets are carrier-capable and can be made combat ready in about 72 hours. The squadron’s C-130 (“Fat Albert”) is a Marine Corps fleet aircraft manned by an all-Marine Corps crew and was not designed for carrier operations. How do the jets get to each show site? The demonstration pilots fly the jets to each show site. How much does an F/A-18 cost? The basic acquisition price of a single F/A-18 A Hornet is approximately $21 million. The cost of additional weapons-related equipment varies according to the configuration and use of each aircraft can significantly increase the total price.

2015 FLEET WEEK AIR SHOW

Page 16: Fleet Week Air Show Performers - boats.network fileCOAST GUARD HH 65 RESCUE DEMONSTRATION The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a military branch of the United States involved in

What is the top speed and rate of climb of an F/A-18?The F/A-18 can reach speeds just under Mach 2, almost twice the speed of sound or about 1,400 mph. The maximum rate of climb of the F/A-18 is 30,000 feet per minute. How far can the F/A-18 fly on a full load of fuel or with external fuel tanks? The F/A-18 can travel approximately 1,000 miles on a full load of fuel without external tanks. Adding the external tanks extends the range to approximately 1,200 miles. How do you produce the smoke, and why do you use it?The smoke is produced by pumping biodegradable, paraffin-based oil directly into the exhaust nozzles of the aircraft where the oil is instantly vaporized into smoke. The smoke provides a traceable path for spectators to follow, so they can see the flight profile that has been flown. It also enhances safety of flight by providing a valuable means by which the solo pilots can see each other during opposing maneuvers and conditions of lowered visibility or haze. The smoke poses no hazard to the environment. Why can’t the public listen to the Pilots’ conversation during the show?Since all maneuvers are preceded by radio communication broadcasting these radio calls or making the frequencies of their radios publicly available could interfere with pilot communication, thereby jeopardizing safety of flight. Why is the C-130 called “Fat Albert?”“Fat Albert” is a nickname given to the plane by Marine Corps Blue Angel pilots in the 1970s because of its size and shape and is a reference to the popular children’s cartoon of the same era. What does “JATO” stand for?“JATO” means Jet Assisted Take Off and is used by the Lockheed-Martin C-130 to clear short runways and gainhigh altitude in a short period of time such as might be necessary in combat situations. How much fuel does Fat Albert hold?Fat Albert holds 46,000 pounds of fuel. What is the normal cruising speed and shaft horsepower per motor of Fat Albert?Fat Albert’s cruising speed is 360 mph and shaft horsepower is about 4,500 per engine. What is the maximum takeoff weight of Fat Albert? The maximum takeoff weight of Fat Albert is 155,000 pounds. What is the distance under Fat Albert’s propellers to the ground? The distance under Fat Albert’s propellers to the ground is approximately six feet. How many crewmembers are assigned to fly Fat Albert, and what are their positions?Eight Marines are assigned to operate Fat Albert Airlines: three pilots, two flight engineers, a navigator, a flight mechanic and a loadmaster. How long has the team had the C-130?The team has been flying the C-130 since 1970.Have the Blue Angels ever performed overseas?Yes. Throughout the years, the Blue Angels have had a limited opportunity to perform overseas. Prior to the 2006 trip to the Netherlands, was in 1992 when the team completed a European tour performing in Sweden, Finland, Russia, Bulgaria, Italy, the United Kingdom, Romania, Spain and Germany. Is it possible to schedule a tour of the Blues home base?Unfortunately no.
